THIS IS NOT A MONEY MAKING EXERCISE

IT HAS BEEN DONE PURELY FOR

THE LOVE OF MUSIC

AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST

BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS

GIRL WITH THE CROOKED EYE - ROC

The John Peel Show was always my first introduction to any new music during the early to mid nineties. As well as compiling my standard journey tapes, I would also put together regular C90 cassettes of my favourite music. This would either fall into the up-tempo Electronic category (PLANETMEECH 94) for example, or literally anything else.

What we have here, is the latter.

I've changed the name though for marketing reasons.

Originally called Heinz-Harald Weird Stuff, I thought it best to capitalize on the John Peel legacy. It reads better on the front cover anyway.

This song is typical of the kind of music that would end up on these tapes.

44 ROBBERS - LAIKA

As above.

FOIL - AUTECHRE

These featured quite prominently from time to time on the radio, and prompted me to invest further, possibly at Pinpoint in Eastleigh. Although, I suspect it was probably one of the larger record stores in Southampton?

II PORNO STAR - SHELLAC

Adding a bit of variety, in keeping with The Master, who I believe was quite partial to a bit of Shellac.

COTTON CANDY - PRAM

The majority of this music is from either 94 or 95, so if you were in my car around that time, and we were not en route to an event, then you were probably listening to this.

YOUR HEAD - THE DEAD C

Maybe it's because I still remember the original tape, but these tracks fit together so well and replicate perfectly the type of music that John Peel was championing.

07 (NO TITLE) - HARRY PUSSY

Listening to the legendary DJ trying very hard not to mispronounce this act brought a smile to my face.

YOUR LAST FRIEND IN THIS TOWN - MOONSHAKE

Like most of the music included here, I think I'm going to come up with very interesting finds once I start to delve further into the back catalogue of the artists...

BILLY - FEEDTIME

Closing out the first 'side' with this intense burst of guitar action.

PROTOSKI - AUTOCREATION

Perfect timing for a piece of trademark Electronica.

PAINT IT BLACK (INSTRUMENTAL) - BAND OF SUSANS

It goes without saying that this would have been perfect for my Curry Madness projects, but I'm very happy to have included it here to add to the unique blend.

MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN - THIN WHITE ROPE

These two tracks fit together remarkably well.

My second non intentional Bond reference, I may as well take the opportunity now to tell you to get ready for the BOND NEVER DIES show. I'm hoping to tie that in with the release of the 25th official film next year.

*Incidentally, I came up with that title long before the official Bond 25 name was revealed.

It was probably always going to either include the words Gold or Die anyway.

Maybe I should get some legal advice?

NO CAN DO - CAVITY

This is a b-side sent in by an obscure record label from Boulder, Colorado. No Apple representation I'm afraid, and I'm very surprised to have found even the above link on You Tube. Especially after being bombarded with multiple videos of open mouths with varying degrees of tooth decay.

KETCH - MEXICAN POWER AUTHORITY

Another obscure b-side, but only very slightly easier to find on YouTube.

SPLIFF RIFF - THE HEADS

I can't think of anything less likely for an advanced session of marijuana appreciation?

FANTASY - MARIAH CAREY (FEAT.ODB)

I honestly can't explain how this got here, but it did!

I'm fairly certain that it didn't feature on The John Peel Show, but you just don't know?? Maybe it was a foreshadowing of my later appreciation of The Wu-Tang?

AUTOSLEEPER - GLOBO
Until I undertook the task of locating this digitally and converting into a show, I didn't know the exact title of the track, I'd always assumed that the main sample was 'Go To Sleepah'??

You may recognize another sample towards the end, Bill Paxton from ALIENS (86). I used to listen to this tape quite a bit in the car on my way to work, and have always wanted to quote the line "how do I get out of this chicken-shit outfit?" when it gets to my turn in any meeting.

AUTOSLEEPER - THE INSIDE/AUTOSLEEPER - JPHONO1

Now we have the truly weird occurrence of these final tracks.

I was left with roughly just enough space at the end, and they not only fit, but match up almost perfectly to everything else.

They feel very much like something you'd expect to hear on a 90's John Peel show, but in fact recorded not that long ago? Unless you are familiar with the work of The Inside or Jphono1, then without me revealing that they're not from the 90's, then I'm hoping you won't find the inclusion too jarring.

All having the same title helps with the John Peel theme - something that he would frequently like to do on his shows.

As mentioned at the beginning, I have many more of these tapes that could be converted. Depending on how well they're received, I hope to resurrect at least another couple before I'm done...
