I really wanted to open with this or either Tom Violence.
I still have solid memories of seeing Kim Gordon standing centre stage, wearing a fur waistcoat, emerging from the dry ice playing the first few bars of this bass heavy song. A great way to open a live set,
so must equally be as good for planetmeech radio.
Tom violence did appear on my first draft, but didn't sound as crisp when sat with all the other recordings.
I've seen them perform on many other occasions without these two songs being played at all, but these are all I remember as openers.
I think Shoot is probably their coolest record anyway.
Whilst we're on the subject of opening tracks...
This was played at the start of their 4th July Battery Park show that got released earlier this summer and was essential listening during my visit to Ibiza.
Taken from one of the lesser known later albums and used here to generate a bit of energy after the fairly slow groove approach of the opening two tracks.
Now we are in premium Sonic Youth Gold territory.
Still there.
I get where you're coming from Thurston, although, the lyrics could suggest something a bit more allegorical?
Perfect for a journey tape.
It's no coincidence, that during my summer break (as mentioned above), I was listening to nothing but Sonic Youth and reading Goodbye 20th Century.
My summer read gave me the idea, amongst others, to include this song.
Unmistakably and definitely Sonic Youth.
LEAKY LIFEBOAT (FOR GREGORY CORSO)
This featured on their final album, but still manages to sound quite fresh and optimistic. Watch out for the false ending (not added by me).
KIM GORDON AND THE ARTHUR DOYLE HAND CREAM
I think Kim Gordon sounds a bit like that chap from Police Academy with the screeching voice here - I hope that was the intention.
I think I will be selecting the Girl In A Band book, to accompany my next trip away.
As we're in Goo territory, you'll notice that I added the Dirty Boots intro in the same vein as the Kool Thing snippet. I didn't want to go with either of those two tunes, as I think they can both stand on their own. I've included this though, as it's difficult to separate from the album, so represents the whole L.P. here.
Another selection that was inspired by reading the book.
It turns out that a World Tade Centre amount of rubble was raining down on the Murray Street Studios during the recording of this!
Shit!!!
I caught this tour as well (NYC Ghosts & Flowers).
I think it was the fist gig I attended after spending some time in a wheelchair - good bit of rehab, thanks Mr. Langham.
I've unwhittingly reflected a typical Sonic Youth album, by including only one number sung by Lee Ranaldo.
(THE TRILOGY : PART 1) THE WONDER
If Sympathy For The Strawberry had never existed, then The Trilogy would have to be used to close out the mix.
I couldn't really use this either in it's intended form,
as the final part (Eliminator Jnr.) had already been used on Rocky 5.
(THE TRILOGY : PART 2) HYPERSTATION
The last time I saw them perform live was on the Daydream Nation (complete album) tour, and this sticks in the mind.
Luckily for me, it was at The Roundhouse and I managed to persuade
Mrs. planetmeech to go. If it had not been so local, I may have missed out,
as (she's not) too keen on Sonic Youth.
(she wasn't) in a bad mood thankfully, as we could walk home.

As covered above.
This was probably the very first song I thought of when I started to put this mix together.
