SWEETBACK'S THEME - EARTH, WIND & FIRE
I'd always thought that I saw Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song on Alex Cox's MovieDrome, but it turns out that it didn't actually feature on that run at all?
I did however, have a copy on V.H.S that I'd recorded from television at some stage.
It seemed that the theme was used nearly every five minutes or so throughout the course of the film. Certainly, whenever the protagonist was running, or being chased, which probably was every five minutes - at least.
100 MILES AND RUNNIN' - N.W.A.
I'm always reminded of the previous track whenever I listen to this, and vice-versa, so they had to go together here. These two tracks were definitely the very first entries to this project, so had to go at the beginning to provide the required urgency.
An equally pressing track from an entirely different genre, but could quite easily appear on a film soundtrack of this nature.
I suspect the reason this has ended up in my library is probably due to the fact that I created the 'Soft Edit' Apple Music playlist for Heavy PC's very first show which contained The Sunwatchers. The two acts sound very similar and could quite easily compliment each other on future shows?
My imagination is truly a strange and wonderful place, and in this strange wonderful place, this track reminds me of The Theme From Shaft!
Glad to hear that these guys are really putting their effects pedals through their paces.
BORN TO LIVE WITH HEARTACHE - MARY LOVE
Those effects pedals are still working overtime...
This track is required for the transition from Alternative Rock to traditional Funk/Soul.
GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT - THE O'JAYS
I don't think you can get closer to traditional Funk/Soul than the O'Jays?
Roy Ayers - The Legend, treating us to his amazing skills on the vibraphone.
Fitting in with the Funk/Soul direction and adding to the Bad Cop tone.
JUMP INTO THE FIRE - HARRY NILSSON
Now we're talking cocaine induced paranoia, seeing narcs in the sky and around every corner (thanks Mr. Scorsese).
I was saving this for my 80's show, but was desperate to include it here. Used in what I consider, the best film to feature the Hannibal Lector character. I did see this on MovieDrome, of that I am 100% positive.
This wouldn't work anywhere else, so it sits at the beginning of the second half. Not sure how it relates to the concept, I just like it though.
This fits really well with the notion of a theoretical film soundtrack about Bad Cops.
I CAN GET YOU OVER - W.A.G.B. BAND
I'd identified this for use on a possible Disco project in the future, but thought it would follow on from the previous track quite well.
LADY DAY AND JOHN COLTRANE - GIL SCOTT-HERON
I'm surprised that this is the first and only appearance from Mr Scott-Heron so far. I'll have to address that going forward...
I CAN DIG IT BABY - LITTLE BEAVER
I think this guy likes to Party!
(FALLIN' LIKE) DOMINOES - DONALD BYRD
This song sounds pretty close to perfection for me.
PILS INFINIS No.2 - FREDERIC GALLIANO
Towards the end of the 90's, I remember picking up a Promo as an introduction to the FCommunications releases. This particular track found its way on to an early mix. Thankfully, it manages to transfer....just about, to the Bad Cops theme?
I THINK OF SATURDAY - MOODYMANN
Certainly enough time to squeeze in a bit of Kenny Dixon Jnr.
I extended this out a bit, and added a few loops to go over the build up of the following track, creating a really good blend of the two.
I'm a huge fan of the Billy Paul version, and David Holmes incorporated it in that famous Essential Mix. Very pleased to come across this version, and I think it wraps up the mix really well.
