THE GRAVY (FEAT. TRUCK TURNER)
As soon as I heard this track again recently, I knew that I had to open a dedicated Digital Underground mix with it. I can't remember exactly how I first came across them, but I vaguely remember seeing a 'special' on MTV quite a few years ago, and questioning why had I only just discovered them with more than a couple of albums already to their credit? Being a fairly serious enthusiast of the George Clinton output, this sound was never going to escape my attention.
Sampling You Gots To Chill by EPMD which you may remember me using on DIRE STRAITS R YANKS. These first two tracks would have fitted in rather well with Mr. Hansford's forthcoming COOKBOOK OF RAP show, but we've not quite finished that off yet. Anyway, this mix had to be moved up the schedule upon hearing the unfortunate news of Gregory Jacobs/Shock G passing away last Thursday (22/04).âšī¸
*Any similarities with that show are purely coincidental, I guess rappers really like rhyming about food related topics?
DOPE-A-DELIC (DO-U-B-LEEVE-IN-D-FLO?)
I've seen an interview with the sadly deceased front-man, who stated that he considers Parliament/Funkadelic to be the R&B/Funk (Black) equivalent of The Beatles. Digital Underground are undoubtedly the Hip Hop equivalent of Parliament/Funkadelic. So, on that basis...
Sampling Flash Light to get the attention of any aspiring Funkateers.
Shock G's alter ego, or whoever was up for donning the Groucho mask in the moment.
Third straight song from their initial Sex Packets album, non intentional, but pointless to lose any sleep over.
Opening with Not Just Knee Deep, if you really need me to point it out.đ
This is from Sons Of The P, which title track closed out my recent FUNKADELIC EVOLUTION show. I've just found out that George Clinton himself served as a special guest on that track as well, so it seems I had cottoned on to something after all.
If you know the Wiseguys Essential Mix from '97 inside out, then you'll recognize this? That tape also got a very serious amount of use in my car then as well.
On the strength of that, I couldn't resist pulling this about a bit to extend the breaks.
This features a sample from Tennessee by Arrested Development, which, I'm kicking myself now for not including on my WHAT'S IN THE AIR TENNESSEE? show. Probably for the best anyway, being slightly on the obvious side.
Amongst the many samples used to build this track, of note, four are attributable to George Clinton, and one is Sexuality by Prince.
The unfortunate paying of respect and giving recognition to Bill Cosby somewhat dates this track. Apart from that, I think they've just about nailed it. Thinking about it, the paying of props to successful entertainers is probably a bit dated anyway? Surely, everybody already knows just how good they are.
Up For The Down Stroke possibly?
Boni Boyer sings the backing vocals on this track. In case you don't know who Boni Boyer is, she is particularly important to Prince enthusiasts, being a key part of the Sign O The Times & Lovesexy touring band, also appearing in the Sign O The Times movie.
Recycling and utilizing a beat that you're clearly happy with.
Don't think I should comment on this track?
But it really rolls along at a steady rate, very reminiscent of a P-Funk live show.
This track features 2Pac Shakur's first appearance on a recorded release.
Shock G also produced parts of the first 2Pac solo album, and has been credited for the P-Funk take up incorporated by much of the West Coast Hip Hop sound.
Another track that would have slotted in to KARL'S COOKBOOK OF RAP, coming very soon...
