IT HAS BEEN DONE PURELY FOR

THE LOVE OF MUSIC

AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST

UPSIDE DOWN (WITH SANDRA AKANKE ISIDORE) - FELA KUTI & AFRICA 70

Kicking things off with the titans of Afrobeat.

A slightly longer running time than the majority of my selections, but I have trimmed it down a touch, only a touch though. To take too much away from this would risk going against the reason I selected it in the first place.

BOOGIE ON - ROB

I had initially earmarked the title track from the Funky Rob Way album, but I always find the use of the word Funk or Funky in a song of that genre extremely off putting. I would also apply that to any type of music, the most obvious examples being anything with Rap or Rock in the title.

365 IS MY NUMBER/THE MESSAGE - KING SUNNY ADE

King Sunny Ade is the undisputed king of ju-ju music, the dance-inspiring hybrid of western pop and traditional music of Nigeria.

This could be a nod to what Grandmaster Flash was doing around the same time (1982), or vice-versa. I'm unable to detect any similarity, so I suspect not, but that could be down to my un-trained musical ear?

CONGOMAN - THE CONGOS

Not quite as crisp sounding as everything else used here, but not to be overlooked.

NO ACCOMMODATION FOR LAGOS - TONY ALLEN & AFRICA 70

Ever since my listening habits had been revolutionised by the introduction of the iPod many years ago, I became obsessed with filling the capacity of each subsequent model. This encouraged my appreciation of World Music and Afrobeat in particular. Therefore, I jumped at the chance to see Tony Allen at the Jazz Cafe a few years back who was performing with Amp Fiddler. The latter ended up taking over the whole show and I was deprived of listening to any Afrobeat at all!

AFRICA CENTRE OF THE WORLD (FEAT. ROY AYERS) - FELA KUTI

An absolutely incredible piece of music that I've used at the pivot point of the whole project. The addition of another Fela Kuti track is fully justified by this featuring the Jazz/Funk legend Roy Ayers treating us once more to his skills on the vibraphone.

*This one is going in my Best Of Show.

AFRODISCO BEAT - TONY ALLEN & AFRICA 70

As I've included two by Fela Kuti, I may as well even things up.

AFRICAN FUNK SOUL - FUNK & QUOT

I'm not too sure if the link takes you to purchase this exact track or not? Unfortunately, this has been part of the mix for a while now, and has mysteriously vanished from my library. Fortunately, I'm still able to identify it as this, but any digital link has either been mis-labelled, or deleted.

I hope you'll agree that it is well worth keeping in the show though.

WILD SAFARI - BARRABAS

I included a track by Barrabas on my very first digital compilation NO LEGS 90.

I may have inadvertently included this by mistake, assuming it to be of African origin, but is fact actually Spanish?

If you trace the shifting tectonic plates back far enough, you'll see that before the current recognised continents, Europe and Africa were both part of the  larger Pangea land mass.

This is all a bit of nonsense, as you can trace all music back to Africa anyway.

AFROPUSHERMAN - C. ANOT, DOCTOR L, JP DARY, J KELLNER

No doubting the origin of this piece.

DANKASA - UPPERS INTERNATIONAL

Another track that could quite easily be utilised at the end of one of my

STANDARD/NON STANDARD shows.
