THEN PLEASE
THIS IS NOT A MONEY MAKING EXERCISE
IT HAS BEEN DONE PURELY FOR
THE LOVE OF MUSIC
AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST
BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS
NOWHERE TO HIDE - FOREIGN LEGION
These first couple of tracks are the perfect example of the kind of music that I was hunting for in the record stores of Soho at the crossover of the 21st century.
石 英明 (Ishi Hideaki), would prove to be a very favourable addition to my expanding record collection, when I'd exhausted all of the available Major Force material. The DJ Krush releases where on Mo'Wax, the unofficial Sister label of sorts, so you could say the two are virtually related.
This was identified for inclusion on an earlier project, MEECH'S DC RECORDINGS 4, but realised fairly quickly that it belongs here.
PHOTO SHOP - TOMC3 (FEAT KOOL KEITH)
I'm not sure Mr. Thornton had that much of a role on this track?
As soon as I heard this track I knew that it was essential to include it, and add reference to the HEAVY PC show,
MOONS, RUNES, AND RACOONS A_SCI-FI_ODYSSEY. Needless to say, that it still comes across as a bit freaky, even in this guise.
SUBTERRANEAN MEDITATION - APATHY
You may notice that I've chopped the last bit of this, and moved it to the end of the mix. I'm not exactly sure how this happened, but I'm quite happy with the result.
DOWN & TO THE LEFT - AMON TOBIN
This layers quite favourably with the spoken wind-down section of the track before.
This and the previous track were also earmarked for MEECH'S NINJA CUTS 4, but were singled out for both having more of a Downtempo feel.
I picked this record up during my prolonged appreciation of the DC Recordings label, but have overlooked it until now for some reason? I'll be making up for the lost years by giving it a special airing at the end of each month........FOR EVER!
I think I can hear Japanese Monster samples used, so leading into the next track rather well...
I think I can hear the sound of little people being sampled, so this also runs into the following track...
INUTILE ET INDISPENSABLE - LITTLE PEOPLE
I think this may be the first instance anything on here is 'officially' labelled as Downtempo, as opposed to the broader Electronic or Hip Hop terms.
Sampling early development devices, and tying in quite well with the themes touched upon throughout (Toys, Little People, Dolls).
More Ninja Tune, this time from The Herbaliser.
Managing to evoke thoughts of a lounge somewhere in France, at the same time SIGNIFY-ing the year that French multiple world champion Alain Prost returned to Formula 1 in the all conquering Williams FW15.
*Whenever I see a specific year mentioned from that decade, I instantly relate it to a Formula 1 season.
I'd identified several other tracks for use here from Instrumental counterpart albums, I think this stands apart from the rest, and is perfect for closing out the 45 mark.
My first run through featured two separate tracks by Prefuse 73, now we are left with just the intro & outro of this track.
SUPERNATURAL JAZZ - MAD DOCTOR X
Get ready for more Mad Doctor X on MEECH'S MARBLE BAR 4....
Which I've only recently thought about working on, despite featuring many records on my very early mixes. Quite baffling how it remained in my blind spot for so long???
I don't usually like to include two different tracks by the same artist, but it is quite hot at the moment, and I'm on a tight schedule.
Probably my favourite album of that year (2000) V...For Vengeance! Listening to it now as I write these notes and I must say that I'm very pleased to be including here.
THE 11TH HOUR CONCEPT - CHOCOLATE WEASAL
Chocolate Weasal are Marc Royal and Chris Stevens, I remember buying my bathroom from Chris Stevens on Holloway Road! That alone, is enough of a reason for including it, but I'm also extremely happy with the mix-out from the track before.
I have a vision in my head of Sixtoo and RJD2 walking together across a desert wasteland.
(above)
VETERAN'S LEG - DYNAMIC SYNCOPATION
One more Ninja Tune release, and this is from an album that I place very highly amongst my collection of 'Go To' records.
This was included in my initial playlist for 東京通話 planetmeech, which I don't need to elaborate on the content of...
MORE BLUE FUNK - THE FUNK LEAGUE
I suspect that DJ Suspect of The /Funk League is French.
Although, sounding French, I know that L'Orange is in fact North American, and has worked extensively with Kool Keith, so highly credible in my book.
(SUB. MEDITATION) REAL COOL - APATHY
I used the popular song identifier App for my very first digital mix NO LEGS 90, to include the most amazing Soul belter you will ever hear, but for whatever reason this track would keep coming up. There are no obvious crossovers or samples used on either song, so assume the App was having a bad day. End result...........two amazing close out tracks.
