NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT A MONEY MAKING EXERCISE
IT HAS BEEN DONE PURELY FOR
THE LOVE OF MUSIC
AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST
BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS
TURNING ON THE SCREW - QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE
I remember listening to this at either a large HMV or Virgin Megastore on the day of release and knew that I had to use it as an opening track for one of my compilations, not knowing that it would take until now. I think the lyrics are very well considered and the rif certainly sets the stall out for everything else.
Not one of the better known tracks by myself, not being that familiar with Houses Of The Holy, but works so well here.
Attracted to this initially because of the name of the group but used here to fit with the current run of tracks.
IF I HAD CHANGED MY MIND - TOM VEK
Originally earmarked for NO LEGS 90 but could not fit within the final mix. I was also concious of not using too many tracks from the same Tummy Touch album.
GONZO'S COINTREAU - PINK SKULL
Hit the link to see why I started playing this - madness?
CLASS OF 73 BELLS - PREFUSE 73
I'm guessing the artwork on the record sleeve is by the same graphic artist or studio that does the sleeves for a popular UK Hip Hop act we all know? This was enough for me to dive in and instantly thought that it could be used to add a little something different.
ALWAYS CRASHING IN THE SAME CAR - DAVID BOWIE
You will see by the track selection and the artists used that I was attempting to reflect what would be heard when contact has been made with PLANETMEECH by the probe sent out in P MINUS ONE to reach and communicate with planetmeech radio. It is also supposed to work as a kind of bridge to our earlier compilation work.
This song features on one of my favourite Bowie albums and the song title should have particular relevance to me but I think it's meant metaphorically?
As above, and I'm not that familiar with this period of 'The Mode' either, so I'm more than happy to listen to it several times over while I craft this show.
GYPSY EYES - THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE
Continuing the nostalgic theme with a track that I absolutely love and I've been trying to add it to a compilation for years.
As above and rounding off the current run of songs - leading into the next track really well.
SHIFTING SANDS - THE WEST COAST POP ART EXPERIMENTAL BAND
Used here as a way to link with the last few songs and a bridge to the new content, the track title being particularly relevant.
Follows on quite well from the last track and originally intended to lead into something from a film score. No need to mention which composer...
At last, room for this gem! Placed here because of the tenuous link to the track before, I'm sure our favourite bearded DJ of the 90's would have done something similar?
Understated intricate sonic landscape leading into......
I love this piece as I'm always reminded of a record by Surreal Madrid that I used to play repeatedly that uses a sample at the start as the basis for the whole track. Because of this, I decided to recreate the loop for my radio intro used after all the guitar craziness at the beginning.
Expect the track mentioned to appear in the next few weeks, all things being well.
I was tempted to save this for one of the MEECHSPLOITATION projects, but was quite keen to use it sooner rather than later.
YOUNG, GIFTED AND BLACK - BIG DADDY KANE
I was tempted to save this one for the Big Daddy Kane project - joking of course. I REALLY love the break and it was also used by Deckwrecka to very good effect. I may even try to squeeze in the original sampled track for a jazz/blues project/segment in the future.
The East side of L.A. to be precise but I really don't want to stir up any ill feeling with the 'homes.
WATCH ME DO IT - MASS PRODUCTION
Funk as a musical style in its many different guises and off shoots has been my absolute favourite source of music since 1986, so to come across completely new (to me) avenues of output, however old or new (preferably circa 1970's) is a real treat and the main reason I still have a real passion for the sound.
ORERE ELEJIGBO - THE LIDJADU SISTERS
You must check out the link above. If I were a Liverpool fan - I'm not! I'd be very worried about Sadio Mané breaking his ankle in those crazy boots?
I was tempted to save this for the much spoken of Lidjadu Sisters project- HA!
Joking aside, I don't have the faintest idea what they are singing about but I love the twin vocals and the undercurrent of funk. Due to the deep space monitering by planetmeech radio, we are treated to music from all corners of our own planet.
I was going to use this in my PLANETMEECH GLOBAL 90 project but really wanted to squeeze it in here.
PLAY SOME RAVE FOR ME - STRANGER
I like using something unexpected right at the end of the mix as...
a. a reward for the listener for making it all the way through.
b. a reward for myself.
* I assume that the majority of listeners switch off before the end, so is only aimed at the very few who listen right the way through and therefore more likely to appreciate what I have to offer.
*I'm guessing that not that many people will be reading these notes either, so....
DISCO BABY SEXY BABY HOT!! which is covered by both a. and b.
