This was always going in, and always at the start!
For any fans of Superfly and the incredible soundtrack,
this is for you.......and Me of course!
This was always going in, and should normally be at the start, if it wasn't for my love of Superfly.
If you've seen this video, you'll know why it sticks in the memory - even mine?
I think someone must have bought it for me, because I still have the 10" with the 3 action figures on the front.
Released in 1999, that was my 'Year Zero', and I spent most of it indoors!
I would fill my days listening to music, watching films, and reading, much like the whole world at present. But I did also have to re-learn how to walk.
MTV was essential viewing for me, when I could fit it in to my busy schedule.🤣
This was long before the music video was discarded in favour of reality garbage.
Another great video to help promote something that really needs no help at all.
Ha!
Ill communicating....
I think this album may have been the reason I started taking notice, and Sabotage did crossover into the Indie side of things that I may have been exposed to around this time?
I still remember buying this album, and it featuring quite prominently in my record collection. This was probably due to it having a textured sleeve, making it more likely to be selected in low light settings.
Still communicating.....
From their final album, and probably my least listened to for some reason?
I'll be addressing that right away...
It would have been too easy to overload this with pure Funk Instrumentals, but I think I've got it just about right.
This is obviously from The Mix Up, a complete album of just that format.
This album (Check Your Head) was added to the collection on the strength of Ill Communication, and I'm glad to say that it fully lived up to my expectations.
This album was added to the collection on the strength
of the Beastie Boys in general,
and I've still not had chance to appreciate it as much as I should,
but I am working on it...
Although this is from the ground breaking second album, it could quite as easily have featured on the debut release.
This features as a direct result of MCA's fascination with Tibet.
This features as a direct result of my admiration for the masterpiece, Hello Nasty.
As above.
Q Tip adding his bit to this track is more than enough on its own!
But I'll always remember it featuring on a compilation that circulated many years ago that highlighted the 'new' Trip Hop sound - The Rebirth Of Cool Phive.🤣
I think I should mention the Apple TV documentary...
If you've purchased any Apple device recently, you need to go into your settings, and activate your subscription to Apple TV.
This will give you free access for 1 year, and then you can view the exclusive Beastie Boys documentary by Spike Jonze.
B-BOYS MAKIN' WITH THE FREAK FREAK
A solid track from a very solid album that manages to fuse Hip Hop with a more Alternative sound.
Not really sure why the sitar makes an appearance on this track, but I'm certainly glad that it did.
?
It would have been too easy to include this on one of my space themed projects, it was the very first tune I thought of though on both occasions.
MULTILATERAL NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT
I absolutely love this mix!
A real pleasure to put together, and everything fell into place very easily. I shall be listening to this again, and again...
I was very pleased to find out, after watching the Apple Music film, that the album they consider to be their finest, corresponds with my absolute favourite of theirs. Listening to Hello Nasty always takes me back to a very specific time and place, and that always puts a smile on my face!
I believe they performed at a festival I attended, but sadly that memory has been taken away? I may need some clarification....Af?
Fortunately, I do still remember seeing them at the Brixton Academy not too many years ago.
More fresh Beats from the new millennium, marrying quite well with the firm favourites from the previous century.
Not really a track, but I was quite keen to use this interlude at least once.
One more from the pure funk instrumental format.
I'm thinking this is a reference to Rick Rubin.
Who until recently, I thought was the same person as Steve Cropper?
I persisted with this thought, even though they were completely different people, and didn't even share the same name??
But in my bizarre reality - they were definitely the same person!
I've always thought it was quite cool for a clearly skilled musician in the league of Steve Cropper to turn his hand to high end Hip Hop production.
You can hear their hardcore roots in this track.
I'm thinking this is a reference to Jimi Hendrix. Who until recently, I thought was the same person as Donald 'Duck' Dunn.
Ridiculously not true at all, but I really did assume that Rick Rubin and Steve Cropper were the same person. I think the beard & hair combination confused me once upon a time, and I'd never bothered to prove or disprove my theory.
Not really a fan of their first album at all, but I suppose it did achieve what it was designed to do - appeal to a broader demographic
(of which I'm probably included).
However, this track needs to make an appearance, and fits in perfectly at the end.
