THEN PLEASE

THIS IS NOT A MONEY MAKING EXERCISE

IT HAS BEEN DONE PURELY FOR

THE LOVE OF MUSIC

AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST

BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS

GLASS SPIDER - DAVID BOWIE

It may seem a little overly theatrical, but the spoken intro and the build up work perfectly for the effect I was probably going for when kicking things off. David Bowie would feature heavily in my projects going forward, due to the fact his music has always been so interesting and varied. But the real reason I suspect, was that my access to varied and interesting music was quite limited at the time.

WE LOVE YOU - THE ROLLING STONES

This period of output from The Rolling Stones has always been very popular with me and I remember at that time, very little else featured in our early motoring activity.

THIS SIDE OF LOVE - TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY

I only recently heard this again for the first time in well over twenty years and was instantly struck by just how good it is. If I could, I'd be happy to use this on more than one project - watch out!!

BALANCE - WENDY & LISA

I probably used this track to show that I could add something a little unexpected and obscure. I'd hoped that not many, if any would be able to identify a bonus track by Wendy & Lisa! Although, when recreating this digitally, Mrs. planetmeech instantly recognised this as somehow connected to Prince.

PUMP UP THE VOLUME - M/A/R/R/S

A truly remarkable tune that stands the test of time, I'm pretty sure as well that it was the very first out and out dance record that I bought.

UP FROM THE SKIES - THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE

Probably the coolest song ever recorded by Jimi!

Part of Axis Bold As Love, my very first of many purchases.

FIVE TO ONE - THE DOORS

Unfortunately, due to time constraints and the desire to match the spirit and feel of the original concept, I've had to make a few alterations. This track, due to the relatively simple song structure was the easiest to tamper with. I'm sure that if The Mr. Mojo were alive today, he would summon his Native American spirit friends to come and exact revenge on me for messing with his art.

SUICIDE BLONDE - INXS

This brings back memories of the student union bar and that period, I also remember the song prompted me to start using the same tag for a certain long haired guitarist from Southampton.

LOSING MY RELIGION - R.E.M.

This also reminds me of the above and I still have vivid memories of watching the music video for this on MTV in the afternoon after 'relaxing' in the park in between lectures.

HEY JOE - LENNY KRAVITZ (1ST UK TV APPEARANCE)

I thought I was being really clever at the time using this recording from television as we were all really keen on this Lenny Kravitz chap who was fairly new to the scene. I was also a big fan of Hendrix - win+win! I must have known back then that in the future there would be this thing called the Internet that would allow me to take the same clip from something called 'YouTube' and enhance it with digital wizardry - maybe some kind of quantum entanglement at work????

BORN TO BE WILD - STEPPENWOLF

The original iteration of the Wimbledon Weekend journey companion featured a live recording of this song by The Decimals. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to get the necessary clearances in time to allow its inclusion here, so opted for this version instead.

LIGHT MY FIRE - THE DOORS

You will see by the track listing that The Doors and Hendrix feature quite heavily throughout. The Doors were undergoing a revival at the time with the release of the Oliver Stone film and Jimi Hendrix being a perennial favourite. If I'd also ventured into the desert and consumed hallucinogenic cacti then I may have had a vision of the future that could have predicted that nearly thirty years later, I would be using a thing called the Internet to recreate my travel tapes in the digital world. I'm sure that had this happened, I would have searched a little harder for a more varied roster. The bridge between space and time not really working to my benefit here, unless you're happy to hear more stuff by The Doors.

VOODOO CHILD (SLIGHT RETURN) - THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE

What a way to introduce you to Hendrix?

If you are reading this, then it is almost certain you have come across Jimi Hendrix before?

But, can you remember the first track you heard? I'm fairly certain that this was it for me. I remember meeting a couple my Dad's old hippie friends who knew that I was an ardent Prince fan, so they insisted that I listen to this straight away - YES!

ONE OF THESE DAYS - PINK FLOYD

This band also featured rather heavily in our listening habits at the time, but due to the average length of their tracks tended not to get overused on mix tapes.

LITTLE FLUFFY CLOUDS - THE ORB

I don't think the track grouping here was intentional at the time, even with the association between the two acts. It is good to see though, that I used a track by The Orb on my very first compilation, and used them again on one of my latest - nearly thirty years later!

LOVE HER MADLY - THE DOORS

Just about enough room left on here to squeeze in another track by The Doors still sounds exceptional.

NEVER LET ME DOWN - DEPECHE MODE

I associate nearly every track I hear by Depeche Mode from that era with driving or travelling. That way of thinking allows me to use virtually anything by them on a journey companion.

P-FUNK (WANTS TO GET FUNKED UP) - PARLIAMENT

Still my very favourite track by George Clinton and featured on my very first record that I bought of his (he's pictured surfing on the back of two dolphins??),

probably my favourite record sleeve bar none! (link above).

I was lucky enough to meet him years later, and he signed it for me!!!

HERE COMES THE RAIN AGAIN - EURYTHMICS

I'm sure that I used this to mix things up and to add a bit of variety, it's quite an atmospheric piece of pop and cannot be categorized with either Jimi Hendrix or The Doors, so in that respect does add a bit of variety.

101 - SHEENA EASTON

The Scottish Kylie of that era, and a Prince track at last!!
