Most Prince songs of the eighties have a special meaning 4 me.
This, however, has extra significance.
Apart from it being the very first Prince 12" I would buy, which is a fairly big thing, considering just how many subsequent Prince records I've bought.
It was playing as I walked in 2 a fairly cool bar in Brixton.
This was my very first night out in London after moving there!
Life seems 2 be one long algorithm...
This featured on a bootleg cassette of out-takes I used 2 have, a while before it was released as a b-side 4 the Batman project. I've adjusted the pitch down slightly, so the vocals are a bit more recognisable 2 the 'casual' Prince listener, and 2 give the 'serious' Prince enthusiasts something 2 take note of.
I listened 2 this at the incorrect speed 4 quite a substantial period - bootlegs!
I'm certain that The Black album was the first time I had bought anything remotely non-official.
If I didn't need 2 open with Sign 'O' The Times, this could have definitely kicked things off.
I love the sinister wind effect at the beginning, and would have been very pleased 2 open with that. Sorry, I've just realised I did (just the wind effect).
I think Prince must have been fairly pleased with this.
It was also the first track older than Purple rain that I would hear.
Not only featured in the amazing 1 hour TV Birthday Show from Detroit, but included on a 12" release from 1986.
Another track that I'd listened 2 frequently as a poor quality bootleg. Now I can hear it properly, I realise that I'd mistakenly assumed it was from a later period and style.
I cannot even speculate just how many times I've listened 2 this over the years. Even now, it sounds so strange and unlike anything else I've heard.
Talking of strange....
This is from the 'fallow' period that I experienced when I didn't think the music world revolved around Minneapolis any more. I'd started going 2 festivals and gigs, and my listening habits reflected this. However, this has stood out and the following track was just waiting 4 it 2 come along and link 2.
Probably my favourite out-take, something I was very familiar with before it was included on the Graffiti Bridge soundtrack.
Probably my second favourite out-take, and again something I was very familiar with, LONG before it was included on the released version of Crystal Ball.
Used here 2 move things on 4 the second half.
I'm not deliberately trying 2 tick off tracks from each album of the 70's and 80's.
You may have noticed though, I've not included anything from
Around The World In A Day, but I have selected 2 b-sides from that project. Probably 2 of the best b-sides ever recorded!
A fantastic song structure that I appreciate more with every listen, and I've listened 2 it a fair bit.
During the eighties, I wouldn't have attempted 2 put these songs from different decades on the same tape, the change in style seemed far greater. Now the 70's & 80's are way in the past, they seem closer some how??
This track tends 2 get overlooked, that's why I'm including it here. Not to be confused with a similar named track with an additional T.
This marks the first time that I'm introduced 2 the wonders of the b-side.
Thinking about it now, this 'remix' could be the track that sparked my initial interest - not the Purple Rain album! But that did help.
I really like this in the running order of the album, so I've attempted 2 use it here in the same way.
By the time this was released, on the reverse of If I Was Your Girlfriend?
The genie was well and truly out of the bottle.
Extra paper rounds were requested in order 2 feed my new addiction 4 vinyl.
Is this everyone's favourite b-side? It's mine 4 sure!
This turns a fairly light number into something epic.
