BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS
This tune always evokes memories of driving to Southampton for a night out, so was used here to kick-start my latest journey tape. Providing just about the right amount of urgency required for getting from A to B.
Not really knowing too many details, other than the title. I found it very difficult to track this down, and even resorted to basic searches on YouTube.
The voice samples throughout are the infamous Jock Stewart from Prisoner Cell Block H, and the Music Video contains the scenes to match.
Unfortunately, this sucked me into a YouTube vortex, and led me to watching several episodes of the above mentioned Australian series.
I was still deep in the grip of this, when I found myself staying at a fairly decent hotel in Croatia.
It really puts a smile on my face to think that whoever stays in the room from now on, will be confronted with nothing but Prisoner Cell Block H suggestions, when they try and watch anything on YouTube via the connected t.v.🤣
(Click the link above to join in the fun).
I was quite surprised by this when I saw the music video for the very first time.
Bowie, in a band?
I instantly loved it, and was very impressed by the new direction that was firmly focused on high quality Rock.
This was included at the time from a recording from the television, so not the best quality. Not long after, I picked up a bootleg of this album, or so I thought.
In fact, it contained an albums worth of music, but didn't feature this song at all!
FIGHT THE POWER - PUBLIC ENEMY
I was also quite surprised by this when I saw the music video for the very first time.
I instantly loved this as well, and was extremely impressed by the frenetic use of samples that made up the core of the driving rhythm. Needless to say, that the various band members and entourage assaulted the senses in the same way.
This featured on one of the numerous Mute promos that found its way into my car via Dan Ashton. Many thanks mate, if you ever get to read this, I am still very keen to listen to anything attached to Barry Adamson.
VOODOO RAY - A GUY CALLED GERALD
I've adjusted the running order slightly here to give more of a positive progression through the various styles of music.
Previously, I had the track below following on from Public Enemy! Obviously a catastrophic error at the time, I can only assume my passengers were too polite to point out the lunacy of it all.
GIFT OF THE GODS - DOOF
I've only recently discovered the true title of this, and name of the artist. I had simply labelled it as 'Super Rog' on the cassette,
because I secretly caught Mr. Meech Snr. 'trancing out' to this when he thought nobody was watching!
I'm not sure if he genuinely appreciated it, or was just relaxing in an unfamiliar way (the eyes were closed and the head was moving in time!), I suppose we'll never know...
SHARKS TO BLOOD - COMMON LANGUAGE
I think this may have come courtesy of Mr Ashton as well, but I'm not entirely sure.
Love the atmospheric guitar!
I was hooked on anything by Curve after Coast Is Clear...
I still have a ticket for them at Southampton University in '93, but sadly do not remember anything about it at all.
Hopefully, if anyone manages to read this (Af), could you please fill in the gaps for me? I'm sure it was a good night...
I seem to only remember attending The Orb, Sonic Youth and Prince during the 90's, but I have a box full of tickets that would suggest otherwise...
A very good way to close out the first half of the journey tape.
LITTLE RED ROOSTER - THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN
I have a tremendous amount of time for The Rolling Stones version of this, but neither version featured on my original journey tape??
This has been drafted in to replace Nine Million Rainy Days, that inexplicably featured on EVEN BETTER, my Glastonbury '92 tape as well???
I honestly can't remember whether it was for a specific reason, or if I liked it that much, that I needed to include it again so quickly. I suspect that, in a time before computing and accurate record keeping, that it may have slipped through as an oversight.
COULD YOU BE LOVED? - BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS
I've never been a fan of out and out 'vocal' Reggae, but I absolutely love this!
BEEN CAUGHT STEALING - JANES ADDICTION
Right, I'm going to show off my 90's credentials here.......
This sticks in the memory for featuring in the CAPE FEAR ('91) remake that I saw at the cinema, and for some strange reason, I still have the ticket for this also??
This song was also very popular amongst my festival going and Indie night attending friends.
Incredible!
This reminded me in a big way of the Badelamenti Soundtrack work at the time, so had to lead into the next track...
I was very pleased with myself at the time for putting these two together, and it doesn't sound too bad, all these years later.
UP IN FLAMES (LIVE) - JUILEE CRUISE
I think I may have used every musical number from David Lynch's Industrial Symphony No.1, I'd recorded it from television, and was desperate to include stuff on my compilations to show off the diversity of my musical tastes.
Obviously, my memory of the early 90's is a little fuzzy, but I'm astonished at how we managed to watch one off t.v. shows like this, without the ability of 'Catch Up' or 'On Demand'?
You can probably see a pattern here...
It wouldn't be the same without paying respect to the King's Of Disco.
GUNGADIN (FEATURING SHAUN RYDER) - INTASTELLA
I don't remember how I first started listening to Intastella, but I do remember announcing to my good friend Lendizium upon his return from overseas, that I had developed an appreciation of 'Space Pop'.
I realise now that I may have been misinformed as to the labelling of Intastella, but I think I got the basic drift.
Get ready then for MEECHADELICA which will feature many similar themes from that period.
This record then, signifies the coming together of two avenues of music that were vitally important to me at the time, and I still have several t-shirts to prove it!
Still very fresh in my mind from the live performances of 1990's Nude Tour. This stood out because of the thunderous pounding of the drums which seemed to go through you like a sonic blast (I should have really got my internal organs checked out after that), as I did attend 1 or 2 other nights as well.
I didn't remember just how many false endings this had.
FINGERPRINT FILE - THE ROLLING STONES
Is Mick singing with a West Indian accent?
Utilising the live version is a bit of an inconsistency...
I keep banging on to people about how much of a Rolling Stones fan I am, well my listening habits were extremely narrow when it came to their recorded output. I never really managed to get past their music from the 60's.
This song featured on the It's Only Rock 'N' Roll album, which I never owned, or had even heard at the time I originally put this together.
I did however, pick up a sub standard bootleg which contained this live version.
Of course, I've since listened to the album track!
It's great, but totally different to my ears. Therefore, recreating this compilation with the live version was essential.
