Never heard of Max Cooper before if I’m honest. Just happened to see this album in a ‘Best of 2019’ list somewhere and thought I’d investigate as I liked what I was reading. Turns out it’s alright and well worth a listen. This track is a good opener - Start quiet…and build.
DEAD CITIES - FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON
I appreciate FSOL more now than when I did back in the 90's, and I did appreciate them quite a lot then. There is a good FSOL Peel session out there somewhere where they open with this tune after bamboozling Peel at the start - it’s much better than the album version here…this is still pretty fine though.
I AM YOR NEW KING (FEAT. KING DUDE) - ANCIENT METHODS
This has a sort of techno dystopia about it that I like - a kind of new dawn tech-religious tribal God chant.
I like Burial - if I was a film director I would use much of his stuff. This even has a poppy little lyric running through it.
Iggy Pop played this a few weeks ago on his radio show and I instantly like it - vicious mutha.
FALLEN (BASEMENTMIX) - ONTHEGROUND
I found it really hard to find a track to follow ‘Officer’ because it ends so abruptly. But I really wanted ‘Officer’ in there. Trawled through loads of techno that I have in my library until I found this - kind of works but not perfect. The track could bring down tower blocks though.
One that I investigated following recommendation from an algorithm. This is very reminiscent of the sort of thing that would have blown my socks off in the early 90s.
FEAR SATAN (U-ZIQ REMIX) - MOGWAI
The best track on the classic EP in my opinion, and signals a shift in musical focus as the show hits half time.
There may be some confusion here. This track is by Viet Cong, even though some outlets will refer to the band as Preoccupations. This album came out as Viet Cong, but the Internet became outraged that they had the audacity to use the epithet of a group responsible for many murders. Shame really as Viet Cong sounds way cooler than Preoccupations. Scuppers my plans to form a band called Alexander The Great’s Balmy Army.
This band released an album with a real cadaver on the cover. The album is a tough listen. Interestingly, the band Spectres did an unofficial track for the Bond movie Spectre - it tanked. However, both that and the Radiohead track that Broccoli binned are both better than the tedious and desperate Sam Smith song that eventually opened the movie.
PRAY FOR THE PAIN YOU SERVE - GARY NUMAN
Still a really interesting artist in my opinion. I like that Nine Inch Nails cite Numan as a major influence and yet here he sounds really like NIN. On which note…
HAPPINESS IN SLAVERY (REMIX) - NINE INCH NAILS
More NIN on planetmeech radio, I’m, like, not even sorry.
CLAUSTROPHOBIC STING - THE PRODIGY
From the best Prodge album, this is one of my favourite tracks from it - good squelches and beep beep noises.
SLAVE TILL U DIE NO MATTER WHAT U BUY (L'ANSE AUX MEADOWS MIX) - THE ORB
Still going strong after all these years, and this track both myself and planetmeech agree is very of the moment. As a punk fan it was pleasing to learn that the spoken word is Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys fame
LIFE ON MARS? - TRENT REZNOR & ATTICUS ROSS
Sorry, more Reznor…I think it’s allowed as it’s not technically the same titled act? Anyway, this piece soundtracks the big twist in 2019’s best TV show…Watchmen! I promise there will be no Trent Reznor in my next show.
