BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE MADE AWARE WHEN FUTURE PROJECTS BECOME AVAILABLE,
THEN PLEASE
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS
NOT A MONEY MAKING EXERCISE
IT HAS BEEN DONE PURELY FOR
THE LOVE OF MUSIC
AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST
Originally situated in the final third, I've moved this up to open so that it wouldn't get overlooked. The underlying message works really well at the beginning, and sets the tone perfectly.
Continuing with the British Goth Rock feel.
LIKE LEILA KHALED SAID - THE TEARDROP EXPLODES
The sight of Julian Cope climbing all over his bespoke microphone stand/barstool on Top Of The Pops has always stuck in my mind for some reason?
This reminds me of Inspiral Carpets,
so following on from the track before would have worked perfectly, if I'd not had a very late change of thinking and removed the original Stone Roses opener.
That was technically a product of the 80's, but stood out rather jarringly from everything else on here.
This is technically a product of the 70's, but works very well here.
It was the stand out track for me that I remember from Control ('07),
the Ian Curtis biopic.
YOUR HAUNTED HEAD - CONCRETE BLONDE
This sounds very much like something that would have featured on MEECH'S MIAMI VICE 4. However, I've just checked, and it doesn't even appear in my holding playlist.
Then I'm not really sure how it found its way here?
When I get more free time,
I'll have to investigate if it was used on the tv series at all.🤣
MOUNTAIN SONG - JANE'S ADDICTION
Here we have the distinctive Perry Farrell vocal, along with the familiar driving bass that seems to be compulsory on the majority of these selections.
LOVE LIKE BLOOD - KILLING JOKE
I've always been intrigued by the name of this band ever since learning about the backstory of Alex Paterson, and I did buy a couple of their singles that featured remixes by The Orb.
GIVE ME BACK MY NAME - TALKING HEADS
This set wouldn't be complete without at least one avante-garde offering from the mind of David Byrne.
Neither would it be complete without John Cale popping up.
Maybe not as essential, but I would always associate the two acts together in terms of the avant-garde. The placing of the two together makes perfect and logical sense.
This was originally identified for inclusion on THE 80's CALLING planetmeech. During the process of putting it together, I quickly realised that I had two very different shows on my hands.
I separated out all the more esoteric offerings, and ended up with the backbone of this mix.
This track, and the title is probably a subconcious tip of the hat to HEAVY PC.
I didn't have the slightest idea what this refered to, so I executed a very quick search on the Internet. I'm very pleased to learn that it is a drink made from porridge oats, whisky and honey. Fortunately, these are all essential ingredients that I managed to stock up on well before the lockdown.
Mmmmm... athol brose!
I feel that the powerful and distinctive vocal talent of this lead singer helped define the next decade. The opportunity for me to include anything that features the unique voice of Miss Guðmundsdóttir on this project was absolutely essential!
DOMINION - THE SISTERS OF MERCY
What I am about to share, sounds very outlandish, and borders on the insane...
I actually bought this 12" on the day of release from Woolworths!
I will fully understand if you don't believe me, I'm not entirely sure I believe it myself???
*I'm just noting this fact because it was completely different to my usual buying practise of purely Michael Jackson/Prince.
KINGS OF THE WILD FRONTIER - ADAM & THE ANTS
At the very beginning of this process, I'd included four different tracks by Adam & The Ants. I've managed to whittle them down though to just this.
I was lucky enough to finally get to experience the live show a few years ago, after being a confirmed fan from a very early age (one of my first ever records).
The show was outstanding, and this track was a particular highlight.
The crowd also took well to this, and continued to sing the main chorus long after the song had finished. Quite tribal, and very much like being at a football match.
PETROL (COUNTRY & WESTERN 1984) - SEVERED HEADS
I'm not even sure that this is from the 80's, but it does have that undeniable sound.
I've needed to execute a couple of nifty edits here and there to help me fit the run time.
Unless you are a world leading expert on the output of Mute (Dan Ashton), then hopefully it wouldn't curtail your enjoyment too much.
GOLF TREK - GAYE BYKERS ON ACID
My good friend from college, and fellow adventurer on many journeys, Mr Paul Skinner first introduced me to the wonders of this band.
That wasn't until the 90's, but quite pleased to be able to include them here on this alternative take on the 80's.
I had hoped to be attending a live performance with HEAVY PC, later in the summer. But all activities of that nature now seem like a distant fantasy.
PABLO PICASSO - THE MODERN LOVERS
I'm not entirely sure how this ended up here, but I'm certainly glad that it now forms a vital role in this selection.
As above, and I'm reminded in a very big way of The Fall.
I'm looking forward, and extremely exited about the prospect of converting the rest of my 90's journey tapes, as they featured the odd track by that very band..
THE SHADOW OF LOVE - THE DAMNED
It's now time to move fully into the Post Punk/Goth territory I've been hinting at all along.
PHOBIA - FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM
I think these guys are quite capable of delivering some scary shit!
GREEN FINGERS - SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES
It would have been ideal if I could reunite Siouxsie and John in the running order, but I prefer this final sequence of tracks.
This was my early close out number, but I ended up with a few minutes to fill, and had to do a bit of rearranging.
THE ORDER OF DEATH - PUBLIC IMAGE Ltd.
It is probably for the best that I'm constantly tinkering with the running order.
I'm fortunate that I discarded earlier drafts, as I'm very pleased to be closing out with this, now.
