BABY WANTS TO RIDE - JAMIE PRINCIPLE

This compilation was a result of the enjoyment I had putting together WIMBLEDON '91 90. Rather than compile a completely new mix, I must have decided to improve on what had gone before. It wouldn't have been very likely anyway that I'd be able to produce anything new at all, other than a Prince mix. What we are left with is part remake, part sequel.

Hence, renaming it EVIL DEAD II, probably the best 'remake/sequel' of the time.

It seems really odd now that I'd even open with exactly the same track, but I did?

I'd gotten away from my fixation with The Doors,

only to lean heavily on David Bowie and The Rolling Stones.

Fortunately, I can now substitute the first track, as I think people would automatically switch off, thinking they had already heard this.

Time is precious in 2019!

The 7 inch of BABY WANTS TO RIDE was bought by my Mum around the time it used to get aired regularly on Radio 1 in the early eighties.

I naively used to identify this track with driving, so this seemed like the ideal situation for it's inclusion.

HARD TO HANDLE - THE BLACK CROWES

It's not difficult to guess why I included this when you know about my enthusiasm for the earlier Rolling Stones style.

SGT. PEPPERS LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (REPRISE) - THE BEATLES

I've mentioned previously about liking the use of a reprise stemming from listening to Beatles records as a kid. Here we have the perfect example, taking the form of its own track.

I really can't remember why I took the odd decision of using this towards the beginning, I'm sure there must have been a very specific reason, something I'm unable to unlock the mystery of today?

STAYIN' ALIVE - BEE GEES

The Bee Gees were also incredibly popular with me around the very early 90's, I could have picked virtually anything from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack or any of their earlier work, but went with the big draw in the end.

BABY YOU'RE A TRIP (INTRO) - JILL JONES

I desperately wanted to avoid using any out and out Prince tracks in my first compilations. However, I was really keen to use just this section of a song by a protégé. Although, listening again in 2019, I'm not entirely happy with it's use here. It has to be included though, to leave it out would go against the purpose of the recreation.

PEACE FROG - THE DOORS

Now, this really takes me back to the early 90's, the intro reminds me of Nirvana?

MOTHER NATURE'S SON - THE BEATLES

To make the transfer as complete as possible, I have been going through the original tapes to make sure I capture all the samples and edits that appeared before. Because of the deterioration of the cassette and the poor quality of the vinyl it was recorded from, this particular track sounds nearly unrecognisable. Paul McCartney's vocals are sped up and the background contains a fair amount of hiss, I do actually remember buying this album at a car boot sale, and even then, it was in a very poor state of decay.

UP FROM THE SKIES - THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE

I couldn't replace every track that was originally doubled up on the two mix tapes, and this fully deserves to appear on both.

DRESSED IN BLACK - DEPECHE MODE

Fortunately, I still have memories of listening to this on my personal stereo whilst being driven through Munich on the way to a family holiday in Austria. I was not too sure at the time of its correct name, so have referred to it ever since as Memories Of Munchen.

THIS SIDE OF LOVE - TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY

One more refugee from the first compilation, and probably deserves to be on every mix going forward!

MOTHERS TALK - TEARS FOR FEARS

This has been drafted in to replace one of the less popular duplicated tracks, and very feasible that it would have been used at the time. This album was very popular amongst our small group of friends. In hindsight, it really should have been there ahead of the multiple INXS tracks.

ANDY WARHOL - DAVID BOWIE

Andy walking, Andy tired, Andy take a little snooze🤣

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE - LOU REED

I'm almost certain that I wouldn't include this now, but I've left it in as it links to, and follows on really well from the previous track.

I DON'T KNOW WHY - THE ROLLING STONES

The perfect closer for the first side.

When I listened to my first draft on head phones, the mono recording of this really stood out. What I ended up doing, is probably not conventional, but I think it pulls it off remarkably well.

Keith, Mick, I'm available for a bit of remastering when I've finished my website!

ANGEL NO - YELLO

I came across this on a free cassette attached to a music magazine and included it to add something a bit different.

The perfect opener for the second side

HELLO, GOODBYE (REPRISE) - THE BEATLES

I really like this particular section of the song and can happily listen to just this, on it's own.

MOTHER'S LITTLE HELPER - THE ROLLING STONES

I used to listen to a lot of Rolling Stones around that time and owned the London Years box set. I do remember listening to this a fair bit on my equivalent of the walkman - a shoe box sized 'personal' stereo.

PERFORMANCE - HAPPY MONDAYS

This marks the transition for me from the 'traditional' to the 'unconventional'.

Following on from The Rolling Stones was probably not intentional, but more likely my subconscious way of matching up the two bands. Looking back at it now, it's fairly logical that I would have made the link because of the Nic Roag film.

THE STARS THAT PLAY WITH LAUGHING SAM'S DICE - THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE

I bought the album Smash Hits without knowing too much about Jimi. I wouldn't normally buy a compilation album of the same artist and probably haven't since!

Luckily for me that I did, as I didn't know at the time that this track did not feature on any of his regular albums.

Unfortunately, the digital copy really shows up the poor quality of the recording.

JULIA DREAM - PINK FLOYD

I've only just found out that this was a B-side?

I don't really remember which 'album' this appeared on at the time, other than HEAVY PC passing me a cassette of an early Pink Floyd record?

I CAN'T READ - TIN MACHINE

I couldn't get my hands on the Tin Machine album at the time and only had a recorded copy of Under The Gods from the television!

I do remember being taken on a family holiday to Yugoslavia and picking up a bootleg copy that was a real mix up of Tin Machine songs, but regrettably did not include the above mentioned tune. It did contain this gem however.

19TH NERVOUS BREAKDOWN - THE ROLLING STONES

As Leigh Guppy once said to me "You can't beat a bit of 19th Nervous".

CHOCOLATE CITY - MAVIS STAPLES

Another song drafted in as a replacement for one of the THREE INXS tracks???

I had wanted to use Chocolate City by Parliament as it appeared on the same album as Wants To Get Funked Up, but the Parliament tune didn't really fit the flow. I'm happier with this. I listened to Mavis Staples a fair bit after her hook up with Prince, but may have not realised then

that the two tracks were about 'the ghetto', innocently thinking more along the lines of a Willy Wonka type paradise.

PAPA WAS A ROLLING STONE - THE TEMPTATIONS

Thankfully, at some stage in the last twenty eight years I decided to replace

Gold Mother by James with this number. What on earth was I thinking of?

I still have it written on the cassette cover, but having listened to the tape again TODAY, I can confirm that this features in it's place.

If anybody reading this has also been present at a Karaoke evening with myself, then they will know that I always request this as 'my song'.

Of course, I always forget about the extra long intro, so I'm left standing around with a big grin on my face.

I take great pleasure at attempting even the highest notes - quite badly.

PAINTBOX - PINK FLOYD

As covered above, I don't remember the album being called Relics though?

Can you help please, HEAVY?

MEMORY OF A FREE FESTIVAL - DAVID BOWIE

What a great way to end your first record? I'm purposely disregarding his earlier effort. I think Bowie went on to record some of the most interesting music ever. So, I'm rounding things off in the same way with this edited section and conveniently forgetting WIMBLEDON '91 90 in the same way.
