IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE MADE AWARE WHEN FUTURE PROJECTS BECOME AVAILABLE,
THEN PLEASE
NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT A MONEY MAKING EXERCISE
IT HAS BEEN DONE PURELY FOR
THE LOVE OF MUSIC
AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST
BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS
Slam and Soma Records have been a major influence on my listening habits for many, many years and this particular track is perfect for the story I'm trying to convey in this project. I came across this record whilst looking for another tune that will feature later in...
After the high intensity of the opener, it seemed the only logical step was to make track no.2 a Bond theme. This will always rank no.3 in popularity with a wider audience but for me, it edges the more well known themes by the Welsh singing icon with the famous lungs.
JUST A F****N' IDIOT - FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON
Not something that immediately springs to mind when creating a space themed set, but I was desperate to link this and the next track because whenever I listened to this in the past, I always imagined that I could hear samples and sound effects that could have been taken from the film below??
THE BLACK HOLE - PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
Although not a terribly memorable film, the musical score is outstanding! This just happens to be my very first experience of going to the cinema, so it holds a very special place in my personal history. In my opinion, this is John Barry's best effort outside of the Bond films, and ties in extremely well with other pieces used here. You may be able to tell that I've removed all the Disney influenced guff at the beginning and end of what I've managed to capture.
Ironic isn't it, that Disney seemed intent on copying back in the 70's, what they are slowly destroying today? If you can, I recommend that you take what I've used and slow it down a notch for an even longer moment of aural pleasure. Something I attempted here but thought best not to include with this selection.
SPACE MARCH - LEFTFIELD & DAVID ARNOLD
Works perfectly at tying all the ideas together on many levels.
ROCKETS AND MOONSHOTS - MARVIN GAYE
A bonus remix of Inner City Blues and the very first track that came to mind when it was decided we were doing a space themed mix. However, I couldn't locate it straightaway and ended up going with something altogether very different by the same artist. After several failed attempts to make things fit, I did manage to unearth this fairly obscure version, and I think it now has a better flow.
Not something that jumps out at you as being related to the space theme. Until...........you see the record sleeve!
Another album that I immediately turned to given the theme, and it’s always good to hear Kool Keith in whatever guise he wishes to record under.
This was one of the very first records I thought of when it was agreed that we were going with the space theme. Unfortunately, I could not track down a digital version, so hunted through my records. Due to downsizing/moving/getting older, I’ve neglected to keep my records in any particular order, so spent quite a while looking for it. The really positive thing to come out of my disregard for any sort of logical order is that I came across about two thirds of this mix whilst searching through my boxes - YOU BEAUTY!! I think that may have been my intention and forward thinking all along....
I GOTTA BAD FEELING ABOUT THIS - SUPERGENIUS
It didn't take too much thought to recruit music from this project, although tracking it down did prove tricky.
GATCHAMAN THEME RE-DO - HOYT CURTIN
Again, an obvious choice for me, and transitions tremendously well with the next offering.
SPACE 1999 MAIN TITLES - BARRY GRAY
A great piece of 70's television sci-fi funk.
Prince originally alerted me to their work, not personally though but through various interviews I've read over the years. They do sound like a seventies version of the electric jazz fusion sound he was going for with his Madhouse projects. But I've used this piece specifically as a sound effect to string the ideas together.
DARK SIDE OF THE MELOON - ORGANIC AUDIO
Used here for the spacey/slow build effect for the beginning of the second half and another record I unearthed in my earlier search.
I came across this also as I was searching for the Spacepimp record and had to include it.
BEATS THRU SPACE - CUT CHEMIST
Fits in well with the current feel of the mix.
As mentioned above and above that.
As mentioned previously, and it was also on my absolute favourite album from that year (2000) - V..FOR VENGEANCE!, not readily available but well worth checking out. The track itself is not that attributable to the space theme, but you cannot separate it from its association with the third film in the Alien franchise which does tie in. And the late 90's/early 00's beats match up very well to this current segment.
If you already have this or can track it down, then you'll see that I had to remove the sample from I.D. which definitely doesn't fit with the theme of space. (football hooligans in space? Maybe an idea for a future show??).
As above etc, etc, etc.....
Almost last but not in any way least, something else that I picked up from my record collecting days at the very beginning of the century. Although, on its own, the track is great, when used towards the end of this mix, it tended to drag a little. I wanted to do something a bit different to wrap things up, so I had this crazy idea of engulfing/overlapping the next track whilst replicating/creating a musical 'black hole'. You're probably thinking WTF? But in my head.....it works!!
Rounding off the 90's/00's vinyl nostalgia segment.
SLEEPING UFO - GENETIC DRUGS & JASMON
I'm not sure how this ended up in my iCloud music library, but I'm glad that it did.
Used at the very end, over the closing titles of my no.1 film (Dune (1984)) which fortunately also happens to be set in space.
