IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE MADE AWARE WHEN FUTURE PROJECTS BECOME AVAILABLE,
THEN PLEASE
THIS IS NOT A MONEY MAKING EXERCISE
IT HAS BEEN DONE PURELY FOR
THE LOVE OF MUSIC
AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST
BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS
FLYING MACHINE (THE CHASE) - WAR
Get ready for a bit of Acid Funk to ease us in.
I love War and initially tried to fit in The World Is A Ghetto, but couldn't get it to flow.
This is probably the only out and out record to feature in a film, but everything else used here manages to pull off the effect I'm going for, so would not be out of place when we're talking Blaxploitation.
I think this is a fairly recent record that's adopting a nostalgic tone.
I'd hoped to put this together without using anything with Funk or Funky in the song title - screw it!
SOUL DYNAMITE - THE SOUND STYLISTICS
Adds pace and energy that you would expect, so three tracks in is where it sits.
Welcome back Eddie Harris, I don't think we're finished yet...
I came across this when selecting music for a space themed project. I mistakenly assumed that it referred to extra terrestrial activity on the strength of the record sleeve. Fits in rather well with all this now, and does not feel spacey at all.
HIGH HEEL SNEAKERS - ROLAND KIRK
There's only one person I think of when you mention high heel sneakers, and he was wearing them the last time i saw him perform.
I think this has got to be the smoothest man currently working in show business today. Certainly the most polished performer that I've seen recently anyway.
HOUSE OF THE RISING FUNK - AFRIQUE
Everyone should recognise this break...
WIGGLE WAGGLE - HERBIE HANCOCK
As above, by demand.
Like virtually everything else used here, not actually featured on a film soundtrack as far as I know. Added instantly though to this collection as it ties in so well with the overall feel.
Of course, this has nothing to do with the film of the same name. I actually tracked it down though on the strength of the title, and Kool Keith mentioning it way before in the Ultramagnetic MC's.
Unfortunately, I can't provide the usual Apple or even Discogs link, I hope the above works for you.
IT'S ECSTASY WHEN YOU LAY DOWN NEXT TO ME - BARRY WHITE
Time to pull out the 'Big Guns' (not forgetting Keith & Herbie).
I've already used the original of this to kick off the b-side to my first ever compilation, -18 WIMBLEDON 91 90. I'd hoped to use this here in the same way, but executed a last minute switch with The Big Man, and here we are.
I've lost count of how many versions of this song I have by different artists.
I had selected at the start to use at least one other track by Billy Paul, but the song I'd earmarked did actually already appear on a Blaxploitation compilation, and I wanted to avoid using anything like that.
When I tried looking for something of his a little less well known, I came across this. I'll probably end up using different versions of this in the future, maybe...
Welcome back Barrabas, featuring on my very first digital mix, now on my twentieth - enough of a gap I think?
Another record I came across while searching for possible music to use on The Space theme. Linking with that project would have been a bit of a stretch, but fits in rather well here.
SARAMINA - DANIEL JANIN & JEAN CLAUDE PIERRIC
Squeezing in a little bit of 70's French soul,
I think I can hear strings used here reminiscent of the above Barry White tune.
TOMORROWS TIME - JOE MARCINKIEVICZ
A welcome change of pace now, but not forgetting where it's all heading.
CLAP YOUR HANDS - FREDDIE HUBBARD
Bringing us back - Freddie Hubbard style!
SOME SKUNK FUNK - BILLY COBHAM
A bit of craziness now to round everything off.
I'LL PLAY THE BLUES FOR YOU (pts.1&2) - ALBERT KING
Hopefully, you'll recognise the opening few seconds.
Sampled wisely to create the break used by Deckwrecka for The Return and featuring in my first 'old/new' show -01 90 MINUTE BREAKsDOWN.
This would be playing out over the closing titles of my imaginary Meechsploitation picture.
