THE LOVE OF MUSIC
AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST
BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS
WHITE BLINDNESS - THE HARE AND THE HOOFE
This is from one of my favourite albums of 2019 – this track opens the album so I thought I would open this show with it. I am glad that progressive rock is alive and well in 2019 although I would imagine the vocal style isn’t for everyone in the same way a Jethro Tull 15 minute flute solo isn’t for everybody.
MOTHER OF THE FUTURE - ELECTRO KEYBOARD ORCHESTRA
When people say they don’t like jazz I don’t think they appreciate the full depth of the genre. This is fundamentally jazz and is the theme tune to ‘heavy pc – Military Vet’ an obscure, one season wonder drama from the 70s about an animal vet who works with a South American insurgent group fighting against the incumbent military junta.
CAMILLE 3000 - COSMIC ANALOGUE ENSEMBLE
More Jazzy weirdness but short and sweet – this is also the theme tune to ‘heavy pc – Riviera Mule’ an obscure, one season wonder drama from the 70s about a debonair narcotics dealer based in Marbella but with a network of UK based drug gangs supplying weapons grade Moroccan hashish to the metropolitan elite.
TRUE LOVE WILL FIND YOU IN THE END - HEADLESS HEROES
This is a most acceptable cover version of the Daniel Johnston classic. It almost veers into John Lewis advert territory and I will accept that as valid, constructive criticism. However, I think it is good and kind of fits in with the overall vibe of the show – slightly ethereal with moments of madness. Actually, the more I think about this selection of songs, the more I think it should be listened to while smoking one of Danny’s special Camberwell Carrots.
Yeah? I include this because I think I taped the album ‘Luxury of Life’ from my friend and collaborator planetmeech back in ’85. Therefore, I include it for pure nostalgia and the fact that I think I like it.
Not the first track to feature non-English vocals in this set. Goat groove – this track makes me feel like a shaman who supplies potions to visitors from far off lands looking to find themselves. Or…this is the soundtrack to a group of vampires hunting down their quarry in a warehouse complex in East London.
I think there are a few 40-50 somethings who are a bit sniffy about contemporary hip-hop. I like this jolly fellow and his rap songs.
SHUUKYOU-RELIGION - SHEENA RINGO
I don’t remember where I first heard Ms Ringu, but I really like this weird piece of J-Pop. Fits in well with the aesthetic I thought and I like the way the piano at the end of Mr The Creators song segues seamlessly in the piano of this track.
This is not a tie-fighter! The thing with sound effects at the start of the track means that you can use it to blend tracks without mucking about with all that pesky mixing of tracks – like the old disc jockeys would do. Plus, this is a crazy little number and in complete contrast to…
SING SOMETHING SIMPLE - CLIFF ADAMS SINGERS
…these lovely boys and their easy-listening gentleness. Come down…
…and come back up again. Really good drumming and some clearly defiant Japanese shouting.
ASTONISHING COMET - EARTH TONGUE
Good riffing – I like this because it seems like the lyrics were written before the music and they have simply made the words fit. Did I mention good riffing?
BLUE FRANK-PINK ROOM - XIU XIU
Xiu Xiu have recorded a covers album of Twin Peaks tunes. This is from it and I have always enjoyed the original Pink Room tune – this gives it a slightly different dimension.
Again, I might be veering close to John Lewis advert territory but I like this version of the Guardians of the Galaxy song. Adds to the slightly other-worldly feel.
SKETCH FOR WINTER - THE DURUTTI COLUMN
Another short burst of calm from The Column – feels cosy and comforting.
This is far from cosy – it has taken me a while to understand this band but I think I’m there now. I saw this track being performed on the Mercury Music Prize and it was quite a memorable performance – well worth checking out.
I chuffing well love Lizzo – would easily have been the most poppy track in the show but…Five Star…I went there!
I don’t know why I picked this – just sounds pretty decent and leads in quite well with the next tune.
KILLER SHANGRI-LAH - PSYCHOTIC BEATS
I like the macabre subject matter, the slightly dreamy feel, and the strings and piano are great. Also, I think it has a Twin Peaks vibe.
ALONE TONIGHT - ANDREA LITKEI & ERVIN LITKEI
I was quite determined to add some stuff to this show that goes against my normal sort of offerings. There is a vintage ghost story atmosphere to this number which I can see being played in the ballroom at the Overlook Hotel
SONG TO THE SIREN - THIS MORTAL COIL
Some calm before the final storm – and more Twin Peaks-style atmosphere. Surprised to learn that the tune actually makes an appearance in Lost Highway…I don’t remember it.
Recently there was a BBC series on called The Capture which features a scene in a warehouse party – this tune was playing and I was determined to track it down. Took a while but I found it. This would get me flailing wildly if I went out clubbing…which I won’t…so I flail wildly in the kitchen instead.
BLOWIN' MY MIND - OCEANS OF THE MOON
Another track from my favourite label, Castle Face Records. Psyche madness to finish off and now it’s time for bed.
