BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS
LOOKING AFTER LIFE ON MARS - ISOTOPE 217
Just the type of thing you'd expect to hear in an early afternoon slot at a festival. Probably appreciating the musicianship so much that you think it's the best thing you've ever experienced, then completely forgetting all about them after seeing the headliners and soaking up all the usual festival experiences.
Not the standard frenetic Electronica that normally opens a John Peel show, but there are plenty more projects in the pipeline to address that...
THE HITMAN (FEAT. CUTTY RANKS) - MARVELLOUS CAIN
Typical John Peel to throw in a bit of typical Jungle.
As the Ragga elements of the last track come to the surface, it's time to introduce the obligitory offering of Dub. Not exactly traditional Dub, but this type of British Electro/Dance Dub that was also a staple of the show.
SOOPER KOSMOS - THE ECSTASY OF SAINT THERESA
Sounding very North American, but according to my sources, actually from the Czech Rebulic. Those same sources have also suggested many different avenues of interesting 90's music that seemed to have escaped my attention up until now.
ENERGY SUCKER - LUSCIOUS JACKSON
Not quite the female equivalent of Rage Against The Machine, nor a grungier version of Portishead, maybe something inbetween?
WHAT A LIFE - JULIANA HATFIELD
90's Jangle Pop with a bit of additional grrrrrrr.
You need to be very careful when utilising the 'saxamaphone' in a non jazz setting, I'm not sure if this pulls it off, but at least we're a million miles from Kenny G territory.
ALMOST PERCEPTION - BETHANY CURVE
This is what you tune in for...
Being fully signed up for anything that Sonic Youth care to release, Rodan proved to be a very welcome discovery.
It must have seemed fairly strange to any of my passengers during my motoring years that I was listening to this type of thing in the car.
Thankfully, I still have the actual tapes to refer to, as even I am finding it a little strange now.
And yes, you've guessed correctly, the first half is drawing to a close.
Wake up! Side 2.
SLOW THRILLS - BOWERY ELECTRIC
From Dream-Pop to Drone-Rock, we've nailed that mid 90's compilation for the car.
I think I've always been a bit partial to the latter anyway. As the name would suggest, these are from one of the cooler parts of Manhatten.
Unusually, despite appearing on several of my journey cassettes, I never invested further in any of the Autocreation output.
(Another track from this album features on FRENTZEN'S JOHN PEEL 90).
Just the type of music that would have gone down extremely well with me all those years ago. I need to make up for this discrepancy by devoting some serious listening time to it right now!
Slotting into the Electronica sandwich quite comfortably.
INFLUX - HIGHER INTELIGENCE AGENCY
Unusually, despite these appearing on several of my projects as well, I never managed to invest further in any of the Higher Intelligence Agency output either.
*After dipping my toe in here and there, I can confirm that the Autocreation album has come out on top and is still playing...
THE DEAD FLAG BLUES - GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR
This tracks full run-time is over 16 minutes, but I've managed to edit it down for the purposes of my show. The complete track contains a spoken word section, that I'm sure John Peel played in it's entirety, purely because he WAS John Peel, and that was just the type of thing everybody would expect of him.
My original compilation contained several tracks recorded for their Peel Session, but I've included something entirely different that is not from that session at all,
because I AM Paul Meech, and this is my show!
