ANYTHING YOU WANT - DELTA LADY
My Christmas Eve journey tape is the only compilation that I no longer own, I have a theory that it was still in my car when it was sent to the scrap yard?
It was created with a specific journey in mind, which just happened to be Christmas Eve. As a consequence, you will not find any outright festive songs included on this project.
Any similarity to actual seasonal activity, past, present, or future is purely coincidental.
You'll have to agree that this high energy dance track is perfect for opening such a mix. This also marks a broadening in my listening habits around that time.
More lightweight Dance fodder, I really can't remember how or why this was cropping up in my car at the time?
HERE COMES THE WAR - NEW MODEL ARMY
This already appears on IAN BOTHAM'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB, the fourth show by my very good friend and co compilator HEAVY PC. It's well worth including it again, and to remove it from this show would completely tear up the fabric of reality as we know it.
Talking of tearing up the fabric of reality...
In the past, I have been known to alter the track listing of my very early compilations, to update them for listening in the 21st century. The perfect example of this would be the removal of 'THREE' INXS tracks from the same album!
Fortunately, these two Sonic Youth tracks are from different periods, and I associate both of them very much with this mix. 'Cross The Breeze would also be one of the very first tracks to feature on any plans for a 'Best Of' show that I could work on when I run out of ideas.
The original journey tape included a song that was recorded from their Peel Session. Unfortunately, as already mentioned, this tape has probably been destroyed.
This track gives a fair representation of the kind of offering that you'd expect to hear from Senser, and is a suitable replacement.
As mentioned in my notes for PLANET ORB 2000+, I included this because
it was an unknown Orb track at the time that I recorded from The John Peel Show. I had crudely marked it down as simply Yo Chuck, because it contained a sample of Flavor Flav calling out the name 'Chuck'.
Incidentally, PLANET ORB 2000+ is my least popular show, so can I please appeal to your kindly nature over this season of goodwill and urge you to check this out.

Probably the only Christmas reference I can think of...
Maybe 'Open Up' (on the 'b' side) as well???
This'll make sure you're paying attention!
GöTTERDEMERUNG (TWIGHLIGHT OF THE GODS) - BERLIN PHILHARMONIC
Nothing like a bit of Wagner at Christmas. I have to confess that I've subbed this in to replace an extremely popular Classical excerpt from my favourite ballet.
Unfortunately, Alan Sugar has now ruined that for us by using it for his dire reality show.
This very short segment is one of my favourite parts of the entire 17+ hours of The Ring Cycle.
I've read in many different WW2 biographies, that this was playing in 'The Bunker' during the final days.
Not very cheery then? But quite good at setting up a bit of atmosphere.
You may recognise that this piece was used by John Boorman for Excalibur ('81), so has been popular with me for a very long time, being a big fan of that film as well.
2000 LIGHT YEARS FROM HOME - THE ROLLING STONES
Nothing like a bit of Sgt Pepper inspired Stones, this being particularly good for road travel on a very dark night.
As alluded to above, this could relate to the Christmas theme, but only at a stretch.
Rather surprisingly, this is the one and only Charlatans song to feature anywhere on any of my listening devices or hard drives. The fact it appears at all is because of this digital mix, and had not been present until I started work here!
I suppose there are just some things you can't explain?
Why is David Hasselhof so big in Germany?
I think this was the last occasion that I'd incorporated a Prince song in one of my mixed genre journey tapes. I guess that I'd assumed that not all of the people travelling in my car would be that familiar with this killer b-side, and would be grateful of the exposure to this extreme ElectroFunk workout?
I still remember hiring the Godfather part III soundtrack from the library upstairs at the Swan Centre in Eastleigh.
I included this to add to the already diverse selection, and to bolster the Christmas feel (probably more by coincidence though, as I've never really understood Christmas, and get confused by everybody losing their minds every year?).
'CROSS THE BREEZE - SONIC YOUTH
As covered above, this is also one of my very favourite Sonic Youth tracks.
Whenever I hear this on it's own now, I'm always reminded of this particular journey/journey tape.
THE NIGHTINGALE - JULEE CRUISE
Three things were very important to me around this period of the 90's, Twin Peaks, Sonic Youth and The Orb. This track from the Angelo Badelementi soundtrack was one of the more gentler numbers, and would help with the overall feel.
On paper, the sequencing here looks a little suspect, but in reality works with almost near perfection.
I failed to keep up with the musical output after this album for some reason?
The albums of the late 80's and early 90's were very popular with me at the time, and they would provide the musical backdrop to many journeys as a cyclist/passenger & driver.
I know, I have plenty to get up to speed with, when I get the chance...
Another track recorded from The John Peel show, I think we'll be hearing more from this rich source in the future...
