I'm guessing that not many people will be listening to this weeks show, or even reading these notes...
Far more important life changing events are sweeping the globe, I will understand if nobody has the inclination to dip into this specific sub genre of music that has polarizing levels of appreciation.
Electric Jazz/Funk Fusion from the 1970's is the destination for this weeks journey, with focus on one specific practitioner of the art form.
Any true Jazz aficionado that may stumble across this now, or in a hundred years would probably throw their hands up in disgust at my attempt of distilling the magic down to just 90 minutes.
*for example, I've needed to edit this first track down from over 28 minutes, to just under 12.
Long before the catastrophic health crisis began to sweep across the planet, I had planned to produce a dedicated show to celebrate this era of the Miles Davis output. I'd looked ahead to coincide issuing in the same week as the 50th anniversary release of Bitches Brew 30/03/70). I'd even hoped to attend a celebration at The Jazz Cafe in Camden, but sadly that has been cancelled now due to the 'lockdown'.
If you have the time, as I suspect you will, after you've accepted the new trajectory that we are now headed, then you must listen to On The Corner in its entirety? You will be most pleased by my recommendation...
This is the first of only two tracks on here that actually appear on 'a version' of Bitches Brew "a pivotal album that altered the trajectory of jazz, messed with the boundaries of funk, and pushed psychedelic rock to new heights of exploration".
In fact, rather confusingly this is not featured on the original album at all, but does appear on The Complete Sessions???
That was my first exposure to this track, so I've always associated it with Bitches Brew, rather than the Big Fun album.
I should have probably focused on that album to pay respect, but its not as pleasing to insert my name into the title, and we're not marking the 50th anniversary yet.
Maybe get ready for Meech's Big Fun in four years, if we still have an Internet?
*Regular listeners will not be surprised by my continued fascination with anything that features a sitar.
An earlier, shorter, more traditional track. Used here to fill the early, shorter, more traditional quota.
Tying in both with the aquatic themed track titles and sounding very similar in sound and structure.
Now we're cooking.
This does feature on the original 1970 release, also The Legacy Edition, and The Complete Sessions. I'm sure it was all set to appear on whatever 50th Anniversary edition that was all set for release before the whole world turned to shit.
Still cooking.
I really should have called this Meech's Big Fun.
Nice.
