 THE WOODWORM - 9 LAZY 9

Don't be surprised if this crops up on MEECH'S NINJA CUTS 4, or even a dedicated 9 Lazy 9 project.

I funking love this record!

John Peel tipped us all off to the delights of 9 Lazy 9 when I still lived in Eastleigh/Southampton. Thanks to this, I went on to pick up anything by Ninja Tune as soon as I moved to the Capital.

This was on a white label pre release for Paradise Blown, I really can't say too much about the rest of that album, but this track helped cement my love for the Latin rhythm.

Unlike the trademark 9 Lazy 9 sound, but very much like other records I was listening to at that time.👍

This tune was always selected at the very beginning, whenever I was in the mood to have a little play around with my records, regardless of the music I was listening to. So I'm over the moon now to be putting it to good use all these years later.

MACUMBA - CAPTAIN PLANET

I've inadvertently included two tracks by Captain Planet.

Usually, when this happens, I'm able to pull off a swift substitution.

Not this time I'm afraid! To remove this track now, or any time, would be complete lunacy! Luckily for everyone that I'm not quite at the lunatic stage yet, and we can all appreciate the brilliance of this track. I was tempted to place it at the very start, but my long-standing relationship with that first record prevented that.

CUBAFRO CON AMIGAS - THE BALLISTIC BROTHERS

I've been walking around these last few days with the 'Cubrafro Con Amigas' sample repeating in my head, even blurting it out a few times'

The London Hooligan Soul album was something I listened to an awful lot a while ago, when I found myself driving back and forth along The South Circular a couple of times each day.

Damn! I don't think I've listened to that album for well over twenty years?

I'd forgotten all about it, as though it had been completely wiped from existence!

You may, or may not know, that The Ballistic Brothers were Ashley Beadle (a pretty big deal all those years ago), and Rocky & Diesal, who were Xpress 2, (also a pretty big deal).

FOTO VIVA (NICOLA CONTE MIX) - MO' HORIZONS

This European outfit have already appeared on planetmeech Global 90. The track here featured on a World Music playlist that I put together for a local charity Summer Picnic to mark the 2012 London Olympics.

THE BRAZILIAN HIPSTER - FORT KNOX FIVE

This had been included in one of my local restaurants pretty basic World Music playlists. I'm not referring to the playlist as pretty basic because of the quality of music, but due to he fact it only contained about twenty songs.

You could guarantee that this would be playing whenever we decided to eat there.

I recognised it straight away from the very first time I heard it as being from one of my World Funk compilations.

SPEAKIN NUYORICAN - CAPTAIN PLANET

See the earlier entry by Captain Planet above, besides anyone going by the name of Captain Planet is sure to grab my attention. I was very reluctant to swap out this track, as I've really impressed myself with the mix.

GUAJIRA '78 - GREENWOOD RYTHM SECTION

The closest thing to Ray Barretto on here, I've only just realised that I've not included him here at all - what a shocker?

As is the case most weeks, when I'm finally happy with my 90, all this 'new' music suddenly presents itself. I'm currently revisiting London Hooligan Soul by The Ballistic Brothers, and I'd forgotten just how much South American party music was included.

I've just made a start on a future instalment...

planetmeech LATIN 90 II

CHICHARRON 'N' BOOGALOO - LOS CHICHARRONS

Don't be surprised if these crop up on  MEECH'S TUMMY TOUCH 4. No, fully expect to see them make an appearance! Tummy Touch were releasing just the sort of music that complemented my love for Latin/Salsa based music.

I ended up buying a fair few releases on the Tummy Touch record label, and more than a few of those by Los Chicharrons.

From an album called Conga Heaven, Bongo Hell, I fully knew what I was getting myself into.

BOSA (CANTO G BOSSA) - DONALD BYRD & FRIENDS

I've just labelled this simply as Donald Byrd & Friends to save room on the graphics above. The friends include Candido Camero, Grady Tate, Kenny Burrell, Ron Carter & Stanley Turrentine.............and Herbie Hancock!!

THE BLESSING SONG - SHIRLEY EUBANKS ENSEMBLE

I'd mistakenly earmarked this for my Afrobeat project, but listening to it here, I think I've probably got it in the right mix.

UP FROM THE SEA IT AROSE AND ATE RIO IN ONE SWIFT BITE - GEORGE DUKE

A Brazilian love affair.

BOSSA PER DUE - NICOLA CONTE

If you are going to add a sitar track, then it is guaranteed that I'll take notice.

Only natural that I'd get pushed in this direction, after his remix work above.

TOSCA - ROLF ROYCE

My music streaming service was made aware of my fascination with music from this part of the world, and rather helpfully directed me towards this.

KIND OF LATIN RHYTHM - THE JU JU ORCHESTRA

As above.

SAMBA MAGIC - BASEMENT JAXX

As touched upon above, I spent a vast amount of time driving all over South London quite a few years ago, and would listen to many Pirate radio stations in the process. Funnily enough, Basement Jaxx would always seem to be playing around their native Brixton area. Get ready for a specific track to feature on planetmeech 2000.

I don't think that track, or this tune have featured on any of their standard albums, but I picked them up on 12", and did put them to very good use at the time.

PRIMA VERA - TRUBY TRIO

These diverse Jazz/House fusionists also hail from the same country as Mo' Horizons, there must be something going on in the land of the sausage.

MEU DESTINO - THEIVERY CORPORATION

If you've heard any of my very early shows, then you will be familiar with these chaps. I've just needed to look that one up, because I couldn't quite remember which show, WHAT'S IN THE AIR FLORIDA? (I believe there may be a document on the horizon soon, I'm afraid I've not worked out how to put a search box on the website yet).

The horror! That track featured Seu Jorge, another key artist that I've overlooked on this project.
