BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS
Not nearly as old as some of the other Heavy-Weights on here.
I did consider, and was really keen to put together a dedicated Ronin Records mix, but my collection is far too sparse to offer up a complete 90 minute show.
WARM IT UP, KANE - BIG DADDY KANE
After the countdown, comes the warm up. Judging by some of his covers, this Urban Soul Crooner would appear to be quite popular with the ladies.
LIVIN' IN THE JUNGLE - SCHOOLLY D
I'm not sure that Schoolly D had ever been taken to the heart of the true Hip-Hop aficionado's, well certainly not if you were to believe the brief write up attached to his Apple Music profile. However, I have fond memories of a Mekon collaboration on a Wall Of Sound 12" that is still part of my record collection.
Rather surprisingly, this is the very first track from Illmatic that I've featured on any of my shows. After constantly being advised on Twitter, almost on a daily basis, about just how important this album was, I thought I'd better address the situation.
I SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE IT - SLICK RICK
Probably the most well known wearer of an eye patch in the Hip-Hop community.
Thanks to Slick, I would feel more comfortable wearing an eye patch. But it was not a simple style decision for me, my eyes were actually screwed.
Despite this track sounding upbeat and party-like in the true Yo! MTV Raps vein, it conveys quite an upsetting undertone with a very negative outcome.
STRAIGHT FROM THE GROUND - FLOW DYNAMICS
Replacing a similar track from the same album that I used on PLΔN=TM==CH ΔUDIOMMXXI. Although, I really couldn't remember how it came into my ownership.
After a very tiny bit of research, I can see that the album also contains a track by Paul Eve of The Wiseguys and Bronx Dogs, so there is my answer.
EYE ON THE GOLD CHAIN - UGLY DUCKLING
The link up in my head of these two works out to a very logical conclusion, and the switch between tracks is also very pleasing on the ear.
Back to a more traditional offering from Mr. Rap. This features in, and appears on the Soundtrack album for Colors ('88). Probably my favourite fim set amongst the street crime of LA, introduced to me by my old pal Mr Karl Hansford MIDDERHONZ, that certainly left quite a lasting impression.
G.U.R.U. - MARCO POLO (FEAT. TALIB KWELI & DJ PREMIER)
Not to be confused with DJ Polo. However, I do seem to be getting a little confused myself with all these very similar sounding monikers. I may as well re-brand myself as Kool Moe Meech to add further to the Konfusion.
QUESTIONS - ORGANIZED KONFUSION
Better believe your ears baby!
If you listen carefully, you'll here mention of a chap called Pharoahe. That certainly got my Meech senses tingling...... I needed to carry out a bit of digging, and it turns out that it is none other than Pharoahe Monch, so all is good in the world.
One from the original Original Gangster.
Another appearance after linking up with Redman on my FUNKADELIC EVOLUTION show.
The title track from this Clan member's début solo release.
ANOTHER VICTORY - BIG DADDY KANE
I've just checked the running order of The Wiseguys essential mix from 1997 that I was certain this was part of, but no sign of it. I could have sworn it featured, maybe they just used the break to weave other similar stuff together?
One of the websites that I checked did spell his name incorrectly, so I could always give the mix another going over, which wouldn't be that much of a chore.
Redman sounding suspiciously like Cypress Hill.🤔
I guess there are no rules about sampling people who also sample?
This has set me on a course to rediscovering the delights of early 90's weed inspired Hip-Hop.
RETURN OF THE FUNKY MAN - LORD FINESSE
You know what he's sayin'....
(ANOTHER) ANOTHER WORLD - THE CREATORS (FEAT. BLACK STAR)
Another high quality convergence that I'm sure the universe has delivered just for my listening pleasure. The Creators coming to my attention via Wall Of Sound, featuring Black Star, who are Talib Kweli and Mos Def.......from the Rawkus family.
BENEATH THE SURFACE - GZA (FEAT. KILLAH PRIEST)
One more track from another Clan member, and judging by the cover, may have been identified for using on a science fiction/space themed project. But slides into this mix quite comfortably.
BEYOND THE WORLD - JUNGLE BROTHERS
These guys also have a tenous Wall Of Sound connection, but much more than enough to get me on-board.
Ha! I've just read somewhere that Method Man is in the group Method Man and Redman, no mention of the Wu-Tang Clan at all??
CRIME PAYS - DJ POLO & KOOL G RAP
Now I'm really confused.
Still confused, not by the similar sounding rap handles, but confused at why have I waited so long to include this in a show???????
LONG KISS GOODNIGHT - THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G.
Slotting in to signal the show is coming to the conclusion.
Not much that I can say about Christopher Wallace that has not already been said. But it is trully criminal that the Netflix documentary BIGGIE : I GOT A STORY TO TELL is still sat in my Netflix list of unwatched titles.
THE BREAKDOWN - PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS (FEAT. HEADNODIC)
Introduced to me as Hip-Hop celebrating the act of getting down and having a good time, as opposed to the usual posturing about guns/drugs/money/ladies.
