THIS IS NOT A MONEY MAKING EXERCISE

IT HAS BEEN DONE PURELY FOR

THE LOVE OF MUSIC

AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST

BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS

FIRST DOWN -  FATBOY SLIM

I'd been collecting the odd Skint 12" a while before this album was passed to me by my good friend, fellow student and former band-mate Paul Skinner, who is sadly no longer with us. Can't believe that I've just written that!

We both found it very strange that this very fresh sounding brand of music was from one of the Housemartins.

While listening to my regular dose of African music, I instantly recognised where these samples were taken from.

Get ready for Fela Kuti, who will definitely be appearing on PLANETMEECH 90 now!

ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET WHISTLE - BENTLEY RHYTHM ACE

The madcap Brummie sound of BRA, not sounding particularly madcap at all.

POST PUNK PROGRESSION - CUT LA ROC

This, on the other hand, fits the Skint template perfectly.

PUNK TO FUNK - FATBOY SLIM

I still remember hearing this at Turnmills quite a few times, and I think it may have been well received by the record buying kids of the day.

I'm pretty sure that Norman Cook went on to have quite a lucrative career behind the decks, but I neglected to keep up with any of his recorded output after his next album for some reason.

ANAFEY - HIP OPTIMIST

Catalogue ref. SKINT 3 on the now extensive roster of releases.

This record belonged to one of my house-mates in Tooting, but very rarely left my room! It also found it's way onto a tape of late 90's Skint releases for the car.

(I NEED THE) DISKO DOKTOR - SPACE RAIDERS

I also remember Space Raiders from Turnmills, which encouraged me to pick up the 12" releases ahead of the full album. For further Space Raiders enjoyment, please follow the link to THE TURNMILLS TIME MACHINE.

EELS - MINT GUN CLUB

As we're ticking off various sub genres, may as well include a token offering of Drum & Bass.

VISION INCISION - LO FIDELITY ALLSTARS

These are also included on THE TURNMILLS TIME MACHINE, I think I was quite into them in the very late 90's as well, and would hear regular music on the Mary Anne Hobbs show. I'm pretty sure that I attended a Skint specific live event at the Astoria, but can only positively remember the Lo-Fi Allstars and Bentley Rhythm Ace. I can't be bothered to trawl through my ticket stubs to confirm this, so I'll have to trust my astonishingly poor memory.

DOUBLE JEDI AND COKE - INDIAN ROPEMAN

I don't know an awful lot about Indian Ropeman, other than simply adding it to my basket in the Music Exchange because of the familiar Skint label. Thinking about it now, I'm not too sure if the second-hand stores even had baskets, it's been such a long time since I stepped foot in a record store.

FIRE LIKE DIS - HARDKNOX

I don't think this music would have had quite the same impact had the outfit been named Soft Gentle Pillowcase Full Of Candy-floss, I suppose we'll never know for sure.

LAUGH AT MY TOMORROWS - SPARKY LIGHTBOURNE

Not managing to evoke quite the same levels of relaxation as alluded to above, but attempting to level things out after the abrasiveness of the previous track.

GO OFF - MIDFIELD GENERAL

Midfield General is Damian Harris, the Brighton based creator of Skint, and probably responsible for kick-starting the whole Big Beat sound.

WHY IS A FROG TOO - BENTLEY RHYTHM ACE

If the previous offering by BRA delivered the unexpected, then this is a return to their bonkers best.

AMPED - FREQ NASTY

Template Skint!

INDIAN ROPEMAN - INDIAN ROPEMAN

Still none the wiser.

*I think that is the first time I've ever used that expression.
