THEN PLEASE
THIS IS NOT A MONEY MAKING EXERCISE
IT HAS BEEN DONE PURELY FOR
THE LOVE OF MUSIC
AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST
BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS
I HEAR THE VIBRATIONS - WOODEN SHIJPS
This immediately jumped out at me for being a strange update of Contact by Bridgette Bardot from the sixties. That version was used to open THE beloved Essential Mix by everyone's favourite Irish DJ/Producer & Film Scorer, David Holmes.
Wooden Shijps are actually from San Francisco, despite their name suggesting otherwise. There appear to be many references made to California in the back catalogue, so another appearance is likely in any updated
MOIST SOUNDS project that was originally put together as a Californian travel companion for the future Mrs. planetmeech.
VICTIMS OF MOMENTUM - SISTERS OF YOUR SUNSHINE VAPOUR
Continuing with the sixties feel, and according to my sources this act also hails from the U.S. Ypsilanti, Michigan. Until very recently, I had never come across Ypsilanti before, now I am seeing it everywhere????
This unfortunately, touches on the manic Kasabian style wailing that seems to be present in nearly every one of the Kasabian releases. Thankfully, the quality pulls through, and banishes any similarity with those hairy rockers from Leicester.
*It turns out that they are not that hairy as a band,
just the one that looks like The Mighty Boosh.
MAKES ME FEEL SO HIGH - THE KUNDALINI GENIE
Scoring initial points with Mrs. Planet by making reference to the mystical yogic arts.
This could also have slotted in nicely to PIPES, BONGS & OTHER STUFF, my half of the forthcoming narcotic double project created in conjunction with HEAVY PC.
Scoring points with any fans of mud, zionic or otherwise. In my mind, this ties in with the alternative therapy theme of the previous track.
THE ELECTRIC MOUNTAIN - JANE WEAVER
Changing tone. I've made a note of this lady, more to follow, especially when you need a tone changing entry.
Changing language with this piece of Tokyo based psychedelic rock...wonderful!
All sounds very Nordic?
After all, Finland and Japan appear to be strangely twinned.
Not only does the name Kimi Räikkönen sound Japanese, the popular monotone F1 champion is very marketable in the land of the rising sun.
No need to mention the sitar, I think it may have been synthesised anyway.
Bother! I've just mentioned the sitar.
DREAMS - THE KOOLAID ELECTRIC COMPANY
According to Apple Music, this falls into the genre of Adult Alternative.
I'm not sure if that's Alternative music only intended for adults, or carrying an adults only warning because the name of the band refers to a cult sponsored mass suicide?
Also, until very recently, I don't think I was that aware of Jonestown, or the massacre. Now I seem to be coming across references on a near daily basis.
The spooky undertone lends itself perfectly to follow on from the previous track, and slots in with precision to bring the first half to a close.
FUTSU NI IKIRENAI - MINAMI DEUTSCH
More interesting music from Japan.
ENTRANCE SONG - THE BLACK ANGELS
Interesting music from Austin, Texas. Somewhere that I am very keen to visit, once we get past all this lock-down nonsense.
SURFING ON SATURN - SECRET SAUCER
Also somewhere I'd be quite happy to visit,
once we get past this one planet only rule.
THE MAN WITH THE LITTLE HANDS - KINGDOM OF THE HOLY SUN
Ha! If only I'd been aware of this when The Donald was still a problem.
I may have to resurrect it for 2024?
Surprisingly, the first band as far as I know, to call themselves The Men.
Hats off to The Men then.
Surprisingly, not the first band to use this name.
This would have gone down exceedingly well with a particular Capri enthusiast that we used to roll with.
Another minimal sound voyage courtesy of these former Trancers from Chile, after an earlier appearance on THE PANIC DIMENSION.
I'm seriously considering the stipulation of a new rule if you're reading this Af?
*We must both use at least 1 Moon Duo track on every mix, no exception!
I first heard about these by listening to the weekly Andrew Weatherall show well over a year ago, probably just a few weeks before his untimely passing, and quickly set about inserting them in to my current show PLANETMEECH MMXX.
From one of my two most revered DJ's that have ever lived, to the other...
...This came to my attention in the nineties, by being an avid listener of The John Peel show. Not from the same time period at all then, but follows on perfectly. It matches so well, that you'd believe it was recorded by the same musicians, in the very same studio session!
