A piece of instrumental Hip-Hop to lull you into a false sense of security.
There was a time when I used to JUST buy and listen to whole albums of this sort,
there is a future project in the pipeline to reflect this.
I've managed to sneek in a few additional Mike Tyson samples here and there to compliment other tracks and references.
I always wanted to start off with this as the opener, as they teased the build up of this and made a fairly big deal of it when I saw them perform a few years back.
I’m fairly sure that the RZA is handling MC duties here, so quite happy to use this towards the beginning to let everybody know what they’re getting into as his voice is quite distinctive.
This track needs to be towards the beginning of the mix because of the pace and urgency. The sample, although profanity laden, does offer a legitimacy to the use of expletives.
While we’re on the subject, I would like to apologise for any offence caused. Anybody that knows me would have to agree that I hardly ever use bad language unless absolutely necessary.
Besides, this is art!
Bobby Digital, as you can hear is another alter ego of The RZA, I do have at least a complete album of that material, but had trouble locating it in a digital format as Bobby Digital is also a completely different recording artist!
This wrong footed me when buying an album during my record buying heyday, only to find out when I got home that I'd picked up an album by a Jamaican Dub artist - every cloud and all that.....
PIMPIN’ CHIPP - GHOSTFACE KILLAH
I love the Blaxploitation feel of this track. I’ve been very careful not to overuse the same recording artist, so have needed to strip out a few other entries from earlier drafts.
SHAME ON A N****A - WU-TANG CLAN
The Syl Johnson track that this samples will definitely feature at some stage in the future - get ready!
I think this is the definitive Wu-Tang track for me as it showcases the differing MC output of the Clan.
IRON MAIDEN - GHOSTFACE KILLAH, REAKWON & CAPPADONNA
As above. You also get the 70’s era Blaxploitation feel, enhanced by the film sample at the beginning and end.
SEMI AUTOMATIC : FULL RAP METAL JACKET - STREET LIFE, U-GOD & INSPECTAH DECK
The RZA is famed for his production skills, well I think you can really hear it here.
However, I've needed to fade in a few of the more ubrupt intros elsewhere to achieve a smoother overall flow.
DON’T YOU KNOW - OL' DIRTY BASTARD
Adding something a little different again, I had wanted to place ODB a little closer to the beginning with samples of Eli Wallach from Good, The Bad and The Ugly but couldn't get the flow to work.
I couldn’t issue a Wu-Tang show without including this. Not only crowd pleasing but planetmeech pleasing as well.
THE GHETTO (FEAT. REAKWON, CAPPADONNA & U-GOD - GHOSTFACE KILLAH, REAKWON, CAPPADONNA & U-GOD
I still remember David Holmes playing the original of this on his most popular Essential Mix, so there was no doubt it would get used on this project.
Placing it here also fits my loose template of winding things down towards the midway point.
DUEL OF THE IRON MIC (FEAT. MASTA KILLAH) - GZA
I had wanted to steer clear of featuring the trademark Kung Fu samples, but the task would prove too great. I'm guessing this is another reference to the youngest ever Heavyweight world champion?
LIFE IS A MOVIE (FEAT. RZA & IRFANE KHAN-ACITO) - GZA
Here I’m referencing the very first show by HEAVY PC - genius!
With The Genius!
Locking on to a more traditional Hip-Hop groove for the second half
- New York style.
TRAIN TRUSSLE (FEAT. GHOSTFACE KILLAH & SCOTTY WOTTY - U-GOD
I'm really pleased with how these tracks are fitting together adding texture to the second half. This track gave me the idea to use the additional Tyson samples and even now, I'm still hearing further references and nods elsewhere.
1112 (FEAT. MASTA KILLAH, KILLAH PRIEST & NJERI) - GZA
I'm guessing that Ghostface Killah and GZA
are probably going to tie for the honour of most used act on this show. I should probably try and limit their use - nah!
WALKING THROUGH THE DARKNESS (FEAT. TAKITHA) - GHOSTFACE KILLAH
Great that this uses Across 110th Street as the main sample, and anything that reminds me of my favourite Tarrantino film can't be bad.
This reminds me of Cross The Breeze by Sonic Youth, I know the piano sample is slightly different but it still puts a smile on my face. This also ticks off another core member, I'm hoping I've not missed anyone ???
MOVAS & SHAKERS - INPECTAH DECK
Changing the pitch down now, running towards the end - Inspectah Deck ✅
Turn the Mutha Funkin' bass up. ✅
SHADOWBOXIN' (FEAT METHOD MAN) - GZA
When I picked up this album originally, it was part of a multi buy. In order to qualify for the promotional price, I needed to buy several albums at once.
A colleague at the time could not believe that I had nothing by The Pixies in my digital library, so I foolishly thought I should remedy this on my next visit to the record store.
Upon presenting my purchases to the cashier (who resembled Milhouse from The Simpsons), it was pointed out that I had selected an absolutely ground breaking record, I wrongly assumed he was referring to The Pixies and embarrassed myself by not aknowledging The GZA.
*Note, The Pixies did not meet my approval and never made it into my library!
There's a moral to this tale......
Never buy music using this rationale. 😂
FACE OFF - CZARFACE & GHOSTFACE KILLAH
I was going to defend the use of all the Marvel references in this show as most of it was recorded before the Disney/Marvel takeover of the world. However, this was released in 2019, so I guess they just like comic books?
Following on with the wind down and providing another green tick. ✅
HIPPA TO DA HOPPA - OL' DIRTY BASTARD
Continuing with the slower pace and adding something a little different musically, plus the unique rasping vocal of ODB.
IMPOSSIBLE (FEAT. TAKITHA) - WU-TANG CLAN FEAT. TAKITHA
As close to an epic close out number we're going to get,
but I think it does the job.
Self explanatory.
I have an idea for a Fung Fu themed show that will lean heavily on this kind of material - watch out for BIG TROUBLE FROM LITTLE CHINA.
