THE LOVE OF MUSIC

BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS
90'S FIA INTRO
For whatever reason, this only existed on 1 side of a cassette, and ultimately was only 45 minutes long!
I remember the tape very well, and what we have here is reconstructed around the core of that, plus what I've managed to retrieve from my old John Peel tapes from the same period (1994).
I've always labelled this track as 'Kurt Cobain Is Dead'.
Listening to The John Peel Show was vital to the advancement in my musical education. However, the show was aired at a critical time that clashed with two key nights in a young persons life (Friday/Saturday).
I devised a rather clever way of capturing 90 minutes from each show, ready for me to play in my car over the next week.
*This was playing as the death of Kurt Cobain was announced!
SPACE ODDITY - ROCKABYE BABY!/DAVID BOWIE
My original compilation contained just the David Bowie original. But by accident, I included this version while putting together this mix. So, in the true David Lynch way of working, it stays!
The David Bowie recording cuts in at my absolute favourite part of the song.
You know the sound...quite difficult for me to describe, not having a musical background, but it sounds like the horn of a very large sea going vessel?
According to the current no.1 source of information, this is labelled as Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, and Proto Punk.👍
I've not had any feedback on why this was missing from my Beatles show?
That would have been my very first question, but I can only assume that that there is something far more important happening in the world at the moment.
One of the strongest cuts from an album of very strong cuts, and probably my favourite Paul McCartney vocal of all!
Crazy - I can see why it would make a delusional hippie want to incite a 'race war' (NOT).
A typical piece of Electronica from 1994, I was drawn to this by it sharing a title with a Jimi Hendrix staple.
These two tracks already complimented each other quite well. But in 2020, thanks to my current bit of kit, sound as though they are now inseparable!
Paying respect to my Cornish heritage.
SHAOLIN BUDDHA FINGER - DEPTH CHARGE
Paying respect to my love of the Beats!
J Saul Kane first came to my attention by way of a similar themed journey tape that was constructed by Dan Ashton.
As a result, I started collecting everything I could lay my hands on, by any of his various aliases as soon as I moved to London (J Saul Kane, not Dan Ashton, but you knew that?).
I still have a copy of Dan's Journey tape, and would love to replicate it for this website as soon as I can get his approval...
I'll be reaching out via Twitter very soon, and I'll be reminding him that I could do with a dedicated Mute playlist as well.
*I think Depth Charge were doing this sort of thing even before The Wu-Tang.
John Peel himself would have been very chuffed to have lined these two up together.
BLASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE - BOOTSY COLLIN'S NEW RUBBER BAND
There's a theme running through this, and the theme is very reliant on an instrument with just four strings!
From the bass heavy Dub of Zion Train, into this next double header with two icons of the bass.
*This doesn't fit the template of what would normally get played on my favourite radio show at that time, and there is no possible way that John Peel could have known about my very specific love for the Funk - The universe really does like to keep us on our toes.
WITHIN YOU WITHOUT YOU - JAH WOBBLE & KEITH LEVENE
I really like to be reminded of a bit of Jah Wobble, never been entirely sure about his vocals though, probably better suited to a knees-up?
I have to confess, this wasn't actually part of the original journey tape at all, but absolutely integral now!
WHATCHA GONNA DO - LOVE T.K.O.
The clues were all there...
I'm quite pleased to see that this sort of thing was being played by my favourite DJ, many years before my (major) Major Force record buying bonanza.
Major Force releases were a priority to me around twenty years ago, as evidenced by MEECH'S MAJOR FORCE 4.
THE POWER OF PUSSY - BONGWATER
I'm quite pleased to see that this sort of thing was also being played by my favourite DJ, but I'll have to admit that I've never been encouraged further to buy anything by the mighty Bongwater.
JULIET'S FUNERAL - LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
A very short segment from everyone's favourite ballet.
In my younger days, I really didn't know a great deal about Classical composers.
Of course, I knew about the one used in Apocalype Now, and I'd heard of Mozart and Tchaikovsky. For some reason, probably laziness, I simply wrote this down as Tchaikovsky, even though I owned the CD, and should have clearly known that it was written by Prokoviev????
This ties in with my intro, the two were synonymous with my Sunday afternoon fortnightly viewing. I've cut out the obvious part though to keep the listener on their toes.
A good bit of Disco inspired 70's Stones.
However, I first came across this by an unexpected route.
As well as being extremely appreciative of the early music by The Rolling Stones, I was also a confirmed Prince aficionado.
I first heard a live version of this recorded by Prince on a bootleg that was recorded in London during the 1986 Parade Tour, with a guest appearance by Ronnie Wood.
Obviously, this had always made me take particular notice whenever I would hear the original.
THE KILLING OF GEORGIE - ROD STEWART
I really can't explain how this found its way on to one of my compilations, but this current run of tracks work exceedingly well together.
WHO ARE THE BRAIN POLICE? - MOTHERS OF INVENTION
There should be another track here by The Brain Police. Mr Peel, was very chuffed with himself for pairing the two tracks together. Unfortunately, I've needed to cull the track mentioned, because the only recording I could find was of such bad quality, it would make an absolute mockery of all the current technology we have at our disposal.
John Peel always liked a bit of Shellac, I think I know why.
SOUL LIMBO - BOOKER T & THE M.G.'S
I'm pretty sure that I recorded this from the television for one of my early compilation tapes. Thankfully, I can now use the full version here.
Cricket has always been very popular in my family, going back three generations!
But for reasons unknown, I never, ever gave it any consideration?
That is, until.........
The Cricket World Cup of 2019, something just clicked, and I couldn't get enough.
I was already glued to every single session of every game, and then came
THE FINAL!
Just my luck, finding a new interest, and now it's been completely snatched away.
Also, another link up to the BBC sport themes touched upon above.
THE HELICOPTER TUNE - DEEP BLUE
This is remembered fondly from my car, and whenever Mr. Hansford would take control of the music.
I actually used that exact Martin Sheen sample from Apocalypse Now on the original tape. But I've embellished it further by 'underlaying' music from the film throughout the first part of the track.
SHE'S BREAKING UP - BITING BACK
I love being reminded of the television that I used to watch as a kid.
I have another record that features samples from The Six Million Dollar Man, but that will have to wait until MEECH'S NINJA CUTS 4.
Shazam proved very unreliable for me when it came to identifying this track, I had simply written it down as Generic Hardfloor Style Acid. Fortunately, I had already recorded it elsewhere with the correct identification. But I think my original name is an appropriate description for this...
Another gem to be unearthed from the my archive of John Peel treasures.
The final track from an album that I still hold in very high esteem.
