BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS
I think I bought Therapy’s early CD’s on the basis of one 5 star review in one of the music magazines of the early 90s – either Vox or Select. They went on to be a bit generic for my tastes but this early stuff is raw and primal and I don’t think it really sounds like anything else I’ve ever heard. Obviously the sample from Goodfella’s is an added bonus on this track. I think, originally, this was on the Glastonbury Christmas Eve Compilation.
LENNY AND TERRENCE - CARTER USM
This is another track from the Christmas compilation – I love this whinge about Lenny Kravitz and Terrence Trent-Darby even though I have no particular issues with either of them personally. This is one of Carter’s heavier tracks and I really like the heavy drum machine percussion. Still think they were a cracking band from the early 90s and I listen to their stuff a lot.
Another track from the Christmas Eve tape – struggling to think of anything further to say about it other than it's just really good. Bandulu will always remind me of a particular Orb all-nighter at Brixton Academy…
WHY AM I STILL DANCING? - XC-NN
I had a thing about this curious little band. I was first introduced to them on the Mark Goodier Evening Session on Radio 1. This was a B-side and I like the Hal samples.
This track came free on a mix tape in Select magazine which was my favourite magazine of the 90s. I always feel a bit sorry for the call centre worker (if it’s all real). Jonny L is just ripping the piss out of her work but come on Jonny L…she’s got to eat man!
JAILBIRD (DUST BROTHERS REMIX) - PRIMAL SCREAM
A B-side remix but what a banger. This introduced me to the Chemical Brothers (or it might have been a St Etienne remix but I think it was this). I think this is an absolute classic.
ALIENS IN THE WOOD - L.S. DIEZAL
One I heard late at night on the John Peel show – I don’t think it fits in particularly well with the rest of the music on this mix but it was the only opportunity I was going to get it in somewhere.
I remember sitting in the car at Fleming Park getting blazed and listening to this track. I can’t remember what compilation it was on but it was definitely on one.
This is the B-side to Rhubarb and Custard and it’s way better than that! This was obviously used at the start of ‘NOW I HAVE A MACHINE GUN’ and it was well worthy of getting a full outing
I still listen to NIN a lot. Not so keen on the later stuff but The Downward Spiral is a classic. I think this was used on my ‘Damon Hill’ compilation.
Another one from the ‘Damon Hill’ tape and the only non-90s track on the mix. My dad used to play this album a lot so the tracks have stuck with me. I think it’s cool and I don’t usually get Neil Young.
HERE COMES THE WAR - NEW MODEL ARMY
Waaaaaaaar!
One of my favourite musical memories of the 90s was watching Nirvana at the MTV awards playing Lithium. I wanted to add it to this mix but it wouldn’t really work. Therefore I added this track because it was definitely on an old compilation and probably one of the last ones we did.
Find it hard to listen to Oasis these days; they just get on my tits! However, I will always enjoy this and most of the Definitely Maybe stuff.
Bought this in the bargain bin at Pinpoint – classic
TOWER OF STRENGTH (ZEN ACOUSTIC MIX) - THE MISSION
I have a lot of time for 80s/90s goth these days – some of the music is superb. This is a great stoner track.
Another from John Peel and my first introduction to the genius of the Tindersticks.
