PRIMORDIAL SLUDGE - HELENA HAUFF

I needed an opening track that represented what I think occurred before the big bang – I imagine a void with sparks of…something. As the track grows, so does the spark of something that is eventually going to burst. The track itself is perfectly named for my intended purposes and comes from a very good album of 2018, I obviously like the acid squelches. The sample overlaid is a random philosophical argument I found on YouTube between a proponent of intelligent design and an atheist. I thought it would sound good over an opening that considers beginnings.

THE TERMINAL - MOON GANGS

Here I wanted a track that represented the big bang and the inflation of the Universe. I think the track literally sounds like its inflating. Another 2018 album that is a must listen to fans of sci-fi in my opinion. The sample midway is another random clip from YouTube discussing the nature of the big bang. I purposefully pursued an academic point of view as the whole set is designed to inform, educate, and entertain.

LIKE WOLVES IN THE FOLD - COLIN STETSON

Next I wanted a track to convey the spread of life in the universe but it was tricky to find one that really worked. This 2017 piece from saxophonist Colin Stetson nails it as far as I’m concerned – I get a sense of bacteria creeping along at the start and by the end large mammals and epic forests.  Another random piece of YouTube commentary – I chose this guy talking about life finding a way because he makes it all sound so irreverent.

TOTAL DISTORTED MAYHEM - THE JAPANESE POPSTARS

So, this track is supposed to represent a crowded Earth. Distorted mayhem demonstrates the technological age and the noise that surrounds it. The sample at the beginning is, of course, Agent Smith from The Matrix explaining his thoughts around the human virus theory.

CALLING OCCUPANTS OF INTER PLANETARY CRAFT - THE CARPENTERS

I always wanted minimal vocals on this set. However, this track was always going to be in. I really like Karen Carpenter’s voice and the cheesy, earnestness of a lot of their work.  This is like pop/prog but I think it works. In terms of concept, this represents the urge to learn if we are alone in the Universe and the urge of many humans to explore the cosmos.

MOON 2 - CHRIS CARTER

Yeah, this is a creepy, moody, and claustrophobic piece of electronica is preceded by the NASA commentary of an unidentified launch of the Discovery shuttle. This is supposed to represent the first human forays into the solar system – maybe moon hopping all the way to Pluto?

MORNING LIGHT - STUART DEMPSTER

This is the centrepiece of the set. This was apparently recorded in an infamous two million gallon, 186 foot diameter water tank about 70 miles northwest of Seattle. This music is epic in the truest sense. For the purposes of this set it represents leaving the solar system, as humans, for the first time. I imagined sitting on top one of the Voyager probes as it left the Solar System for the first time, hence the BBC news sample describing the probe entering interstellar space. The end of the piece represents the potential pitfalls of exploring outer space; the sample is Stephen Fry as ‘the book’ in the movie version of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

DARK SHIP - MOON GOOSE

This track is a beast! What I was going for here is that a large ark of a spaceship has left Earth in search of a new planet to inhabit as Earth is getting a tad inhabitable at this stage in time. The ship contains the DNA of pretty much everything that was available to sample. The journey will take generations, nobody really knows when or where it will end but the course is set roughly in the direction of Andromeda.

SURROGATE HEAD - THE PHYSICS HOUSE BAND

I needed something dramatic – the leaders of our human ark have discovered a wormhole in the fabric of space and time and are deciding whether they should enter it or not. A referendum is held and those wishing to ‘remain’ lose. Therefore the ark will exit the current course and enter the wormhole.

END OF EARTH - THE COMET IS COMING

It’s a really good job that the ark mission happened because Earth has blown itself out. Agent Smith was right – the human virus has killed the planet. Like all good viruses the humans have adapted and are spreading…what is at the end of the wormhole???

THREE LEGGED GIANT CENTEPEDE - KUAKOLAMPI

Our ark travellers have emerged from the wormhole into almost direct orbit around a ‘Super Earth’ some 1 million km in circumference. Although clearly gravity hasn’t got fully to work on the world as a 100,000km high mountain juts out between the equator and the southern pole – this gives the planet a strange rotation – almost like a propeller. A party land on a desert of black sand against a violet sky and the first living organisms they come across are these strange centipedes.

METROPOLIS LIGHT TRANSPORT - DATASETTE

Our travellers have found a city where they are met by a species similar to humans. They are bought to the centre of the city on a train-like system where they are met enthusiastically by the governing people. Eventually an agreement is reached whereby the travellers can land and colonise the massive mountain that juts out of the planet.

SPACE MOUNTAIN - FUCK BUTTONS

The survivors of Earth colonise the mountain and flourish for a few generations until such time as they start fighting and war-mongering. Especially when they realise that the native people who gave them the mountain have rather large traces of diamond and uranium in their bodies and decide to farm and harvest them. The human virus…

DESTRUCTORS FALL - ULTRA-VIOLENCE

Representing the last dying breaths of the human race as they literally have nothing left to consume.

END OF THE WORLD - SKEETER DAVIS

Humans have destroyed a second home, however this time there is no plan B…
