THEN PLEASE

THIS IS NOT A MONEY MAKING EXERCISE

IT HAS BEEN DONE PURELY FOR

THE LOVE OF MUSIC

AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST

BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS

900 MILES - TERRY CALLIER

Used here to accompany the opening credits of my theoretical Film Soundtrack.

Evoking images of a typical American 'Road Trip'.

I did originally have something very similar in place, but that would keep making reference to a journey based on this side of The Atlantic.

TONIGHT WE RISE - CHRYSTA BELL

I was lucky enough to see this 'Vamp' perform earlier in the year.

It seemed as though I'd stepped on to The Roadhouse set of Twin Peaks. The feel and inspiration of David Lynch was very much in the air and resonating from the stage!

BEARDED LADY MOTORCYCLE SHOW - BOT'OX

I don't think I've ever experienced a bearded lady motorcycle show, it sounds quite intriguing. The record sleeve is fantastic (no ladies, with or without beards though), and probably the reason that sparked my initial interest.

DIGITAL HUNGER - PSYCHEDELIC PORN CRUMPETS

Not sure what this would be appropriate for? I just like it, and it's new!

It sounds a bit like Prince experimenting with L.S.D.

MONEY VIBRATIONS - LITTLE BEAVER

A remarkable piece of music that needs far more exposure. The copy that I used, was of inferior quality to everything else and lacked the same punch. To remedy this, I've doubled the recording to give more of an impact, but I may have overcooked it a little??? Well, I suppose the muddy low-fi effect leads into the next few records...

TRASH - DUANE EDDY & THE REBELS

You'd expect to hear this in the America of David Lynch.

JACK THE RIPPER - LINK WRAY

This show certainly wouldn't be complete without 'The Link'.

I've been trying to squeeze this track into a mix from before I had the website.

MY MIND SET ME FREE PT.1 - HOUSE GUESTS

The start sounds a little like the Mission Impossible theme, but it's probably not intentional. After all, there are probably only a few billion musical possibilities in terms of arrangements.

WE STAND AT THE BACK OF THE BUS - UPTOWN FUNK EMPIRE

Slotting in rather well, and helping me achieve something quite different overall.

NO TIME TO WALLOW IN THE MYRRH - BO BARAL

It's worth pointing out here, that several tracks used are either Cover Versions or original recordings. I didn't want a complete mix of Covers and alternate takes, as that's already been done to death and a bit predictable. Hopefully, just by having a smattering here and there, I'll not need to go down that path.

THE GROOVE I'M IN - FLORENCE MILLER

A slice of quality Soul from an album of underused gems selected by Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez. Used here to help the transition from Funk/Soul to Indie Folk.
THE GALLOWS POLE - JOSEPHINE ONIYAMA
This should grab the attention of the Led Zeppelin enthusuasts.
I'd always assumed it was penned by the British Rockers, but it turns out that it's a fairly well known folk standard from ancient times.
CONTACT - BIG THIEF
Fitting in rather well and helping with the overall mood.

I'm not sure whether the screeching at the end is a guitar effect or a person screaming, either way, it's quite unnerving.

FLOWERS - LISA HANNIGAN

If you were lucky enough to catch Shane Meadows latest TV offering THE VIRTUES, then you may recognise this from the first part.

SCRIBBLY GUM SMOKEHOUSE - DESMOND CHEESE

This was included on a DJ mix I was listening to that did not resemble the songs featured here at all, but I knew it would follow on quite well from the preceeding piece. Now I'm unable to separate the two tracks, even if I wanted to.

SUMMER WINE - NANCY SINATRA & LEE HAZELWOOD

Lee Hazelwood along with Duane Eddy featured on a 90's compilation I put together for the car - PLANETMEECH 120, and I hope to recreate this at some stage in the coming weeks as well.

Despite the mention of 'silver spurs' and other C&W references, this unexpectedly slides into Bond territory towards the end???

IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND? - GORDON LIGHTFOOT

This was featured in an episode of Mr. Robot that I saw a while back, and I've been trying to include it ever since.

EVERYBODY'S TALKIN' - BILL WITHERS

I immediately think of Midnight Cowboy whenever I hear the original of this, and I think that it's used perfectly for the film. Hopefully this version does a similar job here, tying in with the overall feel of the project and matching up with the Funk/Soul offerings.

LET MY PEOPLE GO - DARONDO

I'm not sure how I came across this groovy little protest song, but it does conjure thoughts of travel, and of course, grooving and protesting.

DIFFERENT STROKES - SYL JOHNSON

The Breaks are strong with this one!

You may recognise the core of this sampled for B-Boy Breakdown that featured on 90 MINUTE BREAKsDOWN and Shame On A.... that I used on THE MEECH-TANG CLAN.

I'm sure that I'm not alone here, I absolutely love it when listening to old and classic songs, and you recognise Breaks and Samples that have been used elsewhere.

LOVE TO LOVE - 1619 BAD ASS BAND

I recognise this from somewhere too....🤔

NO MAN WORRIES - SPEEDOMETER

A relatively new 'old style funk groove' to keep things heading in the right direction.

HANDS OF MY LOVE - QUANTIC SOUL ORCHESTRA

This formed part of my early mix, and I think I've extended it along the way??

BROTHERS OF THE RED - 9 LAZY 9

I'm amazed that this is the first time I'm calling on 9 Lazy 9.

I used to focus quite heavily on the Ninja Tune releases during my record buying heyday, and I've had a tremendous amount of pleasure listening to 9 Lazy 9 ever since being introduced to them on the John Peel show. This also evokes thoughts and feelings that tie in to the overall effect.

I've just decided!

I'm going to work on a dedicated 9 Lazy 9 project eventually, get ready!!

MR CHOMBLEE HAS THE FLAW - THE HERBALISER

More Beats from the Ninja Tune stable.

900 MILES - GEMMA RAY

More Folk standards from way back.

As mentioned at the very top, this would be used here to play out over the closing titles.

This version featured in my initial Playlist, before it even had a firm name.

You may be able to tell that I've also been heavily influenced by the greatest DJ that has ever walked our planet.

John Peel would often throw in different or contrasting versions of songs into his shows too.
