PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS

NOT A MONEY MAKING EXERCISE

IT HAS BEEN DONE PURELY FOR

THE LOVE OF MUSIC

AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST

BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS

GUITAMBIENCE - PYREX DETOX

I first heard this on the John Peel show well before I moved to London and loved it immediately. Unfortunately, the music compilation aspect of my life took a back seat around this time, so I didn't get to use it on any current travel cassettes.

However, the actual 12" did come to my attention again during one of my routine retail expeditions to Berwick Street.

COMMINAGETCHA - PROPELLERHEADS

Just about the whole world, myself included, seemed to be swept along by the current hysteria built up by the Bond franchise. I remember that quite a few of the artists I was listening to were either actively employed by this money making machine, or cannily jumping on the bandwagon. This track is in no way directly linked, but does sound heavily inspired by the world of cinematic espionage.

The Propellerheads were involved with the soundtrack to

Tomorrow Never Dies, and their current output included collaborations with David Arnold and Shirley Bassey....No need to say any more than that then?

FALLING ELEVATORS - MC 900 FT. JESUS

I'm not very keen these days to include anything that has been used in television advertising, but I guess in 2000, I would have been more open to incorporate easily accessible music in my selections.

I did suggest that the Decimals perform Should I Stay Or Should I Go in their live set, so I was already open to associate myself with music used to sell jeans.

Listening to this now reminds me of the sort of experimental spoken word music that David Lynch has dabbled with.

DIESEL POWER - THE PRODIGY

I've never been the biggest fan of The Prodigy, but hearing Kool Keith made me take notice, I guess that was the point.

GIVE THE DRUMMER SOME - ULTRAMAGNETIC MC'S

I absolutely love the intricate production of this track!

When originally putting this together, I thought using this to follow Diesel Power made perfect sense. But listening in digital quality today, really does highlight the passing of years in the vocal performance of Mr Thornton.

I KNOW YOU GOT SOUL - BOBBY BYRD

From James Brown's Funky People Vol.1, I'd attributed this to James Brown in my original notes. The digital transfer from CD all those years ago didn't pick up all the individual artists, so my iTunes library had been giving me false information ever since.

Obviously, listening to it now you can hear that its one of his Funky People and not The Godfather Of Soul.

Get ready! This has given me an idea for MEECH'S FUNKY PEOPLE.

FREDDIE'S DEAD - CURTIS MAYFIELD

One of the premium tracks from THE Premium Blaxploitation soundtrack.

SAMPANS - LALO SCHIFRIN

What you get when you fuse Blaxploitation with Kung Fu, and add the world's coolest film composer.

It's a real shame that I had not been able to digitally transfer this compilation until now. I would have been on cloud nine to have been listening to this when I was on a similar sampan trip in Victoria Harbour about twenty years ago.

Sadly, Hong Kong seems to be a very different place today, so cannot envisage a return trip any time soon.

(I don't think we can travel anywhere at the moment anyway).

Oh, get ready for THE LALO SCHIFRIN TAPES.

WE TOOK PELHAM - DEADLY AVENGER

When I used to spin this record I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever heard!

Needless to say that it did get whipped out for use very frequently.

I've since been dismayed to hear it being used as the walk out music by Sheffield United, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear it in a tv advert at some stage either☹️

If you ever get the chance to see the actual label on the record, you'll see quite an amusing picture of a classic Stormtrooper with an early eighties Page Three lady.

THE TRUTH - JEDI KNIGHTS

I'm sure that once upon a time, probably influenced by the good people of Eat Static and The Orb, that I used to be quite open to the idea of extra terrestrial life.

It could be that I've now lived more than twice as long as I had twenty years ago, and am a touch more world weary and cynical. But I now realise that there probably is life in whatever form elsewhere in the universe, but because of the vastness of space, there is almost zero chance of any civilised life communicating with anything else before they ultimately die out.

*Expect contact in the next few days then to prove me wrong, and to nicely round off the craziness of the past year.

WATER BOOGIE - ORGANIC AUDIO

Bringing us back to reality with my first purchase on Tummy Touch, get ready for  MEECH'S TUMMY TOUCH 4, not quite as advanced as my other projects, but the artwork is pretty much ready.

6 MILLION DOLLAR MAN - LONDON FUNK ALLSTARS

Ninja Tune releases were a priority to me around twenty years ago, as evidenced by MEECH'S NINJA CUTS 4

PECKINGS - BALLISTIC BROTHERS

I think this was included on a Live At The Social mix by John Carter, but was already on my radar due to The London Hooligan Soul album.

KRONKITE - THE CREATORS

As the 20th century drew to a close, Wall Of Sound must have sensed that the interest in the Big Beat formula was starting to wane.  In a move to adjust with the listening/purchasing habits at the time, two imprint labels were introduced, Bad Magic that focused on Hip Hop, and We Love You, that catered for everything else.

SCRATCHY NOISE - THE HERBALISER

More Ninja cuts.

WALK LIKE A PANTHER - ALL SEEING I

What a strange record?

I'm not sure it's aged that well, but I did rather like it a lot all those years ago.

BEFORE THE FALL - JADELL

Part of the Illicit/Ultimate Dilemma group of releases that I favoured after picking up the first Battlecreek e.p.

Click the link and you may also see the Stormtrooper with the 80's lady.

6 UNDERGROUND - SNEAKER PIMPS

Quite a special record that I think I remember being quite popular amongst my contemporaries of the day. Made all the more poignant with the clever use of the John Barry sample, next time you watch Goldfinger, prepare yourself for the Shirley Eton gold reveal in the Fontainebleau hotel.

ISOBEL - BJöRK

The calibre of this song sounds very much like something you'd expect to hear open a Bond film. I'm astonished that Björk has not been approached yet to record any of the officially recognised Bond themes, let's hope that changes in the future. I really wouldn't mind if she was contracted to record music for the next five films consecutively.

*I do have something up my sleeve though for my forthcoming Bond project (whenever we get a sensible release date).

ONE NIGHT STAND - THE ALOOF

I remember picking this up when all the new releases of the week were priced very favourably in all the large format record stores. This led to many spur of the moment purchases because we all love to grab a bargain don't we.

This aside, I'm sure that I gravitated towards The Aloof because of the Sabres Of Paradise connection.

AFTER SEX - THE STAPLES SINGERS

After the last 80+ minutes of sonic pleasure, it's time for a smoke.
