THIS IS NOT A MONEY MAKING EXERCISE

IT HAS BEEN DONE PURELY FOR

THE LOVE OF MUSIC

AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST

BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS

I'M THE BIZ MARKIE - BIZ MARKIE

Its starting to seem like I've developed a mild case of The Medusa Touch....

A few weeks prior to the lock-down, I selected Moonraker and Mad Max to watch completely at random. This turned out to be spookily appropriate when comparing to the current situation that is affecting us all.

I'm guessing this sounds like a tall story, but there may only be one person who reads this, and I've already told him via text anyway.

If that were not strange enough, we then learned the shocking news that Andrew Weatherall had sadly passed away well before his time. This was just as I was putting the finishing touches to a couple of my Weatherall specific shows.

The real earth shattering (to me anyway) news that I've just learned while I'm literally writing this shit down...Denise Johnson, who I featured on last weeks show, ROCKY 5 has died....tonight!

As if all of this was not reason enough for me to seriously question just how the universe seems to be working at present, it turns out that Biz Markie is currently seriously ill in hospital.

Lets hope that the reports are not as serious as they sound, and Mr Markie makes a full recovery.

As my favourite spy novelist once wrote in his book that featured gold, 'Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, and a third time is..........The Medusa Touch'.

Sorry, I changed the last few words, but you get what I mean.

If you really don't know what on earth I'm going on about, please click the

 The Medusa Touch link.

*All this without mentioning Tony Allen (DIRE STRAITS R YANKS) or Bill Withers (MEECH'S DISCO MAGIC 4).

**I know its just all a set of coincidences.............but holy crap!!!

DOIN' OUR OWN DANG - JUNGLE BROTHERS

This features Monie Love, one of the first British rappers to be signed and distributed worldwide, who I've just found out is the Sister of........................Dave Angel.

Not the Eco Warrior from the Fast Show, played by Simon Day, but the Techno DJ, who I have been following for many years - cosmic!

BROOKLYN - MC LYTE

Notice that just under 10% of these tracks have exactly the same title, just over if you include Crooklyn.

MC Lyte was performing in Camden fairly recently, but everything was just starting to unravel and I missed it.

NBA ALLSTARS - ULTRAMAGNETIC MC'S

I bought this record on my first visit to New York, and the cover photo is from the same visit. I really can't remember if the photo was taken on the same day as the purchase, but it could have been??

I do remember walking from Mid-Town to get to The World Trade Centre, so would have probably passed more than one record store.

I'm including this in response to the outstanding documentary on Netflix, The Last Dance. The Chicago Bulls do technically play in the Eastern Conference, so could just about relate to this show, but the Ultramagnetics are most definitely from The Bronx, so we have a confirmed link!

KRS ONE ATTACKS - KRS ONE

This particular track is without any definitive lyrical direction, more of a statement of intent.

MAMA SAID KNOCK YOU OUT - LL COOL J

This was always intended to be included, but was left out of the final mix. It was only drafted in at a very late stage to replace a Masta Ace track that stood out as sounding too similar to the Hip Hop from the opposite coast.

MOVE SOMETHIN' - TALIB KWELI

This is memorable for featuring in Dave Chappelle's Block Party, and coming to my attention at the same time as me being compelled to purchase anything on Rawcus Records......Get ready, this link will eventually take you to MEECH'S RAWCUS 4!

IT'S MY THING - EPMD

Eric & Parish making a return since last practising their Microphone Medicine on DIRE STRAITS R YANKS.

PUNKS JUMP UP TO GET BEAT DOWN - BRAND NUBIAN

I've tried switching up the running order by placing the next 45 minutes at the beginning, but I'm feeling that this is not the best choice to open with?

I was a bit worried about the following few tracks getting lost towards the end of the mix.

I'LL BE (FEAT. JAY Z) - FOXY BROWN

I wonder if Mrs. Carter gets a little bit prickly whenever this gets played in her presence?

BLOW YOUR MIND - REDMAN

Heavily influenced by the P-Funk sound.......That's given me an idea...

FAKIN' THE FUNK - MAIN SOURCE

I'm not sure if they are?

B SIDE WINS AGAIN - PUBLIC ENEMY

This track has always jumped out at me for making reference to the 'Superior B Side', a line also used on their guest appearance with George Clinton, featured on last weeks ROCKY 5 show.

CHECK IT OUT (FEAT. MARY J BLIGE) - GRAND PUBA

Always good to interject the mix with a lady who can really sing.

ONCE AGAIN (HERE TO KICK ONE FOR YOU) - HANDSOME BOY MODELLING SCHOOL

This track is fantastic!

GETTIN' UP - Q-TIP

Always good to interject the mix with the distinctive Q-Tip, so good in fact, that we're not quite finished yet...

I KNOW YOU GOT SOUL - ERIC B. & RAKIM

Whenever I hear this, I automatically want to start listening to James Brown's Funky People, and whenever I hear that, I want to play this straight after.

ALL GLOCKS DOWN - HEATHER B

I think this may be a female Hip Hop equivalent of The Decimals anti war song.....Don't Use Guns?

BROOKLYN - MOS DEF

Another artist that featured in Dave Chappelle's Block Party, who is also associated with Rawcus Records. I also like it whenever Yasiin Bey crops up unexpectedly in a (non music) film that I'm watching at the cinema.

RED AND GOLD (FEAT. KING GHIDRAH) - MF DOOM

I've relied on both of these acts already separately, I expect the whole world appreciates that I've managed to bring them together for this special event.🤣

CROOKLYN (FEAT. BUCK SHOT, SPECIAL ED & MASTA ACE) - CROOKLYN DODGERS

I've probably listened to this track much more than anything else on here. I vaguely remember it playing out over The Soul Train line-up, but can't recall where I saw it. Maybe it was at the end of the Spike Lee joint of the same name? I'll have to dig it out and report back with confirmation.

BUGGGIN' OUT - A TRIBE CALLED QUEST

(see above, I did warn you).

THE WHAT - THE NOTOROUS B.I.G. & METHODMAN

I didn't manage to fit anything in by the Wu-Tang, but this should cover it. Christopher Wallace on the other hand would probably be the first artist at the top of any list of East Coast rappers, so his inclusion was essential!
