Guess what film I'd just been watching?
If THE STRAIGHT STORY was David Lynch attempting to make his most un Lynchian picture, then LOST HIGHWAY was as if a film student were set the brief of creating a film in the craziest possible style of David Lynch...
He certainly achieved that!
It's also accompanied by an amazing soundtrack.
The Beats were still Big in Greenwich around the time I put this together.
I used to buy a fair amount of vinyl on the Wall Of Sound label, and this 12" was a non album track, so had to go in to the mix.
SCIURI SCIURA - BLONDE REDHEAD
I'd selected this independently of my past life.. or so I thought?
The guitar parts match quite well with the sampled guitar of the previous track.
Whilst going through my old cassettes of John Peel Shows, trying to put a name to an Acid thumper by Steve Stoll, I noticed that I had included this same track from all those years previously.
I still need to identify the Steve Stoll track by the way, Shazam has come up short this time
(if there are any Steve Stoll specialists reading this, please help?)
Hopefully, I'll be able to identify it in the next ten weeks or so...
More guitar based music from across the pond.
This will take you right back to the late 90's.
Also from across the pond, but I'm not really sure how you categorize Beck?
I've created my own genres in my iTunes library so I can quickly locate stuff, and Beck sits amongst others with Bjiörk, David Bowie and Depeche Mode.
Genre title - (???).
I really didn't know the name of this track until putting this digital version together. I'd taped it from a generic Funk compilation belonging to one of my housemates in Tooting.
Thanks to the power of the Internet, and the extensive use of the song title, I managed to add this to my functional playlist.
I also love hearing part of what made up Pump Up The Volume right at the end.
So many great tunes from this album, so many happy memories.
My earliest recollection, listening to Jenifa what seemed like every week at the under 18's night at Martines in Eastleigh - HA!
Thinking about it now has produced a huge smile.
As above.
Although, by the time I picked this up, I'd transferred the majority of my social activity to London.
The Beastie Boys have always provided a constant source of enjoyment for me for as long as they've been active. But around the turn of the millenium, I went particularly crazy, and was hell bent on collecting as many records as I could find.
MEISO - DJ KRUSH, BLACK THOUGHT & MALIK B
This was on a promo that was given to me during my extended hospital stay.
Needless to say, that the promo did the trick, and set me on a course to purchasing many, many further releases by Mo'Wax in the future.
FREAKIN' YOU - JUNGLE BROTHERS
Produced by Alex Gifford of Propellerheads, so ticking off two boxes for me.
I think the warm, comforting feel of the vinyl really stands out from the rest of the digital content here. Part of an album I picked up in Greenwich Market called Fly Films and Groovy Movies, you'll have to agree that this is both very fly and extremely groovy - expect more in the future...
MAY THE FUNK BE WITH YOU - JEDI KNIGHTS
If this is new to you and I have not shared it with you already, then we can all thank Mr. Skinner for introducing me to the Jedi Knights?
This track would set me on a course of many differing styles of Electronic music all navigated by Tom Middleton.
FIZZY IN MY MOUTH/YOUR MOUTH - HOWIE B
My current shows have not been reflecting just how much vinyl I picked up from Pussyfoot Records over the years, I hope to remedy this going forward.
I am so familiar with this record and have probably listened to it much more than everything else used here. I have the strange feeling though, it's already made an appearance on one of my digital shows as a result.
I feel as though I used to listen to this on repeat in my car, but that's not possible, because the technology didn't allow for that when I used to still drive.
If I have used it elsewhere, or use it again in the future, it won't be the end of the world as it is just so good.
WHEN BETTY COMES TO TOWN (PALM SKIN REMIX) - DADDYLONGLEGS
Another 12" I picked up when I used to head straight for the
Pussyfoot/Wall Of Sound section in the record store.
MISSION VENICE - NIGHTMARES ON WAX
Squeezing in a little slice of Nightmares On Wax - Don't tell my local Thai restuarant. 😄
PEOPLE GET UP AND DRIVE YOUR FUNKY SOUL - JAMES BROWN
I thought I was 'so fly' when I bought this soundtrack together with Black Ceasar in Greenwich Market. Of course, The Boss made it's way onto the original Earth Calling planetmeech.
It even found it's way onto the 74 minute Mini Disco 💽 re edit.
Unfortunately, whenever I hear it now, I'm instantly reminded of Vinnie Jones!
Therefore, it was essential that I replace it with an equally groovy tune from Slaughter's Big Rip-Off. Preferably something that didn't get reeled out all the time for use with tv advertising or the theme music for an ex-Wimbledon footballer in a Guy Richie film.
I thought it best to substitute the original for this version, as I've been using the odd Beatles record here and there over previous weeks. The Beatles version is probably the very coolest record that you'll ever hear, but The Supremes fit in really well with the current direction.
I listened to a fair bit of Hip Hop radio when I first moved to London, and this was used as the signiture tune to one of the shows.
I'M DERANGED (REPRISE) - DAVID BOWIE
As covered above.
Neither this, or the edit at the beginning are currently available (greyed out)
on the Lost Highway album with Apple Music.
Fortunately, I bought it fairly soon after watching the film, so it sits comfortably in my hard drive, and is now broadcasting to anyone who wants to listen.
