SELIG SIND, DIE DA WILLIG ARM SIND - POPUL VUH

God knows what kind of mood I was in when I started to put these first few tracks together, one of gloom I suspect?

THE THINGS YOU SAID - DEPECHE MODE

Following on with more dreary stuff.

I think I wanted to try something a bit different, and approach things from a slightly new angle?

I think I set out to come up with an instalment that was like no other that had gone before, naming it ROCKY 5 made perfect sense.

The first four Rocky films took up a considerable amount of my VHS usage during my junior years, I still remember the shock I felt the first time that I saw Rocky V.

It was like my childhood had been snatched away in just 104 minutes.

INTO THE NIGHT - JULEE CRUISE & ANGELO BADALAMENTI

Another entry from David Lynch's Industrial Symphony No.1.

Originally taped from my VHS recording of the television broadcast.

The digital copy from the album that I now have in my library really didn't sound exactly how I remembered it, so I tracked what I'd used before down on YouTube.

SPRUNG AUS DEN WOLKEN (ORIGINAL) - DJ HELL

I'm sure that this always seemed to be playing in the car whenever I would take my Nan shopping. I suspect she wasn't really a fan of DJ Hell, but you never know?

I've always referred to this as John Peel's Blocks Of Noise.

Thankfully, now that I've been using that handy little application on my phone, I can now correctly identify it as this.

GULF BREEZE (ZETAN MIX) - EAT STATIC

A slight bit of crossover with this and SUMMERTIME JOY WITH HEAVY PC, but I really don't think anybody cares apart from us?

I did consider changing it, but this is a slightly different mix anyway.

Budha knows where I got hold of this version at the time?

The original tape is just about 25 years old, so really shouldn't be messed around with now.

TWEAKIN' - GEORGE CLINTON

GC crossing over with The Rolling Stones of Hip Hop.

This was from George Clinton's first album to be released on Prince's Paisley Park, and I think it could have been my very first exposure to the crazy funk alien from outer space.

BIG TIME SENSUALITY - BJöRK

You'll notice that I have two different tracks by Björk, and should have really replaced one of them. But I couldn't decide which, so they both stay.

THE CUTTER - ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN

This had always been labelled by me as Drop In The Ocean, until technology came to the rescue.

I'd placed a sample on the actual journey tape after this track, asking 'how the hell did that get here'?

I'm guessing back then, I was less willing to own up to appreciating anything at all like this??

They also make an appearance on two of my 80's shows, so it's safe to say that I've gotten over whatever perceived stigma I thought they may have had?

TOOTH-FAIRY RETRIBUTION MANIFESTO - RODAN

I only ever had a copy of the Rodan album on tape, and that did get an awful lot of use in the car.

Not having driven for quite a few years now, I'd completely forgotten all about this band, until I kick started this whole adventure when I bought a retro tape recorder from Amazon.

ELIMINATOR JNR. - SONIC YOUTH

The missing section from SONIC MEECH, Part three of the trilogy that closes out Daydream Nation (click the link for further explanation, if you need any?).

I remember feeling quite happy that I'd managed to fill up a very tight bit of space at the end of the first side, and at the same time join these very similar sounding tracks together.

TEMPTATION - PRINCE & THE REVOLUTION

I probably felt at the time that this would enhance the different approach, therefore, naming it ROCKY 5 was fully justified.

I neglected to include anything from the psychedelic follow up to Purple rain on my Prince show, I guess this makes up for it? I'm sure that wasn't on my mind though back in 1995.

Or was it?

Could it be the future has already happened, and that everything exists in the very same moment. Past, present and future all occuring at the exact same time?🤔

SCHUDELFLOSS - DR ATOMIC

Whenever I watch 2001 A Space Odyssey, I'm always racking my brain to think exactly where I recognise the Hal sample from, I remember hearing it somewhere amongst my ever growing collection of music.

Not until I'd added this, did I realise just where. I realise know that I'd not actually listened to this track since my motoring days.

KINCAJOU - BANCO DE GAIA

This sort of thing was all the rage when you find yourself listening to The Orb in high doses.

SHINE - THE JOY

As above, and with an appearance by Denise Johnson, then plenty to grab my attention.

You will have noticed that I've chopped this down considerably, as I did on the travel cassette.

It was a fairly bold move to include a track of this length at the time.

I think in reality I was just using it to cut a few corners, and needed to fill a bit of space.

EVERYBODY'S TALKIN' - HARRY NILSSON

This sort of thing was all the rage when you find yourself being heavily influenced by the world of film.

SHE CAME IN THROUGH THE BATHROOM WINDOW - THE BEATLES

More Beatles I'm afraid. This really was a document of a very different era. From a time long before digital files, the iPod , and on-line streaming services.

When these early journey tapes were created, I had very different priorities when it came to my disposable cash, so tended to fall back on Mr Meech The Elder's record collection, taping stuff from mates, borrowing from the library, and recording anything interesting I could get from the radio.

BECAUSE YOU'RE YOUNG - DAVID BOWIE

This was actually copied from Phil.

COME TO ME - BJöRK

I may have bought this?

Hearing these tracks work together now puts a huge smile on my face, and takes me right back to my days spent driving around - everywhere.

GOOD NIGHT - THE BEATLES

Logically used here with delicate precision.

Having two tracks each by both The Beatles and Björk does seem quite odd now, but not nearly as strange as giving this the title of Rocky 5??
