THEN PLEASE
THIS IS NOT A MONEY MAKING EXERCISE
IT HAS BEEN DONE PURELY FOR
THE LOVE OF MUSIC
AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST
BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS
This was my very first experience of Hardfloor. I had a recording from The John Peel Show, and didn't even manage to catch the beginning. Thankfully, I would go on to collect many more wonderful records by the masters of the 303. You may notice that I've executed a nifty little remix, overlaying the bridge sections with the familair crescendo of Acid & Beats. This was to replicate as closely as I could, the original excerpt contained on the actual journey tape.
A token offering from the masters of tripped out guitar craziness.
Unmistakably them, and without equal, as far as I know...
Apart from the festival/gig based music of the early nineties, and the 'educational' stuff on The John Peel Show, I was exposed to quite a bit of 'rave' by my peers. This being particularly popular within our group of friends and acquaintances.
I even managed to capture the original intro from the cassette, but needed to improve the sound quality considerably. Unfortunately, I think it does not quite hold with all the other digital content, but to leave it off would have been unforgivable.
MARS THE BRINGER OF WAR - BERLIN PHILHARMONIC
I need to be careful what I say here, because Hans Zimmer works around the corner from me on occasion..
Well, this reminds me in a very big way of the opening battle of Gladiator.🤔
REVERENCE - THE JESUS & MARY CHAIN
Whenever I heard this in the car, I was always very pleased with the flow between tracks. I'm not so sure that I'm as pleased when listening to the digital versions? Maybe I need to start driving again?
No need to worry, I'll warn everyone before I do!
I was messing around with a guitar segment of this to help with the transition from Reverence. What I ended up with was the loop used at the very beginning and end of the mix. I did originally use a remix of Blue Room by The Orb, but cannot source that anywhere. Having Depeche Mode provide the intro, ties in with my very first compilation WIMBLEDON 91 90.
Whenever I hear this, it takes me right back to a collection of very fond memories that I'm fortunate to still have of my early motoring life.
FISHIN' FOR RELIGION - ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT
I was desperate to link these two very different tracks together because of the similar drum patterns.
An example of the accessible Hip Hop that was around at the time.
BULLET IN THE HEAD - RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE
Whenever I hear this, it takes me right back to a collection of very fond memories that I'm fortunate to still have of crazy nights spent at The Eastleigh Tavern with Marc Alfonso. I think that Monday's used to be a Rock/HeavyRock/Metal/Grunge/Industrrial type thing????
I also remember seeing this act on television for the first time, and thinking - yes, that's for me!
This relative supergroup of talent was created after the break up of Gaye Bykers On Acid. A 'must have' for any serious connoisseur of the very fine work of G.B.O.A.
A DEEPER LOVE - CLAVILLES & COLE
I think I must have included this to show off my diverse musical tastes at the time?
WEATHER EXPERIENCE - THE PRODIGY
Incredible!
The Prodigy showing us that they can do a Rave version of a Pink Floyd style track.
This one is dedicated to all my friends that used to like dancing at the weekends!
I really don't remember the (202) in the title of this track?
I think I may have just had a taped cassette version of the album at the time, and written it down as simply Pacific, unaware of the different mixes and various titles.
I probably preferred this version all along anyway?
PERPETUAL DAWN (SOLAR YOUTH MIX) - THE ORB
I really love Perpetual Dawn, but tended not to listen to this version very often, preferring to listen to the complete albums. Adding this here, would mean that I give it the attention it deserves.
These two tracks go together exceedingly well, and this will be my first and only use of a UB40 track.
I had originaly used two tracks by Led Zeppelin on the cassette version of this mix. But now that I have access to absolutely millions upon millions of songs, there really is no excuse for me to use two songs by the same artists on the same set.
*This beat Kashmir in the edit, as it was less of an obvious choice.
Time to clear the air and everything else with this noisy little screamer of a track.
RAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Using it here all those years ago prevented me from utilising it on the recent SONIC MEECH.
AFTER SUCK THERE'S BLOW - GAYE BYKERS ON ACID
I know that I've already featured Mary, but not technically as the same act.
I think I remember watching a live performance of this at the end of their Drill Your Own Hole mini film. Which I still have a copy of on VHS, but sadly the device needed to play it on has long since gone.
I've just found it on YouTube!!
I'm in heaven now, being reunited after all these years.
AFTER SUCK THERE'S BLOW - GAYE BYKERS ON ACID
(Click the link to share in the fun).
It looks as though it was filmed in the old Camden Palace, now Koko, which I go to regularly. Now my mind is well and truly blown!!
I'm sure that this also featured regularly at the above mentioned
Rock/Heavy Rock/Metal/Grunge/Industrial and Rage Against The Machine night at The Eastleigh Tavern? I may need help on this Af(f)?
Love them or loathe them, I think the majority of people fall into the latter camp now, U2 can always provide something very atmospheric here and there. This being the perfect example, and rounding things off in the same way.
