MAD BUZZ - DIRTY BEATNIKS

'Step round this wall of sound',

I'm sure that the sample at the very beginning was the main reason I used this B side to open the mix.

Many years previously, I used to purchase records in a fairly carefree manner, and would tend to buy from specific labels. Wall Of Sound was one of a handful of labels that catered for my tastes around that time, I think I was first drawn to these releases by The Wiseguys.

The uniform typeface and graphic design of the sleeves also led me to pick up quite a few releases by many other artists.

My exposure to Wall Of Sound had a knock on effect with several equivalent labels.

Get ready for similarly named projects that focus on Pussyfoot, Ninja Tune, Mo' Wax etc. to join MEECH'S MAJOR FORCE 4.

CAIPIRINHA - CEASFIRE VS DEADLY AVENGER

The AA side to Evel Knievel that featured on 90 MINUTE BREAKsDOWN, this was probably the first release I bought that didn't share the recognised graphic identity with everything else. Fortunately, I was no longer a casual buyer, and took my procurement of these things very seriously. If you listen carefully, you'll recognise segments taken from Dance Across The Floor by Jimmy Bo Horne that featured on MEECH'S DISCO MAGIC 4.

RADIO ATHLETICO - THE BLOODSUCKAS

Not released by Wall Of Sound, or any of their imprints. I'm really not sure why I included this. It may have sneaked into the wrong slot at the music exchange? It does fit with everything else though if you didn't know that it wasn't a Wall Of Sound release. The only connection I can come up with is Derek Dahlarge, who shared a bill on The Essential Mix with Touche of The Wiseguys, both of which featured prominently in my social engagements at the time.

DEEPASS - DIRTY BEATNIKS

Another entry from Dirty Beatniks, and one more example of me not being too bothered about the standard compilation structure that seems to define my current projects. This is from the Latinhead/Deepass double A side, so also ended up in the mix due to it being outside of the album format.

LET ME HIT 'EM - MEKON & EVIL B

Joining the dots between Big Beat and Hip Hop.

COME ON BABY - PSYCHO COWBOYS

A one off release that I'm unable to unearth any info on the artists at all.

DISCO DANCING MACHINES - DIRTY BEATNIKS

From the Feedback album which was a departure from their familiar sound, and featured Mau from Earthling that appeared on my fellow compiler's THE AVON & SOMESRET REMIX PROJECTZ.

THE REAL VIBES - THE WISEGUYS

My earliest release by The Wiseguys wasn't even through Wall Of Sound, but it did also feature on a Give 'Em Enough Dope compilation by the label. This mix is titled Wall Of Meech anyway, so I could technically include Depeche Mode if I really wanted to????

GO FASTER - PROPELLERHEADS

More non album material.

I'm sure I would have been compelled to at the time, but I'm surprised that I didn't opt for Take California? Thankfully, that does make an appearance on Moist Sounds, a travel cassette put together for a trip to L.A. by Mrs planetmeech that I plan to convert at some stage.

TRICKSHOT - CEASEFIRE

I've just rediscovered that Ceasefire was  Derek Dahlarge, so I have my connection (above), I suspect that I already knew this all those years ago, but who really knows?

MR. SOPHISTICATION - MEKON

The original tape included three and a half different entries by Mekon, chopping it down to just two has proved both a little tricky and quite traumatic.

CHASE - WRECKAGE INC.

No such problems with this inclusion, lending itself very well to the mix.

FUNK IT UP - THE WISEGUYS

As well as picking up virtually anything I could find on this label, I had started to explore the delights of Pussyfoot as well. These two labels would often share the same slot or right next to each other in the second hand record stores.

WAAHAAA.. Imagine how happy I was when I happened upon a double LP compilation called Wall Of Pussy, a collaboration between the two, which this is from. This and The Real Vibes from earlier where both highlights in my record playing sessions, and included here for not being part of any regular album release.

DAMAGED PEOPLE - LES RYTHMES DIGITALES

My plans have been slightly affected here, I'd intended to work on a future French based project that would feature this act, Daft Punk, Motorbass, Etien Den Crecy etc. I'm certain that I didn't already know this, but I've just been told that I did...

Jacques Lu Cont is in fact Stuart Price from North Yorkshire ðŸ¤¯

UP AGAINST THE WALL - PRESSURE DROP

I never associated this act as being part of the traditional Wall Of Sound stable of recording artists. But this track did appear on the Give 'Em enough Dope compilation which was firmly part of the labels output at the time, and this bookends rather well with the samples used in the opening track about 86 minutes earlier.

You may have noticed that this label had a heavy influence on my choice of using the Bauhaus typeface on my own formatting throughout the website.
