IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE MADE AWARE WHEN FUTURE PROJECTS BECOME AVAILABLE,
THEN PLEASE
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS
NOT A MONEY MAKING EXERCISE
IT HAS BEEN DONE PURELY FOR
THE LOVE OF MUSIC
AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST
BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS
Perfect for opening this project.
Relatively recent compared to the majority of music featured here. I remember nearly all of these tunes from my early driving experiences in and around London during the late 90's. Bringing everything together here is a real trip down memory lane.
Ninja Tune was without doubt in my top five, whenever I would shop by labels.
As a statement, it should really go at the beginning.
I noticed on Twitter fairly recently that Coldcut (Jonathon More and Matt Black), the creators of Ninja Tune, met each other at Reckless Records on Berwick Street.
*I picked up most of these records from that very store.
For some unfathomable reason, I never really invested in any product by Blockhead. The sleeves very much appeal to me and would have undoubtedly sparked my interest being in the Ninja Tune section.
NON LATERAL HYPOTHESIS - DJ VADIM
The first of two entries by Mr. Vadim. No shortage of available material for me to use here, I've needed to cull a fair bit from this show already.
The very opening to this album has Mary Ann Hobbs introducing us all to Mr. Scruff.
I think I can still remember listening to that very show in my car, but that could be a false memory - who knows? Not me for sure??
Mr. Scruff was a fairly big hit with me at the time, and listening to Fish being used in the Safety Video for Virgin Atlantic, always puts a smile on my face whenever I'm about to buckle up and be transported over the Atlantic.
THE BIONIC HOOKERS FROM MARS - LONDON FUNK ALLSTARS
From the album of the same name. I'm glad that I stumbled across this in the Music Exchange, and didn't have to ask for it in the Virgin Megastore.
For some strange reason, I always overlooked Master View whenever flicking through the Ninja Tune section. I'm not sure whether that's a good thing or not....
Bad, that I missed out all those years ago.
But good, because I now have a completely new (to me) album that I can listen to after I've finished writing these notes.
THEME FROM CONQUEST OF THE IRRATIONAL - DJ VADIM
I really need to consider a dedicated project for this Russian purveyor of Hip Hop.
CHANNEL 1 SUITE (FOUR TET REMIX) - THE CINEMATIC ORCHESTRA
Tying in extremely well to the previous track.
Considered for the dedicated show, but discarded in favour of slightly more urgent entries. However, works here to mark the crossover point.
Get ready......
That's all I'm saying!
COMPARED TO WHAT (CHASE MIX) - UP, BUSTLE AND OUT
I'm still not finished with the different versions of this song.
I promise that this is the penultimate time that it will ever appear.
Unless I unearth a previously unheard version by Prince, or.......(Slam?)
THE REAL KILLER - THE HERBALISER
Quality!
COFFEE AT SENOR ROODY'S - UP, BUSTLE AND OUT
I vaguely remember being passed an Up, Bustle And Out mixtape by one of my housemates when I rented in Tooting.
EINE KLEINE HEDMUSIK - COLDCUT
This was on the first release by Ninja Tune that I would buy.
THE WORM TURNS - ILLUMINATI OF HEDFUK
Also on the same release, and listened to frequently in the car.
DEEP SHIT - KRUDER & DORFMEISTER
Depending on how familiar you are with this,
you may notice that I've chopped off the second part for the benefit of the mix.
Featured fairly recently on a very similar show that also focused on Breaks & Beats,
NO RAP HIP HOP. I'm including the link in the hope that it may get a few extra listens.
SOMETHING WICKED - THE HERBALISER
A creepy little entry from The Herbaliser slotting in before the end.
IT'S A LONG ROAD - FUNKI PORCINI
From the very first release of the Ninja Tunes label, and I'm almost certain that I remember it from a Richard Sen mixtape that received special attention in my car. Funki Porcini is James Braddell who is one half of the incredible..............
9 Lazy 9, that I've already dedicated a complete show to, MEECH'S 9 LAZY 90.
Expect a similarly themed project for Funki Porcini sometime next year...
Sheet!!!!
I've just realised that there is nothing on here, by DJ Food or Dynamic Syncopation?
Thankfully, I've already included a couple of tracks on my BEATS/BREAKSDOWN shows, along with other entries by The Herbaliser.
It's also clear now just how much space is taken up by Ninja Tune in my record collection.
Not wholly unforeseeable that I could have more of this up my sleeve in the future...
