COMPARED TO WHAT - JERRY JONES
The link will take you to a fairly awful quality recording, so I've needed to source a slightly better version for the benefit of this show.
This song is fast becoming my equivalent of Teenage Kicks...
We all know of John Peel's love of the most played Undertones track. Well, I'm very close to using Compared To What (in many different guises) almost as many times. I'll have to count up all the different versions I've used over the last year+, I'm not quite finished yet either...
*I don't think there is any specific reason for me to continue this, but I can't seem to resist it now, so I may as well keep going?
THUNDERSTORM - THE ABYSSINIANS
HEAVY PC, my fellow producer of compilation gold, should be pleased to see this act making an appearance after first featuring on his miraculous AN ALMOST RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE show. Unfortunately, the age and quality of this track is also a little suspect, so placing it at the beginning should help with the switch to the crisper sounding stuff.
SOUND BOY MASSACRE - KING TUBBY
Getting my King Tubby entry in fairly early. I first came across the work of this icon of the genre by being a serious listener to John Peel in the 90's.
I would categorise King Tubby along with James Brown and George Clinton as being Godfather's in their respective musical fields.
This is NOT to be confused with the walk out music at Stamford Bridge, but does sound very similar.
BAD MAN SKANK - YABBY YOU & THE AGGROVATORS
Another artist that came to my attention by way of listening to everyone's favourite bearded DJ from Liverpool. Yabby You featured fairly recently on one of my journey tape recreations, HURRICANE ANNIE.
I believe The Aggrovators were an ever changing line-up of session musicians, much like The Upsetters and The Prophets.
What's Going On here then?
I don't know about Fancy Pants, sounds suspiciously like Marvin Gaye to me?
What better way to cover this track than with a wurlitzer style bit of organ magic?
UNIVERSAL DUB - J BOOGIE'S DUBTRONIC SCIENCE
A quick departure here from all the traditional Jamaican Dub.
I've only just found out that this could be referred to as 'Synthetic Dub'.
It pulled the wool over my eyes, and I'm quite pleased that it did. I'm certain that I would have overlooked it had I have known its true origin....Happy Accident?
Dr Alex Patterson was obviously listening to this when he recorded his first album. The album that irrevocably changed our lives for the better.
DELIVER ME FROM YOUR ENEMIES - YABBY YOU
I was fortunate to visit Jamaica many years ago, long before travel bans and global pandemics. In my naivety, I expected everyone to be listening to King Tubby, Yabby You and Lee Scatch Perry. Unfortunately, the hotel that we were staying in played nothing but Bob Marley's Greatest Hits on a 24 hour loop for the whole week!
In my wisdom, I thought it would be a good idea to ask a cab driver to take us to a local club where we could enjoy authentic Dub/Reggae.
Looking back, our driver must have thought we were on a suicide mission to leave the security of our hotel. Thankfully, for our safety, he took us to a popular nightspot frequented by tourists. As soon as we entered though, we were greeted by the sounds of....................Bob Marley's Greatest Hits.
VICE VANITY - SLY & ROBBIE FEATURING BEANS & HAWKMAN
During my days spent collecting records on the Pussy Foot label, I came across a remix album of Sly & Robbie by Howie B! I'm just reacquainting myself with it now, and its incredible! Nothing really suitable for this project though, but plenty of Down-tempo, Deep Hypnotic stuff for a future Down-tempo, Deep Hypnotic show.
I'm still listening to it now.......and it really is very good.
Drum & Bass Strip To The Bone By Howie B, if you can track it down, not sure that you'll get a digital version though.
“You have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero”
BROOKLYN STYLE - OSSIE ALL STARS
I'm not sure what relationship Gregory Isaacs has with the Ossie All Stars, but I think I like it. I'm guessing that Mr Isaacs is the Selector.
SUBAQUATIC SWERVES - TRADITION
I hope there is no need for me to apologise for including two tracks by Tradition from the same album.....I think you'll know why I did though...
BLACK PANTA - LEE "SCRATCH' PERRY
Rather confusingly, this also goes by the name of Blackboard Jungle Dub (ver.1)
I think I've heard this track far more than anything else on here. I remember it clearly from being used to open a Justin Robertson show from 1994 that I used to play to death in my car. I've also heard this in many pre show DJ sets at gigs and festivals. It also crops up as a sample on the above mentioned album by The Orb.
I was desperate to include this, but managed to avoid opening with it, placing it at the mid point works for me.
I've just remembered the the Massive Attack remix album by Mad Professor, I'll have to give that a little dust off now.
If you've not yet managed to so far, now's the time to start Skanking.
This is just the sort of track that would be essential for closing out one of my mixed genre Standard/Non Standard shows.
GARGANTUA DEL DIABLO - ZION TRAIN
Another regular contributer to the John Peel radio show, and a good example of spaced out Dub for the spaced out Dub enthusiasts.
Placing these two acts together makes perfect sense, I'm sure that they may have been on the same bill somewhere to back this up.
The Dubcreator creating a more contemporary sounding Dub.
SMOKING HIGH - MAD PROFESSOR & GUADI
Gaudi made an appearance on Abolition Of the Royal Familiar, the most recent release by The Orb. Another album I intend listening to after I finish these notes. I think it will jump right to the head of the queue though - and quite rightly so.
KING TUBBY'S YARDIE DUB - KING TUBBY & SCIENTIST
Managing to squeeze in another entry by King Tubby to help fulfil his Godfather duties.
SHAKE THE NATION - PRINCE FAR I
Helping everything wind down now as we approach the end.
(I AM THE) CONQUEROR - DENNIS BROWN
More recommended wind down music.
I think I came across this as I was searching for possible tracks to go on one of my space themed projects. The music doesn't really lend itself to a project of that nature at all, and the artwork is very strange.
MAN FROM SHOOTERS HILL - THE SOUL SYNDICATE
I originally had a very low key final track that ended everything with a whimper.
You'll agree that this is far from low key.
I was drawn to this by my time spent living in Greenwich, which is near Shooters Hill.
But as I suspected, there is also a Shooters Hill just outside Kingston, Jamaica.
