I am well aware of all the usual wedding reception fodder that get carted out at all the usual wedding receptions. After hearing this however, I thought.... hold on a second, this is pretty good.
I DIDN'T MEAN TO TURN YOU ON - CHERRELLE
I must confess, although being a huge fan of the Minneapolis Sound, I don't think I was aware of this one at all.
I'm sure that all I was familiar with was the Robert Palmer version that came out a year later. After my very first listen, I could hear that it undoubtedly originated from the Twin Cities. After a few quick searches, I could see that it was written by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, from the original line up of the Prince produced Time.
My Meech senses have paid off once again!
17 DAYS - PRINCE & THE REVOLUTION
Rather astonishingly, not part of my earlier Prince show.
When you're talking about 1984 in terms of music, Prince enthusiasts automatically think of the Purple Rain soundtrack. Desperately trying not to make the obvious choice of including anything from that album, although selecting the b-side to When Doves Cry is probably just as predictable.
Completing my Minneapolis themed run of tracks with the mega hit from this Soul legend covering an early Prince tune.
COMPUTER AGE (PUSH THE BUTTON) - NEWCLEUS
Switching up genres now, but still sounding very much of the time.
EGYPT EPYPT - THE EGYPTIAN LOVER
Continuing in the Electro groove.
This was destined for my 1984 project at a fairly early stage, and slotting here makes perfect sense.
BREAKIN' THERES NO STOPPING US - OLLIE & JERRY
There is no shortage of films that could also have been recognized from that glorious year. I've already mentioned Purple Rain above, and I didn't want to include anything from Footloose, so we have this rounding off the first 'side'.
The inclusion of an obligatory Depeche Mode tune echoing my very first travel cassettes for the car.
As above.
Time for a dramatic turn towards a more Alternative/Goth sound
This may have escaped the final cut of my Alternative 80's themed TIME IS A FLAT CIRCLE, but more than happy to be featuring on a dedicated year specific show.
You could probably apply exactly the same statement again!
DEAR PRUDENCE - SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES
Always a big fan of anything related to my very favourite album by The Beatles.
Arguably, my very favourite album by anyone, depending on which kind of mood I'm in.
COUNTRY DEATH SONG - VIOLENT FEMMES
I don't know too much about the Violent Femmes, only in my library thanks to a file being passed to me by a former colleague called Steve Peach.
Yes, that is a real person!
On the strength of this, I think I'll be investigating further, depending on which kind of mood I'm in.
THE KILLING MOON - ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN
I mistakenly thought that I remembered this being used in The Lost Boys ('87), but after the usual checks, it turns out that it was a missed opportunity of epic proportions. Every time I hear this I automatically think of that film,
and not Donnie Darko ('01), the film it was featured in.
HEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeelp! Where have the last 20 years gone?
I know that The Lost Boys is even older, but that was deep in 80's territory, and definitely WAS a long time ago.
This song however, is from the golden year of 1984, so it's place here has been cemented forever.
FOR THE LOVE OF BIG BROTHER - EURYTHMICS
1984
I was really keen to include something by either Roxy Music or Bryan Ferry, but couldn't find anything that was released in 1984.
Fortunately, this was featured in a film that came out that year, Thief Of Hearts.
I really don't remember if I knew about this film or not, I suspect not.
I've never even heard of the main cast, and there's nothing really to say about it other than it features Norm from Cheers, and David Curuso, who has appeared in just about everything that Kevin Bacon missed out on.
