BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS
IF ANYBODY GETS FUNKED UP (IT'S GONNA BE YOU) - GEORGE CLINTON
If James Brown used to get referred to as 'The Godfather Of Soul', then everybody knows who George Clinton should be known as.
Not only could you label him as 'The Godfather Of Funk', he's responsible for inspiring a lot of the decent Hip Hop from the 80's and 90's.
UP FOR THE DOWN STROKE - PARLIAMENT
The first of many 'signature' tunes used on this project, and also featured on the very first George Clinton record I would buy. The music of George Clinton/Parliament/Funkadelic, any other pseudonym/alias or off-shoot has featured very prominently throughout my life. The same album provided a track for my very first journey tape
I've had the pleasure of experiencing the live show on a number of occasions, and have also been lucky enough to shake his hand and get the above mentioned record signed (not by any stretch a 'Super Fan', but on my way).
I've included this to provide something that isn't part of all the 'popular' Best Of compilations, but keeping with Parliament/Funkadelic staple sound.
I'd hazard a guess that these two tracks were more than likely recorded in the same session, probably in the same take?
GIVE UP THE FUNK (TEAR THE ROOF OFF THE SUCKER) - PARLIAMENT
Kicking off a run of very familiar music, all of which have been sampled over the years by artists such as Snoop Dogg and Digital Underground amongst others.
Get ready for the dedicated show, THE P-FUNK OF DIGITAL UNDERGROUND, and the Funk based Hip Hop project FUNKADELIC EVOLUTION.
I remember that this gets extended out quite a bit during the live show as the Mothership descends.
Fortunately, I still have clear memories of buying this record in Greenwich market probably some time in the very late 90's, and absolutely loving the record sleeve. It looks strangely like the kind of thing I'm creating now, it probably had a subconscious influence on me all along.
The Parliament logo also lends itself very well in allowing me to create a planetmeech version.
ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE - FUNKADELIC
Not my first record, but definitely my very first introduction to the world of George Clinton. I also remember reading a Happy Mondays bio that mentioned Shaun Ryder going mad on the dance floor whenever this would be played, I also know that it's one of his favourites - so this one is for you Mañana.
(NOT JUST) KNEE DEEP - FUNKADELIC
This is close to becoming a 'Greatest Hits' show...
If you'd like to hear the full version, click the link above, I've edited this slightly to squeeze in even more favourites.
I think I've loved this probably even before I heard it for the first time, helped out considerably by Me Myself & I by De La Soul.
Linking with the last track by way of also helping to form the structure of a popular Hip Hop mega hit. However, I'm not such a fan of the work of Snoop as I am of early De La Soul.
BUTT TO BUTT RESUSCITATION - FUNKADELIC
The recorded musical output of Funkadelic is, ironically less of a Funk sound than Parliament, leaning towards more of a Funk/Rock feel.
PUMPIN' IT UP - THE P-FUNK ALLSTARS
Yes! I also remember buying this in Greenwich market, probably before I knew just exactly what The P-Funk Allstars were about - it didn't take much detective work though, so I took the plunge.
I absolutely love this, and would also like to mention The Electric Spanking Of War Babies, just because I really wanted to type the title of the album!
I never thought that I'd ever get to write that in any form or other, so I can now sign off feeling extremely satisfied...
FREAK OF THE WEEK - FUNKADELIC
Click the link above to see another iconic record sleeve, this would alternate with the autographed record at the front of the box.
Along with (Not Just) Knee Deep, you get just over twenty minutes of the purest funk at the start of any album. I've always found it difficult to identify the two tracks because of this, so I've separated and placed them in this order to jolt me into taking note.
