SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT - BLUE MODE

This is a great funky version of the pop grunge classic that I discovered by listening to the Craig Charles Funk & Soul show. It’s not readily available so unlikely to be chosen for the soft mix. Actually, I had no plans to have this on the mix at all – I was doing some exploratory work on Audacity and was practicing overlaying tracks – I thought it worked well against the opening  montage so kept it in – I’m calling that improv!

WEB - THE OH SEES

These are my favourite jobbing band on the planet. Led by the indomitable John Dwyer, Thee Oh Sees are on album 22 and are the leading lights of the San Francisco psyche scene. This track comes from the album Mutilator Defeated At Last which is well worth checking out as an introduction to this truly great band.

HERE IT COMES AGAIN - THE AMAZING SNAKEHEADS

Good rough old Scottish band who released one album and then imploded without releasing another thing. Dirty basslines and riffs and screeching lyrics in a Scottish accent – filth.

PROBLEM CHILD - HEN OGLEDD

A 2018 number sung by the Geordie folk singer Richard Dawson. I really like the groove and the lyrics are fun.

SCORPION IN THEIR MOUTHS - DYLAN CARSON

Another 2018 number, this is one I heard Tom Ravenscroft play back in the spring. I like the one man and his axe vibe and there is a sense of doom about the piece.

CROWN - RUN THE JEWELS FEAT. DIANNE COFFEE

It’s no exaggeration to say that Run The Jewels 2 by Run The Jewels is up there amongst my favourite albums of the 21st Century. The two rappers complement each other so well and the rhymes are superb.

RINGASD EL MAGAD No.2 - ANNA ADAMIS & GABOR PRESSER

60s Hungarian Psyche anyone? I like the initial drum solo and the gospel vibe.

CURTAIN - MARDEN HILL

I like the Pearl & Dean feel about this track and fits in well with the Psyche suite of this mix – the segue into the next track was more by luck than design.

THE JOURNEY TO SERRA DE ESTRELLA - THE PHENOMENAL HANDCLAP BAND

One album – technically excellent band and an awesome groove.

I WON'T HURT YOU - THE WEST COAST POP ART EXPERIMENT

My favourite film of 2018 is Isle of Dogs – this tune features and works so well. Also, coincidentally, once covered by Thee Oh Sees.

LANDING PARTY - MICHAEL GIACCHINO

Lost is my favourite EVER show – it may not be the best by a long way but it is my favourite. The show is scored amazingly well by Michael Giacchino and this piece is used sporadically to up the emotional stakes – absolutely superb composer.

FLYING GOLEM - WAND

Another band from the Californian psyche scene and contemporaries of Thee Oh Sees. This was the stand out track on their first album and is very mix-friendly.

JESUS BLOOD NEVER FAILED ME YET - GAVIN BRYERS & TOM WAITS

Big fan of Tom Waits and this piece is disconcerting.

STAGGER LEE - NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS

Everybody remembers the first time they heard Stagger Lee? From the excellent mid 90s Bad Seeds album Murder Ballads. The story telling here is first class and the music is immense.

HAN-TYUMI, THE CONFUSED CYBORG - KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD

Australian psyche band who released five albums during 2017. This was from the best one - a concept album about a giant cyborg who wants to vomit and die like a human.

POLLEN - THE BLIND SHAKE

More contemporaries of Thee Oh Sees – good 60s surfy vibes over a punk track.

BIRTHDAYS AND FUNERALS - ORNETTE COLEMAN

Introduced to me by Squarepusher (not personally). More people should be aware of this jazz man’s work.  I like the way this sounds like it could be from a Ray Harryhausen film.

QUOTH - POLYGON WINDOW

Furious beats from Aphex Twin and the only real piece of IDM in the whole guitar-heavy set.

POURSUITE - POPERA COSMIC

A French psyche classic from the 60s, recently reissued on Finders Keepers Records

SPACE TO BAKERSFIELD - BLACK MOUNTAIN

I got into Black Mountain a good decade ago. They rarely release stuff but when they do it is always excellent. They are not ashamed to wear their 70s rock influences on their sleeves.

FAIRWAY TO HEAVEN - GAYE BYKERS ON ACID

“…as I approach the crucial 13th hole…”
