CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND '77 (OPENING)
One of my favourite opening scenes of any movie…ever. It just comes across as being properly real. Thought it would be good to mash it up with…
IN THE HOUSE - IN A HEARTBEAT - JOHN MURPHY
The tune was recently used by planetmeech in his ever-so excellent show MEECHADEMIC. The problem that it is so dramatic that it adds tension to everything it’s put to. Therefore, I am not sorry.
THE TOMORROW PEOPLE - DUDLEY SIMPSON
I have a vague memory of enjoying this show when I was very young. The 70s is a halcyon time for sci-fi despite the often shonky effects. The storytelling was great, and there was always a lot of shouting!
WHITE RABBIT - EMILíANA TORRINI
I quite enjoyed this film when I first saw it, but I have attempted to re-watch a few times and just found it slow and tedious. I expect cinema quality sound made up for the murky storyline and whilst I quite like Zak Snyder’s aesthetics there is something questionable about his approach to storytelling that I can’t put my finger on. Anyway, I like this take on the 60s psyche rock classic.
I like it when vintage tunes are used in sci-fi. I’d never heard this Sinatra tune until I watched the very excellent Blade Runner sequel.
SUFFOCATION - GEOFF BARROW & BEN SALISBURY
Very good sci-fi series shown on the BBC in early 2020. Geoff Barrow is something of an underrated genius who should be given a Star Wars movie to score but, of course, never will be.
Best show of 2019 and Damon Lindelof always delivers with his choice of music..
Aiens sample - Tension!!!
I’ve never seen the movie but I have always enjoyed the soundtrack. Kind of like the mix of IDM and orchestral.
I was blown away by District 9 when I first saw the “fucking prawns”. I have added this tune to acknowledge the movie more than anything.
LOVE WILL KEEP US TOGETHER - TENNILLE AND CAPTAIN
It was this or Olivia Newton John with Xanadu. This won on a toss of a coin. I can’t do a sci-fi show without acknowledging the greatest TV show in all of history.
Akira sample - Tension!!!.
DOLL'S POLYPHONY - GEINOH YAMASHIROGUMI
Akira would be in my top 5 all time sci-fi movies. I think planetmeech may have introduced it to me. The dolls scene has always slightly freaked me out. The soundtrack to this movie is superb - simply nothing else like it exists.
I always like a ‘folk on a mission’ movie and I also like the way this movie properly weirds out at the end. Essentially this is more Geoff Barrow who should score a Star Wars movie but, of course, never will.
Sapphire & Steel sample - More mad 70's sci-fi.
IS SHE WITH YOU? - HANS ZIMMER & JUNKIE XL
(BATMAN V SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN)
Don’t mind BvS but Wonder Women is a great super hero movie. The scenes where she liberates a town from the Germans by crossing no mans to this score is utterly fantastic.
MOONAGE DAYDREAM - DAVID BOWIE
The best Marvel movie? Maybe the second best. Anyway, you can’t do a sci-fi show without having a proper alien singer on it.
War of the Worlds Clip - prefer Richard Burton but I really needed to reference the 50's.
LEAVE YOU FAR BEHIND - LUNATIC CALM
I could have chosen any track from this soundtrack - they’re all good.
THEME FROM V THE SERIES - DANIEL CAINE ORCHESTRA
I think planetmeech and I both share an appreciation of 80s stalwart ‘V’. A world without Ham Tyler and Mike Donovan is a poorer world
OK, the best Marvel movie and one of the best Zeps.
“Nero’s hit…I’m going in after him”
BLAKE'S 7 (MAIN THEME) - DUDLEY SIMPSON
I watched Blake’s 7 again on Youtube and I still like it. Paul Darrow as Avon is one fine character. Perhaps I like this because of the characters as Villa and Servalan are also very memorable. Most memorable though is this splendid theme.
YOU COULD BE MINE - GUNS 'N' ROSES
(TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY '91)
Sounds a bit dated this, but GnR’s finest moment in my opinion. Arnie is a good Terminator but Dion Smith is the finest Terminator.
ARENA FIGHT - MARK MOTHERSBURGH
I don’t think any MCU movie has nailed it’s soundtrack yet. Sure, Guardians uses lots of good tunes but I’m talking about the actual score. This film almost nails it.
NEUTRON DANCE - THE POINTER SISTERS
I could have used Dustin and his girlfriend singing Never-ending Story - but no. This wins because its a banger.
DEHOMINISATION (1) - ALAIN GORAGUER
This comes from an obscure French animated sci-fi whereby the soundtrack has developed its own cult following. It really is very good. Never seen the movie.
TAPER JEAN GIRL - KINGS OF LEON
I like Cloverfield and I liked Kings of Leon before they decided they wanted to be a two-bit stadium rock act.
DUEL OF THE FATES - JOHN WILLIAMS
(STAR WARS; EPISODE I THE PHANTOM MENACE)
What a piece of music?
