VISION RECEIVER - WALTER RAUXEL
I may have mentioned this previously but the good thing about digital and algorithms is the recommendations they throw up. I think the album I got this from was one of those recommendations. Good for an opening tune – sounds like the theme to a freaky 70s quiz show
I think this is effectively Prog? I’m not usually one to dig the flute but I can handle it in this tune.
I chose this track from the French Prog outfit because it is a little groovier in my opinion. Steve ‘interesting’ Davis is a fan as well.
FLASH, BAM, POW - THE ELECTRIC FLAG
A little 60s psyche groover here – basically chosen for the electronic messy madness at the start
KITES - SIMON DUPREE AND THE BIG SOUND
I kind of like the guy’s voice – not the sort of stuff I would have listened to in my youth but now I think it sounds amazing.
I imagine D-lillion’s parents enjoying this number.
HYACINTH THREADS - ORANGE BICYCLE
I like the harmonies even though the non-rhyme in the verse slightly irritates me
I HAD TOO MUCH TO DREAM LAST NIGHT - THE ELECTRIC PRUNES
A classic of the genre – I thought it would be a good idea to have a Californian vibey section in this mix, hence the next few tunes.
I think this song is clearly about being ripped to the tits on drink and drugs – although apparently the band deny this.
WHITE RABBIT - JEFFERSON AIRPLANE
If you look at footage of this band from the 60s I think they are exactly what you want a band to look like. This is one of the 17 best tunes of the decade in my opinion
Apparently Jim Morrison was hugely influenced by this band. It was a toss-up between this and The Doors’ Crystal Ship. We’ve had a bit of Doors over the last few weeks so this one won.
JUST DROPPED IN - TO SEE WHAT CONDITION MY CONDITION WAS IN - KENNY ROGERS
I like this tune because of The Dude!
Another classic of the genre – just seemed pretty perfect for this type of set.
Ahh, Country Boy. Bit of an obscure gem this. I picked this as the closer to Side 1 because I love the hectic guitar work towards the end.
I wanted Interstellar Overdrive but it is a bit too long for these purposes really. This is a hazy weed tune and one of my favourites from the Floyd canon.
There are many people out there who do not know the songs from a certain Beatles period. Mrs HEAVY PC, for example, had never really listened to the Magical Mystery Tour or Yellow Submarine albums. I think it is some of their best work. I could have used a number of tracks from this period but opted for this little beauty.
VISIONARY MOUNTAIN - MANFRED MANN'S EARTH BAND
My dad had a mate in the 70s and early 80s who would come round to the house in the evening and the two of them would listen to music all night. It tended to be a bit weirder than Slade or David Cassidy. My dad’s mate once put together a mix tape for my mum and dad which I eventually nicked and still have. It had, amongst other things like Throbbing Gristle and Robert Fripp, this little proggy puppy and I have enjoyed it ever since.
DOPOUT BOOGIE - CAPTAIN BEEFHEART AND HIS MAGIC BAND
I can’t say I enjoy all of The Captain’s stuff, this is strange but perfect, really well composed and produced I think.
Bit of early electronica. Apart from the production quality I think this sounds really contemporary.
THERE IS NO OTHER PLACE - INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER
I wanted something in the Velvet Underground style but not The Velvet Underground. I think this nails it.
Just someone I’ve stumbled across over the years. Good geetar.
Don’t put this in the ‘soft edit’ cos you will not find it. Someone, somewhere has got to reissue this. It feels like metal at times.
LO STRANGOLATORE DI BOSTON - FRANCO BRACARDI & GIORGIO BRACARDI
BONGO BOOGIE!
ADD MAR URAM AZ ESOT! - KATI KOVACS
I’ve picked tracks from the compilation this appears from before but I make no apologies. I may well use every track over the years as it is just superb.
More groovy grooviness to add to the vibe.
IN A BROKEN DREAM - PYTHON LEE JACKSON
Not a massive fan of Rod – but there is some decent enough early stuff. This being the best of the bunch.
