Sets the tone perfectly for what lies ahead...
I was tipped off about Cat Power by reading a Sonic Youth biography that made continued references to the Experimental New York Rock scene of the 90's.
Although the Mono to Stereo confusion at the very beginning was probably intentional at the time of recording, I couldn't open a show without adjusting the first five or six seconds. I didn't want it to stand out on the blue-tooth headphone technology of the 21st century.
SOUL AUCTIONEER - DEATH IN VEGAS
I first heard this around the time that I started living, going out and buying records in London. A few years into that, and I have a huge smack on the head that seriously affects my memory!
I rediscovered this record fairly recently, and instantly wanted to include it in this project. I did remember that Death In Vegas was Richard Fearless, but wasn't sure who the vocalist was?
After several listens, I still didn't know, and just assumed it was a band member singing in the style of the Primal Scream front man.
I would get progressively wound up, the more that I listened to it, and even considered removing it to avoid people thinking that I've selected a track with a knock off Bobbie Gillespie.
*I only found out the identity of the guest vocalist a few days ago - HA!
Now that I know who it is, I'm much more comfortable while listening.
This fits with the feel of these other records with the off kilter sounds of the mid to late nineties, and ties in with Death In Vegas also.
As above, with a little bit of Bristol based instrumental Hip Hop thrown in.
During the height of my gig attending all through the nineties, I would often hear this being played before the main act. I'm sure it must have been a staple of the pre gig DJ?
Keeping you on your toes with this minimal Avant Garde synth workout from a few years earlier.
This gets quite hypnotic towards the end and definitely sticks in the head after it finishes. I'm also always keen to include anything that mentions a radio, a planet, or even a........Meech??
WILD EYED ( ANDREW WEATHERALL MIX) - THE HORRORS
Get ready!
I will be compiling a show based on the remix work of Andrew Weatherall in the near future.
A slight leaning towards guitars from the Bathing Ape creator.
THE MYSTERIOUS VANISHING OF ELECTRA - ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF
This song is absolutely tremendous!
It would have been perfect to close out the show, but I didn't want it to get lost at the end. Hopefully, moving it here, sparks the interest of the listener for the rest of the mix.
The algorithms are detecting a slight swing towards Sweden.
TODAY, TUESDAY - FRIDA HYVöNEN
Changing the pace, but keeping with the current Swedish theme.
I once wrote a song called Tuesday for the Decimals. If only it had been a fraction as good as this?
This had been earmarked for a future show, but due to recent events, has been moved up to mark the passing of Ginger Baker.
I think it was always supposed to be on this project anyway.
SUPER TOUCHY - THE STRANGE COLLECTIVE
Slotting in to help bolster the strangeness.
Following on with an entirely different feel, but that's the point all along.
Included here to add to the general feeling of uneasiness, as well as appearing on the DC Recordings label (J Saul Kane/Depth Charge), of which I am particularly partial.
SET PHAZER TO STUN - THE TIME & SPACE MACHINE
Set those Organs & Effects to stun!!
Working us up into the Panic Dimension.
Add another from DC Recordings, and I think we're nearly there.
The inclusion of the sample from The Thing ('82), was part subconscious/part luck/part experimentation, but 100% the right thing to do!
This track makes me think of Gary Newman collaborating with John Carpenter.
The album III by Gui Boratto is well worth checking out by the way, if you like that sort of thing?
