THE DANCE ELECTRIC - ANDRÉ CYMONE
A fantastic piece of music, and the perfect song to open with. Probably towards the very top of any list of Prince songs that have been released by other artists.
I'm reluctant to call this a cover version, although, technically it is.
Almost irrelevant now that a full on Prince version has been released on the Purple Rain deluxe format.
I've added this because it's relatively new to me, and still somewhat of a novelty. A Prince b-side of this calibre covered by anybody in the league of George Clinton is well worth including.
Very memorable from the Purple Rain motion picture, and unique for the fact that it was performed by an act other than The Revolution, The Time, or Apollonia 6.
I had never really appreciated this song, until I heard the reasonably tidy digital version of the Prince demo many years later.
I would have included that, but it's not quite as crisp sounding as I'd like.
However, this released recording does feature backing vocals by Mavis Staples & George Clinton. So, comes with quite a high pedigree!
Continuing at the same level of pedigree on this track with a guest appearance by none other than Miles Davis!
DON'T LET HIM FOOL YA - PRINCE
The only outright Prince track in the entire mix only received an official release late last year. Even stranger still, it didn't even feature amongst my vast collection of Prince music, so was entirely fresh to my ears!
I mentioned at the time of release that it sounded very much like something written for one of the side projects, possibly Vanity?
At the very top of my list of Prince songs that have been released by other artists!
I once owned the 12" promo of this, but was offered quite a good price for it at the time and sold it. I really can't bring myself to check the current value.🤨
In 2013, I was lucky enough to attend a gig by Sheila E, and even luckier when she walked though the crowd during this song and gave me a high five!
(gigs and human contact - happier days).
ALL DAY, ALL NIGHT - JILL JONES
The Prince & The Revolution bootleg version is probably what most fans would identify with, but this release on Paisley Park was the first time that I came across the song.
I don't think I actually owned this album, I'm sure that I only ever had a taped recording from one of my fellow enthusiasts.
A MILLION MILES (I LOVE YOU) - APOLLONIA 6
I only had this on tape as well, but an officially released cassette album!
God knows where I bought that from?.
I DON'T WANNA LEAVE YOU - THE TIME
The first three Time albums were relatively easy to get hold of during this period, and did have a place amongst my ever growing collection of Prince records.
This is the close out track on the second album, and I think is the most Prince sounding song to be attributed to The Time.
I'm pretty sure this album was the very first CD that I bought by anybody other than Prince.
*My first actual CD was the initial release of 1999 (the one with the missing track).
Another song that exists as a fairly low quality demo by Prince & The Revolution, this version is from the Paisley Park release by The Family. A complete album of music written for the band that evolved from The Time, this release also featured the original Nothing Compares 2 U, the song made famous by the Irish lady with the short hair.
Another Paisley Park release, and probably the final record before Sheila joined Prince's touring band full-time.
SOUL PSYCHODELICIDE - GEORGE CLINTON
I have three demo versions of this, of which this is [No.2].
HA! - I'm currently listening to a 59 minute live studio version!
