WELCOME TO THE PLEASUREDOME - FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD

I'm fairly certain that Relax was my first real 7", and I also went on to buy the Two Tribes 12". An easy decision for me then to open with this.

(I think I probably asked my Mum to get them for me though).

BAD - MICHAEL JACKSON

I've wanted to make a loop of the Bad intro for a while now.

I'm sure that I acquired this 12" as soon as it was released, so another very important record of the eighties for me, and the entire world!

ONCE IN A LIFETIME - TALKING HEADS

I think this epitomizes the typical 80's music video. I'm just reviewing it again on YouTube to make sure, I have to watch it though with no sound because I'm currently listening to Pull Up To The Bumper - truly a surreal experience! One that I'd highly recommend if you have the time.🤣

This also reminds me of a mix by Theo Keating (Wiseguys) that hardly ever left the car stereo.

RAPTURE - BLONDIE

I consider this to be the most important record of all time

Quite a statement, but I'll explain....

Apologies, if you're already are of this, but it manages to incorporate elements of several music genres, Post Punk, Rock, Disco & Hip Hop.

Run DMC & Aerosmith get the credit for kick-starting the rise of Hip Hop into becoming the worlds most lucrative money spinner in the music industry, but I would say this record deservers that accolade. Not only released a few years earlier, it attempted to appeal to a broader fan base.

IT TAKES TWO - ROB BASE & DJ EZ ROCK

I think I was probably a little too old for the School Disco when this record was released, but I definitely remember it being played at the Martine's under 18's night.

ME MYSELF AND I - DE LA SOUL

As above. This also ticks several boxes with me because of the Not Just Knee Deep sample, featuring on my George Clinton tribute PLANETMEECH FUNKADELIC.

BEAT DIS - BOMB THE BASS

Transitioning from Hip Hop of the era to more of a Dance feel.

PUMP UP THE JAM - TECHNOTRONIC

Continuing with the current Hip Hop/Dance trend. I remember this being in the Pop charts for a very long time, or is that a false memory?

THEME FROM S'EXPRESS - S'EXPRESS

DJ Pierre/Phuture gets credited for introducing Acid House to the world, and Steve 'Silk' Hurley is my earliest memory of it, but S'Express helped cement it in the mainstream. The samples used here are tremendous, highlighting Mark Moore's love of Disco.

LOVE MISSILE F1-11 - SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK

Could this have come from any other decade? Quite unique.

I wonder how the world would have developed, if Sigue Sigue Sputnik released music in the..............60's?

WASHING MACHINE - MR. FINGERS

Our good friend at the time, Deshmillion, would often surprise us by producing music that was new to our ears. I can credit him with introducing us to The Jesus And Mary Chain, although, we didn't take the bait until quite a few years later.

On one occasion, he produced a tape by Mr. Fingers. It was like nothing else we'd heard up until that point, and has stuck in my mind ever since, even with my patchy memory.

ARE 'FRIENDS' ELECTRIC - TUBEWAY ARMY & GARY NUMAN

Another memory that has managed to remain intact, thankfully I can still recall seeing Gary Numan perform this on Top Of The Pops. I was very impressed by his deadpan delivery and stage persona. I decided at the time, from that point on I would be a Gary Numan fan. For some reason, I never gave it a second thought, and moved on to Adam Ant immediately. I think Gary Numan did ok without my following him, so not the end of the world.

I don't think technically this should be contained on an 80's mix, but for the reasons I've just mentioned, it's impossible not to include here.

BLUE BELL KNOLL - COCTEAU TWINS

I can't get this out of my head at the moment, and I realise that it probably stands apart from everything else on here. I've separated all the more esoteric tracks from my original playlist, for use on more of an Alternative future show. However, I felt this shared the Synth/Electronic tone of this section, and would follow on quite well from Tubeway Army.

EMINENCE FRONT - THE WHO

Admit it, you were expecting Phil Collins from that intro!

This featured on an episode of the decades quintessential Cop Show, and my very favourite of all time (I know Twin Peaks also features cops, but can't quite be as easily categorized).

THE SPACE BETWEEN - ROXY MUSIC

Slotting in a bit of Bryan Ferry for my Mum, in the hope she forgives me for applying 80's robot faces to a school portrait of her children.

PULL UP TO THE BUMBER - GRACE JONES

I'm sure this was played at the school disco.

I'm including this because I still really like Grace Jones, and she was definitely the scariest of all the Bond Girls.

You've got to feel sorry for the elderly, frail Roger Moore when they inevitably get down to business.

I CAN'T GO FOR THAT (NO CAN DO) - DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES

I would hear this every day on my very first part-time job, played over the low quality speakers, and also welcome the use as part of the De La Soul release.

An obvious choice also for reflecting the spirit of that period.

LET'S DANCE - DAVID BOWIE

This needs no explanation!

BACK AND FORTH - CAMEO

I've been trying to get this in ever since working on my MEECH-TANG CLAN show, as it was sampled towards the end of Gravel Pit.

Word Up was one of my favourite songs of the decade, and led to me buying this 12". I don't think Back And Forth made such a lasting impression on me, but using it to close out here does echo my thoughts on this project - expect more to follow...
