rHIGH EX (WRECKAGE INC MIX) - PETROL 3
Very reminiscent of the type of knock off Portishead that was cropping up all over the place during the second half of the 90's. Perfect for using to open a mix or very early on a club night. Wreckage Inc were part of the Wall Of Sound label as well, so managed to hit the right notes with me.
FIRE UP THE SHOESAW - LIONROCK
Lionrock was the Big Beat incarnation of Justin Robertson, a particularly popular DJ/Remixer that was remixing and DJ'ing in particularly popular places, possibly even Turnmills?
No doubt, the John Barry/Bond samples would have hooked me right in.
A Wall Of Sound release that I didn't manage to fit into WALL OF MEECH FOUR.
GET UP! GO INSANE! - STRETCH & VERN
The Stretch half of this duo also has a Wall Of Sound connection, and this typifies the kind of high energy beat driven Instrumental Hip Hop that was ever present at The Heavenly Social/Jukebox.
WHAT'S GOING ON? - MEKON & ROXANNE SHANTÉ
This one is an actual Wall Of Sound Release, but I may have mixed my dates up slightly, by the time this came out, my clubbing days at Turnmills were sadly in the past.
I can't quite remember how this came to my attention, it may have been on a specific label beginning with a W?
At this point, my record buying and social activity were crucially aligned.
More Hip Hop inspired Beats for the young people to get down to at the weekend.
My dates are most definitely not out with this, despite the album coming out this side of the millennium event. I still remember hearing this getting played once or twice well ahead of me buying the actual 12", and long before the Space Raiders LP.
This could quite easily have featured on my forthcoming MEECH'S SKINT 4, but thankfully, I have another track that holds equal significance.
DEVIL IN SPORTS CASUAL - MIDFIELD GENERAL
Almost a case of listening to this in the club on a Saturday, then buying the 12" on a Monday. The time scale used is only an example, who knows, this could have been the case? It may have been spread out over a month, or even a few years. In my mind, it happened over the course of a weekend, but that sounds strangely convenient, especially as I had to work most Mondays?
Damian Harris/Midfield General is the label boss of Skint,
and one of the main architects of the scene which catered for fans of this new high energy brand of Trip Hop.
This particular track presented me with the very real problem of deciding whether it should have been included on my dedicated Skint mix, or my future 6+6+6 project. It has to be included here though as I firmly identify it with hearing it at several Heavenly nights at Turnmills.
Ha - I first heard this on the John Peel show, I know this because I still have the tape! I'm pretty sure that it was used during a set by someone at Turnmills, but obviously cannot confirm, and can only go on my suspect memory storage.
This Ninja Tune single, by the label creators, also helps break up the run of five consecutive Skint releases.
Needless to say, that this was seriously considered for MEECH'S NINJA CUTS 4, but sits far better with this club heavy tribute to Turnmills.
Known for his cutting edge Techno, as championed by John Peel, and featuring heavily on multiple expeditions in the car.
This could be categorized as a crossover track that would not be out of place with everything else, especially as it appears on the Skint record label.
Following on exceptionally well from the previous track.
MANY TENTACLES PIMPING ON THE KEYS - LO FIDELITY ALLSTARS
I was introduced to these by listening to the Mary Anne Hobbs show that specialized in the Big Beat formula.
This triggered my curiosity so much that I took the future Mrs. ΜΞΞCΗ to see them perform at the Astoria, along with various other Skint artists.
I also saw these on another occasion at the same venue.....happy days!
I'm not sure that I ever saw this act, but you get the idea. Another track that I thought would be better suited to this mix, rather than my dedicated Skint project.
A RACETRACK IN FRANCE - GIL SCOTT-HERON AND BRIAN JACKSON
I'm now using a little bit of creative license with this entry....
Originally identified for use on one of my future MEECHSPLOITATION projects, but incorporated on this show as an example of the 'anything goes' attitude of the club.
Although recorded in the 70's, it sounds remarkably modern, so perfect for rounding things off... just about.
This was used as the final track on at least one night!
