I played my old vinyl version of Prince Charming recently and really enjoyed the brass on this track. Has a real Latin summer feel to it and is a jaunty opener to this show.
SUMMON THE FIRE - THE COMET IS COMING
More brass although this is way filthier. The aim of this show is to evoke the feeling of being overexcited on a hot summer afternoon and dancing away early in proceedings before it all gets a bit hazier later in the day.
This one reminds me of May/June evenings, after work, heading out in the car and going to Farley Mount to partake in a bit of medicinal smoking…and then one day I found myself at Glastonbury, on my own very early in the morning, dancing away live to this. Not only is this tracked heaped in nostalgia, it’s also very, very good. Although I do remember a contemporary of ours once describing it as ‘a bit too spacey’.
This one reminds me of very hazy summers in the mid-oo’s as my friend, and former landlord, used to play it a hell of a lot. Apart from maybe Pendulum (inexplicably) I have never seen a festival crowd react to a tune like they did to this one…and I’m not playing Pendulum that’s for sure.
EMPIRE ANTS - GORILLAZ FEATURING LITTLE DRAGON
I am a sucker for a bit of Damon Albarn - I think he has a very impressive body of work - diverse and varied. I like the hazy start and the steady build up to the second half of the track. Hot summers, country roads! Still dancing at this stage of the show but things are beginning to get a bit weird…
Sometimes overlooked for being a bit of a Championship level Brit Pop band which isn’t really fair as this is an epic piece of music and their Giant Steps album is really good and was critically acclaimed at the time as I remember. Still dancing but might make an occasional light stumble…
Power nap on a bean bag
SOL SUR SOL - COSMIC ANALOGUE EMSEMBLE
Dare I say it but just a hit of Morricone here? But also a hint of 60s psychedelic whimsy. It has The West smothered all over it.
I think this is my favourite Supergrass track - I know that I used this in my Glastonbury 2000 travel tape which, alas, I have lost the track listing to. Reminds me of Animals era Floyd - should have some Floyd on here really…also the last band I saw live before gigs ended.
LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE - PALMA VIOLETS
Mid-decade indie darlings who have now disappeared without a trace, seemingly. I quite like the fella’s vocal style, it gets a bit shouty and I also like the organ. The finale is great too.
JUNE JULY 28 - BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW
This has a lovely hazy feel about it - good band this lot - worth checking out their catalogue.
I think this has a real summer feel about it - reminds me of the long hot summer of ’95…I think.
Here we go - my first World Cup proper (I remember ‘82 but not well). Maradona, Lineker, Valdano, Falcao, Socrates…Peter Reid! This was one hell of a World Cup and this was the BBC’s theme which I think is absolutely superb - summers can be defined by World Cups so it had to be included.
I love a bit of Latin during the summer - I have a few bits by this band - check out their cover of ‘Alone Again Or’
LAY BACK IN THE SUN - SPIRITUALIZED
The last band I saw at my first Glastonbury - headlined the NME Stage (I think) and I was blown away - never used to be too enthusiastic by Sunday evening at a festival but this was the perfect tonic.
SUMMER MADNESS - KOOL & THE GANG
This is a hot July evening with a scooby and a beer.
BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT YOU'VE GOT (DAVID TODD MIX) - WILLIAM DEVAUGHN
I listen to a lot more soul these days than I did in my younger days - it rarely gets better than this.
SLEEP & SWIM (LIKE A SHARK) - UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA
The guitar hook, the distorted vocals, the pace, and the sentiment all make for great summer listening.
I think this is sheer perfection, gorgeous. Almost didn’t put it on here as I want to keep it for myself and not share. I never want it to end! Features highly in my “Most Played’ list on my favourite streaming platform. Mrs heavy pc and myself enjoy this on a summers evening.
Oh..OK…couldn’t resist. Meddle is underrated in the Floyd canon in my opinion.
I can’t deny that I really enjoy Moby’s mega-selling, crass sell-out of an album…Play. This is like watching the last sunset…ever. Or the first sunset ever?
Me dicking around…
