PLANET D (PORTISHEAD REMIX) - SABRES OF PARADISE
I’m feeling the dub on this opener with the echo-laden synth that crops up from time to time. I feel it would soundtrack a low level drug deal in a sub-par Guy Richie rip off.
From a Portishead remix album I didn’t know existed - might be a bootleg? Phat bass. Geezers from the same movie driving around manacling through Acton at 2am.
THE TIME HAS COME (PORTISHEAD PLAYS U.N.K.L.E. REMIX) - U.N.K.L.E.
I can take the odd U.N.K.L.E track in isolation but prolonged exposure usually bores me half to death and back. There is a Scooby Doo spookiness about this number though and the scratching is fairly good. I might listen to this when I next carve a pumpkin.
GIVE OUT BUT DON'T GIVE UP (PORTISHEAD REMIX) - PRIMAL SCREAM
I recently worked out that I have seen Primal Scream more than any other act. No real reason for that - they might scrape my top 50 bands of all time but I mostly watched them because everybody else did. That said, when they are great, they’re great and I love this messy soulful remix.
KARMACOMA (PORTISHEAD EXPERIENCE) - MASSIVE ATTACK
This is good because you get Massive Attack, Tricky, and Portishead all under one mid-90s West Country shed roof. All very trip-hop (ahh fuck…I said it).
WUTCHA WANT? (PORTISHEAD REMIX) - NINE
Throaty.
NEFISA (PORTISHEAD REMIX) - EARTHLING
Much prefer the rapping in this track - reminds me of Deltron 3030.
THE FEDERATION (PORTISHEAD REMIX - RUSTY JAMES
This track is almost very good, a nice jazz feel - there is something about the sound of the vintage hooter in this that makes me want to kill.
1st TRANSMISSION (EARTHEAD) - EARTHLING
This track rhymes Nat King Cole with Goldfish bowl.
NOWHERE TO RUN (PORTISHEAD REMIX) - GRAVEDIGGAZ
Everytime I hear Gravediggaz I like what I hear.
MUDSKIPPER (PORTISHEAD SO-SO REMIX) - JUNKWAFFEL
The hazy synth is to die for darling - exquisite…whilst I’m listening to this one of my neighbours is sawing timber with a hand saw. It fits in very well with the music…although you will have to take my word for it.
IN YOUR ROOM (THE JEEP ROCK MIX) - DEPECHE MODE
This one blew me away back in the mid-90s - have listened to it many, many times.
MOONLIGHT MEDICINE (PORTISHEAD RIDE ON THE WIRE MIX) - RIDE
This, on the other hand, I have only discovered since putting this little mix 'tape' together - quite how it passed me by is a slight mystery but we are together now.
WILD WOOD (SHEARED WOOD REMIX) - PAUL WELLER
The most famous Portishead mix? Great song given a proper good treatment. Played a lot back in the heady days of the mid-90s.
WALKING IN MY SHOES (GRUNGY GONADS MIX) - DEPECHE MODE)
Slightly less epic than the last DM number but still skill.
FALL OF AGADE (PORTISHEAD REMIX) - WHORES OF BABYLON
Feel like I’m listening to Nitzer Ebb Muteheads.
GRACE UNHEARING (PORTISHELL REMIX - MY DYING BRIDE
Given that there are so many sub-genres in metal I don’t know where you would place this? I’m going to call it West Country Sludge doomkore with added percussion.
EASY (MR BARROW & ME YATES SURFIN' FOR KATE REMIX) - SOMETHING FOR KATE
Surely this is Bush?
