NOTE THIS IS NOT A MONEY MAKING EXERCISE
IT HAS BEEN DONE PURELY FOR
THE LOVE OF MUSIC
AND I'VE HAD AN ABSOLUTE BLAST
BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS
FREDDIE FREELOADER STUDIO SEQUENCE 1 - MILES DAVIS
Included because I needed a spoken intro that could be used in the Apple Music library, and thought that the candid nature along with the topic worked really well with this project.
This was the standout track in a Slam Radio show that I immediately identified and added to my library.
After several aborted attempts to kickstart the compilation, I ended up plucking this from another future project.
WE TOOK VEGAS - DEADLY AVENGER
Although I really like We Took Pelham, it is just far too well known to be used in a current mix, plus it's the walk out music for Sheffield Utd - so a definite no! This track was the perfect replacement.
BURN THIS DISCO OUT - MICHAEL JACKSON
At the very early stage of the project, I had this strange idea to use a couple of different tracks with the same title - (Burn The Witch), and this seemed like a good track to use as a transition between rock based songs about sacrifice and funk based songs about movement.
A NIGHT AND A DAY - PEPE DELUXÉ
I’m always consciously trying to include tracks of this nature to add a bit of energy and to tick the box that I’m not neglecting music with guitars, although this is not a traditional guitar based track. Do samples count?
CHEAP TALK - DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979
I’m always consciously trying to include tracks of this nature to add a bit of energy, and to tick the
box that I’m not neglecting music with guitars, plus the two tracks fit together really well.
This track evokes the spirit of travel and reflects my love of funk from around the globe.
This track also evokes the spirit of travel, and is featured here as a sly nod to our old friend that works with gas.
During the very early stages of this project when adding possible tracks to a future ‘playlist’, I was forwarded a recommendation to listen to a Bonnacons Of Doom track. The track was great, however, I was horrified when I saw that it was from 2018! I’m well aware that nearly all of my musical tastes are either electronic or from days gone by,
so purposefully looked for something that was released this year (2018) that could be used on this project.
The track itself does sound very similar to Depeche Mode, so is not out of place when looking at my compilations from the very beginning (Before Computing). The 80’s feel also transitions well with the nostalgic disco of the next track.
I’ve just checked the play count and its getting close to three figures - so will be pleased to lay this one to rest.
RIGHT ON FOR THA DARKNESS - SILICONE SOUL
This had been a highlight from my days commuting to Milton Keynes so was an early addition to the project.
As well as linking with the last track, it also makes me think of a slightly darker approach to dance music,
and would have fitted well with the earlier satanic feel as mentioned above. But the placing along with the Woodsman sample work really well.
RITUALS - ARCHIE BRONSON OUTFIT
Again, used mainly because of the track title and the link to other musical themes.
BURN THE WITCH - QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE
As covered above.
As covered above and, I also really needed to use a track by Lamb Of God - simply because I could!
MAIN TITLE (PAT GARRATT & BILLY THE KID) - BOB DYLAN
This was originally planned as the opening track to the whole project. The idea for No Legs came to me while out running, I saw a billboard advertising Kris Kristofferson at Kenwood House and foolishly thought it would be a good idea to maybe get tickets. Fortunately, I later remembered that I detest Country & Western music. However, I still wanted to do something to tie up the music from Pat Garratt & Billy The Kid with the track from Dirty Beatniks.
KRIS KRISTOFFERSON - DIRTY BEATNIKS
As mentioned above
IN-A-GADDA-DA-VIDA - IRON BUTTERFLY
I’ve always wanted to use this track on compilations from years before but never had the opportunity, when I saw Manhunter again fairly recently I knew that I could now fulfil my life dream because now we have access to virtually anything that has ever been recorded.
This is used as a result of my fondness for a particular record label - Tummy Touch.
LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION - MR. CHEEKS
Another track that was identified many years before on my commute and something
that has stuck in my head for many months but had been unable to recall the name until now.
This is also used as a result of my fondness for particular record labels - Tummy Touch.
It also acts as the kickstart to a change in gear leading up to the finale.
IN PARTICULAR - BLONDE REDHEAD
As soon as I heard the interesting use of guitar here I knew I had to use it plus it ties in really well with the track before.
SLOW AND QUIET - PROMISE AND THE MONSTER
Also ties in really well with the last track and acts as a good build up to the track that I’ve been working towards all project…….
An outstanding track in my opinion and I've based most of this mix with the intention
of making it sound even more special.
I’ve even snuck this on to other playlists......for an Indian restaurant and my charity summer party!
SEE AND DON'T SEE - MARIE QUEENIE LYONS
I think I remember something similar being used at the very end of a club night I used to go to when I first moved to London. I loved the way that after all the craziness of the past few hours had ceased a kind of encore crept out that was completely at odds to what had gone before.
wHAT kINDA fUCK eNDING wAS tHAT? - PRINCE
Used at the very end of the world’s most famous bootleg and a literal question to his untimely death.
