This practically knocked me sideways when I first heard it. I decided to use it at some stage and would probably open with it as the build from nothing works at presenting something a little different.
I hear his T-shirts are pretty good as well - HA!
A fairly obscure track from one of the bands lesser known film score projects. Thankfully, I'm a Sonic Youth completest so you are treated to this wonderful piece of noise that fits together with near perfection to the first track.
I was initially attracted by the graphic design on the sleeve art and pleased to hear that the music matched to my expectations.
FOLLOWING - THE PHENOMENAL HANDCLAP BAND
I think I may have mentioned my enthusiasm for TUMMY TOUCH RECORDS more than once, this was actually on an album sampler but keeps vanishing from iTunes so the link may or may not work? Something quite different though from the initial releases on the label but does leave an impression after listening.
I absolutely love this piece and was encouraged to use it here to recall memories not of New York, but Brighton Pier of all places. It does though lead into the next track with The Big Apple firmly at the forefront of your imagination.
I was really keen to use these two tracks together at some stage and this felt like a good opportunity. Athough, I'll probably regret not saving them for a New York themed compilation, as music inspired by the city that never sleeps may be a bit hard to come by - HA!
PAPER UNDERWEAR - THE FREE ASSOCIATION
I love the style and technique of anything remotely connected to David Holmes and this works so well with helping me achieve the overall feel of the 90 minutes.
I WANNA KNOW IF IT'S GOOD TO YOU - FUNKADELIC
I love the style and technique of anything remotely connected to George Clinton etc.........
I'm thinking that this may have followed on better from The Free Association, but the match up with The Peddlers is priceless despite the huge gap in years between both being recorded.
ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER - THE PEDDLERS
This was used in an episode of Mr Robot that I saw a while back and it was bugging me where I recognised it from? After a little bit of research I did manage to identify the song but it was still nagging me that I recognised it. Then, fairly recently, the memory just washed over me in a moment of realisation - a small portion of the rhythm track was used right at the end of a Soulwax mix. I had wanted to use it right at the end of this project but thought better not because of the similarity to the mix mentioned. Luckily for me, the two tracks at the end of the first 45 minutes go together so well I could use it here. It also pays a little homage to this years official Best Actor.
THIS IS YOUR LIFE THEME - LAURIE JOHNSON ORCHESTRA
For me anyway, I think these two tracks go together so well and I've always thought that this was quite a remarkable piece of music used for an unremarkable television show.
I used to have this album on cassette after being handed it by a random colleague that I only knew for 6 weeks and have not seen since?
I was told to listen to some 'dirty music by wronged women' I'm not too sure if Hope Sandaval would like that description or not, but it certainly stuck in my memory for that reason.
More of an interlude than a song, and used here mainly as a way to bridge the two styles of music.
I heard this used in a random soul/funk mix I was listening to as background music a while back and did my research there and then and confusingly it turns out that it's known by two different names, and here we are.
I really wanted to use the next track and had been requested to include it at some stage, so needed some traditional Dub to link everything together. I'm worried though that the difference in sound quality may be a bit jarring and even worse when listening on headphones.
As mentioned above and fits well with the overall vocal heavy feel of everything else.
I always put this on repeat whilst I'm unpacking at the beginning of a hotel stay. Probably atarted as a way to annoy Mrs planetmeech but I can't stay anywhere without this ritual now. Used here because a sample at the end of The Orb track made me think of this song. It also makes me smile whenever I hear this as I'm reminded of my school days and some fool changing the lyrics to Erection Avenue.
EENA MEENA DEKA - ASHA BHOSTLE
I've always had a slight penchant towards older Indian themed music and this particular song is both Indian and quite old.
HARE KRSNA (FEAT. SEU JORGE) - THEIVERY CORPORATION
Quite an amazing track that links ideas and themes very well.
ARE YOU MY WOMAN - THE CHI-LITES
You'll probably recognise this from the sample used on the hit by the lady with the mega vocals.
BOOGIE DOWN (FEAT. CARLA VAUGHN) - ROY AYERS
I love Roy Ayers and I'm fairly sure I've heard samples of the vocal (screams) used on a Frankie Knuckles mix that always got played during 'smooth' pre club drives??
Plays over the closing titles for CITY OF GOD which left a lasting impression on me and had to be used here for that same effect.
In case you didn't get enough of this at the beginning and you need a reminder to go and get this album right now!
This also features on the Ape Sounds album so I was helped out a bit. I've always loved a reprise as well, ever since listening to Beatles records as a kid.
